My favorite course of all the semester during the exchange year is "Introduction to World's Languages," lectured by professor Michael Ahland. From the name of the course, you probably knew contexts in this course, but it was so much more. After taking this course, I think it totally changed my point of view toward linguistics. Linguistics is not just a single field of study. As a matter of fact, it is a general gathering field which topics can be widely relative to other fields of study, including history, anthropology, sociology, and geography…etc. You might think I was just exaggerated, but I was really not. In this course, we not only learned about the academic terminology of linguistics, but also we heard whole kinds of different background knowledge of several languages. Sometimes, it did not feel like we were taking classes. It was more like listening to an excellent story teller with all the interesting tales and mystery. Languages we used or heard nowadays are not always the way they were. They were rapidly changeable. Also, they were affected by human interactions. When it came to human interactions, here came stories. As I mentioned above, historically, anthropological, sociological, and even biological methods could apply to linguistics. I especially love the way that the professor described how we saw the language and how to preserve them. There are about 7,000 languages living in this world. However, languages we human-being knew are only 4,000 of them, which means they are still lots of languages we do not understand. As time goes by, we might lose them forever. Every single one of the language is like a window. A window which got its own ways to interpret the universe; Losing a language is like people lose a way to understand the world. It was such fortunately for me to take this course, not only because this was relative to my major, but because it did fit me from the bottom of my heart. (328字)

(三)生活環境

The weather in Long Beach, California is warm and comfortable. In conclusion, this is a wonderful place for people to live. I am here for almost ten months and I could count the rainy day by my fingers. It is always sunny days in here, making you forget about the other weather. I lived in Park plaza which is a third floor rental apartment near the CSULB parking lot and dorms. The distance from our place to university is about ten minutes by car. Also, when you walk out of the door, there is a bus stop in front of the apartment. It is very convenient for students. I shared the place with other two roommates which allowed us to ease the rent. The environment around our place is quite suitable for students to live. For example, there are several food shops and restaurants near our place. If you want to cook by yourself, the supermarket is five minutes on foot. Also, cellphone center, department store, bank are all in the distance which you can arrive on foot. It is a good place to live in. The campus of the California State University, Long Beach is very huge. If you do not know the place you are heading or bring a GPS, you will definitely get lost. We even have to check our schedule in case of classrooms to different classes is too far to reach on time. All in all, here is a great place to stay, sometimes I even do not want to come back to Taiwan. (259字)

(四)自我成長

Reading the topic of this column, it seemed like students were supposed to encounter some kinds of “problem” or “shock.” Honestly speaking, I did not have such things during my year in abroad. Maybe it is because the way people handle things and social interacting habits were close to me so that I did not recognize the thing here as problems. For me, just simply life goes on. Interestingly, there is a term called “reverse cultural shock.” It meant that people lived in foreign place for a certain amount of time and when he or she came back to the original place, it seemed that the person could not get used to the life he or she live before. I did not have this problem, but I mentioned it just for bringing out that my shocks were mostly coming from my home university, typically the way how school handle things and the policy established during the year. People divided works based on their professional ability and the fact which helped things go efficiently. Take exchange students for instance, there were a team of people who typically assigned to handle the international students’ affairs. Compare to the home university which assigned works to only one staff and professors; it might be more resourceful and efficient for staffs, professors and students. A professional team could do several or more complete arrangements for students, and also shared the work from others. Most impressive I saw was the amounts of information, including academic, housing, finance…etc. Students could tell the difference of the information quality and used the helpful one searching on their own. Well, just for future advice which might be consider about. (If there are people reading the student reflection) (288字)

(五)大三出國建議

Generally speaking, just be a human-being and take good use of your brain, then you will be fine. To be more specific, since there is not so much useful information you can get from the university, so all you can do is to get information on your own. How to get information? Well, this is 2018, no need to be panic. There are always tons of information on the internet, for example, the California State University, Long Beach official website. You can get almost everything you need to know from it. Also, you can ask your seniors for information. However, you’d better search before you ask. Or you can visit CSULB student interaction group on Facebook. Once you want to solve the problem, there are always ways to find. The most important thing is that you need to figure out what you really want in your year in abroad. For fun? For learning stuffs? For experiencing different cultures? All of those things could be done separately or in the same time. I knew that this might sound like some kind of cliché, but most of the people might not be able to answer the question even if they are older. Understanding what your purpose is essential not just in junior abroad year, but in your life. Or at least you felt what you did could make you comfortable and peaceful besides illegal stuffs. In this case, you might have a clear direction to follow and make a plan. Finally, just live it and make yourself worth it. (257字)
