It has been a remarkable experience to learning and be a student at Oxford Brookes University. The courses I took some relate to my major in Taiwan, but I also took some courses that we do not have in Taiwan. Such as Publishing Technology and Publishing History. Oxford Brookes University is famous for its art school and especially the Publishing department. I’ve met some amazing Professors in the Publishing Courses. In Publishing History course I dig into the feminist publishing world and receive tremendous help from Dr Jane Potter. She gave me helpful feedback and lots of inspirations. In Publishing Technology course I made leaflet, book cover and poster through Adobe Indesign and Photoshop by myself. I feels like I am a real publisher doing the works. Also, I would definitely recommend the course Food, Drink and Culture. The Course leader Dr Peter Lugosi is an amazing teacher. In this course, we got a chance to go on a field trip to Devon, experienced the culture of food and drink in English local farm and restaurants. It was a trip that really makes you learn about the environment and the secret of the British food industry. Although the assessment of this course is a bit tough, I would still recommend others to try. Apart from these amazing courses that I kind of handle well, there are still some courses that I do not enjoy. For example, Shakespeare is a course that I feel hard to do. As a student from Taiwan and not studying English Literature as the major, Shakespeare is not the kind of course that I could follow with my understanding and ability. It requires a lot of professional skills to analyze literature and wide understanding of English history. Which is hard for me to catch up as a foreign student. (304字)

(三)生活環境

Oxford is definitely a pleasant place to live in. It’s a city of scholar, Culture and literature. It is also very convenient to go to the city centre from Brookes University on foot or just simply take the bus. In the city centre, there are supermarkets, Westgate shopping centre and high street to looks for anything you need. I lived in one of the university dorm called “Cheney Student Village” with 5 British boys and girls. To be frankly, I would not recommend to living with “only” British people if you get to choose. The lifestyle is very different and sometimes they are very loud and not good at keeping public space clean. However, it is part of their culture, which I have difficulty to adapt with. Brookes University is a really new and well-functional university. The staff at International Students Advice team are friendly and always willing to help you with any problems. The school support with high-tech equipment. The weather in short, cold and dry. Most of the time is just classic British weather like everybody complains. We experience some really cold days during the winter. There will be snow even in April. However, if you ever get a chance to see the sun you would be really pleased by the warm sunshine and comfortable temperature. For food, there are Korean Supermarket and two Chinese supermarkets in Oxford. They are nice places for you to get some Asian food and Taiwanese food. My personal favourite is the Korean supermarket and Chinese supermarket in front of Oxford railway station. (260字)

(四)自我成長

【照片說明:The tea shop I worked for. 】

I have been through a lots of crazy things this year. I went to Scotland highland all by myself, and later when I went to Brussels, I got robbed. I loss all my money and my passport, but I handle it pretty well and eventually find my passport back. It was the moment that I realized I have the capacity of taking care of myself. Study in a foreign country is not a easy thing. You have to learn new languages, new lifestyle and the environment. I was not doing that well in the first semester, I got homesick from time to time, feels terrible of doing bad on essays. But it gets better. In the second semester I enjoy my courses and the course works. Also, I found a job in the English tea store Whittard, where I met a lot of amazing friends. It is my first job and my managers always say they are happy to have me there and they do not want me to leave. Finding myself useful in some place is an amazing feelings. There's only one thing that I really find it hard to tolerate is the drinking culture of British people. Drinking is not a problem, but drink too much and become annoying and irresponsible to the living environment is not good. That is the thing I am still trying to learn to adapt and accept. Besides that, I met a lots of lovely British people during the time I stayed. They are polite and delightful as you could imagine. (258字)

It is important to experience the local life and trying something new, but do not put on too much peer pressure to yourself. British people are extremely friendly, you certainly will not have any difficult to makes friend with them especially if you drink a lot. Be safe while you travel. I was followed by two men and got rob while travel in Brussels. Losing BRP is a very big deal while you are outside the UK. It cost you loads of money and trouble. Relax while you learn something new. It’s perfectly normal that you feel lost and confuse when you enter the new learning environment. The educating system between Taiwan and the UK is very different. If you feel frustrated or lose about your essay or any assessment just go talk to your professor. They are very friendly and aware of the difficulty for foreign students. They will give you some advice and help you out if possible. Last, I would definitely recommend try some part-time work in the UK if you could handle the course work. The speciality of working in UK is that you could meet a lot of people from different countries. Also learned some British culture while you working with British people. It is fun and helpful to learn English. I honestly don’t have other advice for study in the UK. Just live there, experience the atmosphere with your own style. Beware when you realize you start complain a lot about the weather and wearing dark clothes. That’s the sign you are becoming British. (263字)
