(一)基本資料

I went to Poland in my junior year. I studied in University of Warsaw from 1/10/2017 to 08/06/2018. In this university, we did not belong to any department. Basically, we could choose any courses that we were interested. I took some courses about Polish, Poland culture, contemporary changes of tourism space and so on.(52字)

I want to recommend Polish language courses. I was taught by two teachers. First, teacher Agnieszka Jastrzebska is very nice and patient, but she is not good at English. So you need to listen carefully and be very concentrate on the class. And Teacher Anna Domańska who is my Polish teacher during the second semester is very funny and her English ability is better. Both of them are very good teacher. Actually, it is really difficult for Chinese to learn Slavic language. I even think Polish must on “the most difficult language to learn” list. There are too many grammar and changes of verbs and nouns. At first semester, we will start at A1 level, teacher will teach very simple lessons (I mean “simple” is for Polish), for example, numbers, foods, or some sentences for daily life. At the last of the first semester, you can understand and have a simple conversation to answer what do you like to do or what is your favorite food. At second semester, teacher will focus on conversation. She will spend almost half time of class to have a conversation with you in order to improve Polish speaking and increase the opportunity to speak Polish. And you also can make friends more easily than other formal courses. I also recommend “Polish Culture” this course. It is really helpful to know more culture, history and traditional holiday in Poland. Although Polish is difficult to learn, it is really helpful when you are living in Poland. You can understand many words in supermarkets or restaurants. Because if you don’t understand Polish at all, you always need to take your phone to translate Polish all the time. When you try to speak Polish to Polish people, I think just like a foreigner speak Chinese to us in Taiwan. It is really kind and close that a foreigner is trying to integrate into their culture. (三)生活環境

University of Warsaw is divided to many departments. And they are not in the same area. Some departments are located in the Center of Warsaw separately. All of my courses are in the main campus. Main campus is not very big and its location is near to old town. Therefore, there are always some tourists take photos in front of main campus. I rent a room outside. It is in a flat that there are ten people live in this flat and share the bathrooms and kitchen. My room is not big, but it is very nice for one person to live. The only shortcoming is the room's insulation is too bad. Actually, this flat is not near to my campus. It takes around 25 minutes to arrive my campus by tram or bus. But this house provides great life style support with convenient public transportation. The life function of this area is very convenient, there are tram and bus station just in front of the house. More importantly, there are three different markets near our house. It is really helpful for international students’ life. The weather in Poland is very different from Taiwan’s weather. It snows very often in Poland in winter. Sometimes it may be around -11 degree Celsius. I thought I could not bear the temperature, but I am surprised that it was not difficult for me to adapt this new environment. Poland’s winter is very long because it still snows at the end of March. In short, the environment of Poland is cold and dry. If you dry your clothes today, they can be dried tomorrow. So does in winter. (275字)

Language. I think the biggest difficulty is language. In Poland, they don’t speak in English and they are not good at English besides younger people. In the perspective of a foreigner, they don’t like to smile and their face always look so angry or sad. When I just started my Poland life, I really have a deep impression of this. What impressed me most is that we want to create a bank account, we ask the bank service staff “Can you speak English?”. She just said “No!” and sit down immediately and then continued working. She just said no and didn’t help us, maybe tell us that one of her colleague can speak a little English. In Taiwan, if we see the foreigner ask us questions or need some help, we will try our best to speak English or find others to help them. But here, most of Polish still speak polish to you and won’t help you initiatively. They are not their fault, I think it is just a matter of cultural differences and history background. About studying abroad in University of Warsaw, I think the most annoying and complicated is applying for courses. In Tamkang University, you just need to enter some code numbers to the system. If there has space to add students, you can add into class immediately. In here, you need to write a “Learning agreement “ and send emails or go to find coordinators in person to get their signatures. When you get all the signatures, you need to send an email to International Student Office. They will send you the Order of Payment and ask you to pay the tuition. But it doesn’t mean that you are added into the courses. You need to notice the time of adding courses on the website because the opening dates of each department are different. Most importantly, we are not belonging to any department, so we don’t have authority to join the class on the system by ourselves. We have to send emails to each coordinators explain your condition, identity and ask them to add us into course on the system. During this period time of waiting emails, the class may be full. If the course is full, you need to repeat these steps again. It is a great effort to deal with applying for courses at the first semester. (399字)

(五)大三出國建議

At the beginning, I feel frustrated. I could not understand any Polish. I just can feel Polish indifferent attitude. Actually, you don’t need to afraid. I just feel nervous about starting live in the whole different environment. In the university, all the professors that I met so far are kind and friendly. You don’t need to be stressful for studies. In Poland, supermarket is your best friend for your life. Most of the prices are lower than Taiwan’s. And we usually cook each meals by ourselves, so I think you should learn some simple Taiwan’s dishes from your mother. It will be really helpful in Poland! Time flies. You should treasure every minute when you study abroad. You should arrange your weekends or free time to travel around Poland or other countries instead of staying at home. You will grow up in various aspects. There is another important thing is taking care of yourself when you are outside. The public security of Europe is not as good as Taiwan. Most people think that we are tourists, so thief will pay attention on us. And most importantly, you should try to learn some basic Polish in school. I know it is really difficult, but it is the first step to join into the whole new environment and culture. And you will feel accomplished when you can understand some Polish. This period of time is very precious. Although sometimes you would miss Taiwan, you can experience everything new and special in here. I wish you a wonderful junior year!(261字)
