(一)基本資料

The university I went to study is Temple University which is located in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. From 08/03/17 to 06/07/18, I took the courses of Hatha Yoga, Jazz dance, Psychology, Youth Cultures, Eating Cultures, Language in Society, Gender in America, Introduction to French, and The Art of Acting.(45字)

【照片說明:Language in Society】

My favorite course this year is Language in Society taught by professor Kenneth Schaefer. Linguistics was the first choice when I was registering courses in Temple because I have fell in love with it since I was a Freshman, and professor Schaefer did not disappoint me at all! There are 3 to 4 sections of Language in Society, and every section has a different topic and different contents of language, as the changes of language or the linguistics. Then I chose the latter one. This course is amazing that I learned differences in every language, the way to get used to the second language, many hypotheses of the acquisition of languages, and lots of things that I can’t tell one by one. Honestly, it is a pity to be absent in class. Moreover, the professor is conscientious and nice. He always types one to two A4 papers to reflect every student’s every assignment, I am so grateful about that, and that really made me improve. (165字)

(三)生活環境

【照片說明:Temple University-Main Campus】

Temple University's main campus is located just 1½ miles from the center of Philadelphia. Philadelphia is a huge melting pot of races and cultures. Therefore, Temple is not only beautiful for its view, but also for the multicultural people. There are almost every country’s students study in here. I think that is one of the reasons that Temple’s students are respectful and gentle to people that come from different cultures. The apartment I lived in is Skyline Apartment, which was originally called The Modules at Templetown. It’s new, clean, beautiful, close to campus, environmental friendly, and worthwhile. The year I came, the rent was still $750 per person per month for a two-bedroom-room, this year they raised to $800 though, it’s still worthwhile because other better apartments also raised their rent. The summer here is perfect, it’s warm and dry; but the winter is too cold for me, it’s almost freezing everyday between November and February. All in all, there is no much rain here, and the weather is better than Taipei. It’s really convenient to get Asian food in Philly. There are two awesome Chinese restaurants called China Star and China House around Temple main campus, and the Chinatown is just 15 minutes by car from Temple. Also, the food here is multicultural, I like Cuban cuisine the most which combined with beans, rice, and meats. In addition, the center city is only 10 minutes by car, it’s also convenient to go shopping. Overall, the location of Temple is pretty great and convenient; however, it’s close to African-American community, so many people will think here is dangerous. In my opinion, Philadelphia is actually an African-American city, African-Americans are not dangerous, they just take a large percentage of vagrants. (293字)

I had decided to join a Hip Hop dance crew in Temple before I went to the US, then I successfully passed the tryout of one of the top Hip Hop crews in Temple called BAMN, which group members are all African-Americans except two Whites. It’s really a honor for me to be one of them, but a big issue came to me: the “culture shock”. First of all, my English still not good enough to understand all the African-American English. Especially, the African-Americans in Philly like to use lots of local words, and that is quite hard for me to understand even to reply. Nevertheless, everyone in BAMN is so nice and patient. Therefore, I tried to chat with them, and asked them what is the word that I want to express. Then the problem was solved! I think the biggest point is I love dancing as every of them, the energy and the happiness are the same when we dance together. The main way we communicate with each other is by our bodies and our dancing steps, oral communications is no needed for us. Second is I don’t like “parties”. But that are what African-Americans love to do at Friday night, and also are the activities that dancers love the most. This time I didn’t do any change, that’s me. I don’t want to stoop to compromise, and do something I don’t like. However, the parties don’t matter at all, we still dance together and have fun together. Overall, BAMN is really an awesome experience that I got this year. In the aspect of the challenge in courses, I was too shy to discuss in class. I always worried about is my grammar correct or is my idea good enough. However, Americans will not think that much. I discovered that they share every idea they have, and they are totally free for sharing their own ideas. Then I tried to share mine, and their responses are so good. Americans always accept and respect others' ideas, that made me feel good.(349字)

(五)大三出國建議

If you are going to choose the university in the US, the suggestions I want to give are: 1. Don’t left your Taiwanese friends just for making American new friends. Most Americans are nice when you are classmates or colleagues, but it needs a long time to be true friends with them, and it’s hard to do that in only one year, so don’t left your Taiwanese old friends. 2. Never give up to try new things. After you go abroad, you will discover lots of things that you haven’t heard about or you cannot do well in a short time. That’s normal. But don’t give up to try your best. As I learned how to play football, handball, basketball, and video games in the US, although I can do well on football, I am a bad handball player! But I still love to try. There is no wrong for a newcomer for everything. 3. Work hard and play harder. Do not just study and work, it’s America! Go parties at Friday night, play sports with others, do something you haven’t try to do yet. The most precious gift of studying abroad is the experiences from your lives, not only the knowledge from your books. 4. Be an adult. It’s time for us to study abroad, also means we cannot rely on our parents like what we did before. We have to deal with everything we will face, and be responsible of what we choose to do.(252字)

(六)其他

I joined two dance crews this year. One is BAMN, another one is called XXL, it’s a Chinese Street Dance Crew. There are other dance styles’ dancers for me to learn, as Locking, Popping, and Breaking. I have learned a lot from this group. The main thing I have learned from them is that they made me recall what is the feeling of “just dance”. Not for a showcase or a competition, just dance for fun. That is truely a treasure for a dancer. Moreover, I am responsible for the performances of Taiwanese New Year event. For that, I also learned how to dance Chinese folk dance. Besides dancing, I also tried to play many sports in school tournaments. I joined Taiwanese flag football team and played as the center in the team; in women’s basketball team I played as the power forward, in handball team we got the championship at the end. Taiwan should put the tournaments in universities, that’s awesome!(165字)
