Course: Language, Culture and Society The reason why I recommend the course: This course is designed for Brookes students who are planning to study abroad in their junior year, just like 大三留學實務管理 for us in Lanyang. Hence, I really recommend students that are going to study in Brookes to take this course. Firstly, one-third of people in this course are international students, so it might be easier for us to get along with the classmates. Besides, the local students that sign up for this module are also planning to study in a foreign country in the future. Additionally, as an international student, it will be easier for us to blend in due to the rich overseas experiences that we could share. The module is separated into two parts, lecture and seminar. The lecture was taught by a native Spanish speaker who speaks fluently English but with a little accent. For me, it was quite difficult to understand at the beginning but soon the situation became better after I adapt the pace of the lecture. The seminar divided all the students into three different groups. International students were led by an American professor, so there was no accent problem. It is really a great chance for us to practice English speaking. Furthermore, express our opinions loud and clear in public. Both lecture and seminar lasted for an hour only, therefore, it is easier for students to concentrate. There was no exam for this module. For the whole semester, students need to hand in three essays, two individual works, and one group work. All the essays were related to the lecture and were carefully explained by both of the lecturer and the seminar leader. Moreover, the seminar leader was friendly and willing to answer any question. Therefore, I learned a lot while doing the homework of this module. In short, I would say selecting this course is worth it. (316字)

(三)生活環境

【照片說明:Campus in the snow】

Campus: Headington campus, sits one mile east of Oxford city center and is made up of three sites: Gipsy Lane, Headington Hill, and Marston Road. Accommodation: Clive Booth Student Village is one of the most popular halls. Just 500 meters from the Headington Campus, it provides ensuite, self-catered accommodation for nearly 800 students. The ensuite blocks are arranged into cluster flats of 5 or 6 bedrooms, sharing a kitchen and communal space. It costs £159.53 per week for a 38-week contract of an ensuite single study bedroom for next academic year. Transportation: It takes about 15 minutes to get to the city center by bus. The bus schedules are quite busy during the peak hours, so it is very convenient for students to travel from school to city center. Moreover, all the Brookes students could apply for a Brookes Key. It is free for University bus and only one pound for Oxford City bus. Climate and Clothing: The UK is often associated with rain, but this is because the weather can be unpredictable. The rain does not come all in one season. It can come at any time of year, and on any day. You might experience beautiful sunshine, blustering winds, and drizzling rain all in one afternoon. The weather in the UK is rarely extreme, but it can change quickly. Wear several layers so you can put them on or take them off as the weather changes, and always carry an umbrella (though most people here do not really carry umbrellas while raining). Food: Eat out is very expensive in Oxford, especially the Chinese restaurant. Hence, it would be better to cook for yourself due to the high cost of the restaurants in the UK.(280字)

(四)自我成長

The junior abroad program not merely helped me to be familiar with English culture but also challenged my English ability to the next level. I not only was given the opportunity to improve language ability also receiving the chance to immerse into the British culture. As a student major in English Language and Culture, this experience really helps a lot. I study literature because I believe there is power in stories. Literature is both intensely personal as well as a communal experience. Literature in all forms is everywhere in today’s society, and with this idea, it is clear just how important it is. Whether it is studied in the classroom, read for pleasure or purpose, literature is a central part of many lives. It offers not only a chance to enlighten a person, but it also gives the chance to broaden one’s horizons and perspectives. In my case, having the opportunity to study English literature in two different perspectives, has helped me to find similarities in two different cultures, and to also find that although literature varies in form and content, it is important and it is a central part of many lives. In addition, international learning and knowledge propel students towards acceptance and understanding of an array of different cultural and community perspectives. That is the joy of studying literature, there is always a new reality to discover.(231字)

(五)大三出國建議

One of the most significant causes of stress for international students when studying abroad might be language barriers. Communication gulf is the biggest obstacle that international students should overcome. During the lectures, we not only have to absorb new knowledge from the professors but also need to have a full understanding through a different language. One solution to the problem of poor academic English of international students is to practice more. With the improvement of the high-technology, the internet becomes one of the best resources for self-study. For example, there is a great mass of research journals on the internet. Moreover, it is not only learners’ best source for learning English but the easiest way to study at any place any time that you’re available. In addition to language problems, the changes of surroundings also increase our stress. The challenge that every international student has to face is the cultural shock you have to go through while you adjust to life in a new country. People may probably feel insecure when moving to an unfamiliar place. It is common to see students suffering from tension and anxiety at the beginning of the semester due to time difference or weather. But I think that is what we come abroad for, to accept “the change”. After all, studying in a foreign country could be an interesting experience but it is sometimes quite a burden for international students to juggle new life and school work simultaneously. It is our responsibility to try to make an understanding of these differences and enjoy our new lives here.(263字)
