(一)基本資料

I have exchanged to University of Temple from Aug. 28 in 2017 to June. 22 in 2018. Temple University’s Main Campus is only 2.5 kilometers from the center of Philadelphia and is easily reached by subway or bus. This means Temple students have easy access to everything the city has to offer. It has also six campuses and sites across Pennsylvania, plus international campuses in Rome and Tokyo. During the time, I chose the whole language class, Intensive English Language Program (IELP) in the Temple University because I loved the structure of the program and the way it was taught. I liked the quality of the classes and the interactions with the teachers and other students. The academic format of the program was very appealing to me. (123字)

【照片說明:Reading Class】

I was in the Intensive English Language Program for 5 sessions and classes are offered in writing, reading, speaking and listening, all of which include instruction in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. I can also choose an enrichment class that can improve my English skills in specific areas and a short course focused on culture. Through this program that I have learned how to write a proper research paper in a formal academic way by paraphrasing, summarizing, using the quotation, stating my opinion, and doing in-text citations. I have also learned how to deliver presentations in English, how to write short stories, response papers and more. By doing all of this I have reinforced my English grammar while improving my speaking and listening skills. In class, all of my classmates are from all over the world which makes the learning process very interesting and fascinating. The most important thing is that I can meet up with other students who speak the different language. Thus, we can learn more about each other’s cultural differences and eating habits through chatting which makes me making lots of friends in language school. Besides, I also joined IELP for the many activities, events, and excursions that will help us meet people, experience the U.S. and improve our English. There are also have conversation partners, trips to nearby cities, Temple basketball and football games, picnics, and much more are available to us.(236字)

(三)生活環境

Temple University is not only beautiful for its view, but also for the multicultural people. My favorite experience at Temple has been the interaction among all the students from different parts of the world. Also, the great response I have gotten from the staff in the IELP program, who have been very friendly and have made me feel really welcome here, as the Temple slogan says. Moreover, the weather in America was contrary to Taiwan and it was cold and dry. In general, there will be snowing from November to February. But you did not have to worry about it, the indoor would have heater and considerably warm. Although it would be heavy snow, there were rare probability to cancel the class. I live with Chinese in a six-room house near the school. It’s new, clean, beautiful, close to campus, and environmental friendly. The rent was $410 per person per month for a room but does not include the utilities. It is also really convenient to get Asian food in Philly. There are many awesome Chinese restaurants around Temple main campus that you can choose, and the Chinatown is just 15 minutes by car from campus. In addition, the center city is only 10 minutes by car, it’s also convenient to go shopping. One of my favorite thing to do in Philadelphia is to wander around the city and take photographs of people and scenery. Every time I go on the streets of Philadelphia, I find new things, new corners and get to know more inspiring people. Overall, the location of Temple is pretty great and convenient.(266字)

(四)自我成長

During a year abroad, the most difficult part for me to live in abroad is living without the family. It seems like easy for just one year, but actually, we have to leave our comfort zone where we already have been with familiar. On the other hand, communication also was a difficult one because I didn’t handle the language well, but gradually I learned. That helped me to loosen up. Now, I don’t feel ashamed when I speak English; I feel comfortable. Moreover, the new situation we will meet is a different culture, environment, and foreign friend. Not like Asia people, black people and American are different to get along with. There are many different things will happen to us during the abroad studying. We need to figure out how to deal with everything independently. This process makes us stronger and bravely face other challenges in the future. By the way, there are many Chinese people and there even some Chinese market. However, meeting people that I had the opportunity to learn a lot about different cultures and personalities, and I also grew a lot as a person!(190字)

(五)大三出國建議

The students must think very carefully about the country that they want to spend a year. If there is a student who needs the credits, he or she should also think very carefully about whether the school you have chosen can you have the classes that you can take, so you can graduate on time. It is also recommended that don’t failed because of playing, because this may affect the relationship between schools or the opportunities for the students in the future. Do not be afraid to make mistakes because your native language is not English. Besides, if you have a chance to make any presentation at school, you need to grab the chance to share Taiwan's culture. It is also recommended that the students can prepare the good dinner with exchange students and or activities, Because, I think this is a great way to make friends. Experience as much as possible, and don't waste time on things that should not be wasted. However, I choose the whole language class during on this time, but I have also learn a lot from this program. IELP is a good program in Temple University. But you will also need to step out of your comfort zone in order to learn better. Don’t always stay with people who speak the same language as you. Besides, one of the great things about the IELP is that they don’t just teach you language, they also teach you about culture and develop you as a person. IELP life at Temple is fun. It's incredibly useful. Plus, you will have a huge international family and never feel alone! This is a unique experience, and if you have the opportunity to come, take advantage of it. Therefore, you don't need to worry about anything, just come and enjoy. Meanwhile, study hard, practice your speaking and listening by attending events, make international friends, explore diverse cultures and be impressed by Temple's globalization. You will learn a new language, become a part of a whole new culture, and get unique life experiences in an international setting.(349字)
