(二)課程學習

Module: MED133 Style Icons & Subcultures Module Tutor: Liz Lamb This module is about fashion journalism. To study and analyze about fashion histories, trend, product and so on. The main purpose of this module might be how to be a good fashion journalist. Through this course, except the basic fashion histories like things about Chanel, I have also learn many things about the style icons like Audrey Hepburn who lead the fashion through her film and became the style icon in that period, also like Madonna led the fashion trend in the 80s, and subcultures such as the hippie and punk(as the module title presented). Also, you can learn many kinds of clothes styles and their histories in this module as well. For example, the trench coat which is common to see being wore by many people walking in the street can be traced back to the clothing for Army officers which adapted during the First World War. The shape was shortened to just above the knee and wear by Land Girls, and also became many female’s uniforms at that time. You can learn such interesting knowledges through this module. Also, the tutor of this module is very nice and patient, who also help the international students like us a lot. Thus, you do not have to worried about cannot catching up the class or being involved in the group. For this module that is a brilliant choice for those who are interested in fashion and being an editor or journalist. One of the assessment was really interesting which is to choose one of the fashion subculture, study about it and analyze it, and present it as a content of fashion magazine and do the composing and art editing. There is also some field trips (pamper trip) in this course that brought us to the SPA of one of the famous beauty brand, Clarins, to know the products and experience the SPA in it.(325字)

(三)生活環境

There are two campus of UoS (University of Sunderland) in Sunderland, City Campus and St. Peter Campus. City Campus is near the University metro station, as for St. Peter Campus is near the St. Peter metro station. I think most of the course might be taken place in St. Peter. Thus, for me, I recommend live near the St. Peter Campus. However, the St. Peter Campus located on the opposite riverside to the city centre, live in the side of the city centre might be the best choice for me. As for the city centre (Park Lane (metro & coach station/ Sunderland (metro & train station)), there is one shopping mall called Bridges, you can buy almost everything you need there (store like: Tesco (supermarket), Boots (beauty store and pharmacy), poundland (one pound for almost every product), hair salon, clothing shop, etc.) You can also find bank like Lloyds and Barclays, mobile shop like EE and 3, cafe, foreign restaurant (Chinese, Thai, Italian...) in city centre. For detail about transport, you can take bus 700 and 701 for free with your UoS student card. Also, take metro to go through Sunderland and Newcastle (from South Hylton to (Newcastle) Airport, South Shield to Newcastle centre via Whitley Bay) for the price depends on the zone and type you choose. I suggest you to apply a 16-25 rail card to take the train of National Rail (go through UK) for cheaper price. The weather here is always windy. It won’t be very hot in summer like 20℃ at most, and might snow in winter.(257字)

(四)自我成長

During this year, I think I met lots of obstacles in the university and also in daily life. For example, my module choices did not go well in the beginning, and also I don’t know why I just can’t get my enrollment done. Moreover, off-campus, because of the unfinished enrollment, I can’t get my BRP (Biometric Residence Permit). Thus, I can’t get my bank account open as well. I think the only way to solve these problem is to ask. Because if you just afraid to do anything, and afraid to speak to others, no one can help you even yourself. I used to be a person who don’t like and nervous about doing anything by myself, and prefer to depend on others. However, encountering so many things in United Kingdom, now I can easily deal with problems by myself. As for the cultural aspect, the discrimination is very serious here, but still got many people being friendly and polite to such a foreigner like us. Therefore, if you willing to say, they’ll absolutely happy to listen, and I think you don’t have to care too much about the discrimination (Just assume they are doing this because the lack of educating and international perspective.) The most terrible experience I've encountered is the lost of my wallet during the travel to London. I thought someone stole my wallet when the panic of supposed terrorism occurred. After that, I lost most of my card and credentials, and have to be reapplied again. I think deal with all the things to UK police and visa institutions made me learn many things and became more independent.(279字)

(五)大三出國建議

For me, I experienced two kinds of live style that was completely different. In the beginning, I was very introverted, and didn't go out to make friends or go to any events or parties. I think it was quite good to save money or live in a healthy lifestyle (I mean like make it a rule to keep good hours or exercise regularly every day). After that, almost a half of the time past, I started to go out and make more friends. I thought I have known more about Sunderland and many things since I make lots of friends. The choice of which kinds of living style is up to yourself, but this might be the most precious opportunity that can live in foreign country by your own. The most important thing is to try your best to enrich your life there. Make some friends, they might be your best help when you are in trouble. Also, of course, just roll the dice, because sometimes things won’t move on if you do not take any action. So don’t be afraid to do any decision and talk to others. In Sunderland, because it’s kind of boring town, I suggest to do the part-time job no matter in Sunderland or Newcastle. If you work in Sunderland, you can save the transport costs, but the salary might be a little lower than Newcastle. On the contrary, you can manage more time for working. Working or attending some club (on or off-campus) are both a great way to make friends, improve language, and acquire many kinds of skills (communication, problem-solving skills, etc.). Moreover, do not bring any thing you think you cannot buy in UK so buy them previously in Taiwan to UK. Because you can buy almost every life's necessities and everything you need here for normal or cheaper price. I think the commodity price here are quite low and acceptable.(322字)
