(一)基本資料

I studied in Brandon University in Canada during my junior year. This school is located in Brandon, Manitoba. I've stayed here from Sep. 2017 to Apr. 2018. I've selected many kind of different courses that I want to learn this year.(39字)

(二)課程學習

My favorite course of the year in BU was the "Environmental Science and Issues". Mr. Malcolm is our instructor. The reason why I like this course very much is because the teaching method of Mr.Malcolm has the closest mode to the education in Taiwan. He uses the material that was made by himself and put it on the moodle, we can choose that if we want to print it out or not. In class, He gives adequate opportunities to let us ask questions or express our opinions upon the lectures he gives us. The contents were not very hard by the way, most of it were existed in our senior high school's textbook. Every week, Mr. Malcolm requires us to have a extend reading of a particular article about an environmental issue and discuss it on every Monday's class. Comparing to other instructors in other courses, The amount of homework were relative less, in other words, we spend fewer times on homework but also gain new knowledge easily. Moreover, during the whole semester, we only have one project which is writing the feedbacks of watching an environmental documentary, no other papers or essay are required. I think the hardest part of the course is the midterms and the final. It have three midterms and one final in this course and the final is going to test you all the things you have learned in this course. Therefore, spending adequate time studying the contents of every class is very important. However, if you pay attentions in class, it can reduce your times studying at home. Although it sounds a little bit exhausting before the tests, I still think it is the most modest and unassuming class of my year here. I really recommend those who were coming to BU next year to take Mr.Malcolm's class. (306字)

Although Brandon is the second biggest city in Manitoba, it is still very small. The campus is very small, either. The buildings are very beautiful and it is easy to remember the places and the classrooms that your course takes place. About Residence, I choose to stay in McMaster hall, which is one of the dormitory on campus that provides a independent sanitary of each room. The price are only a little bit higher than dorms which have public sanitary, so it is a good choice to live in it. The environment around the school is very simple, but at least, it can somehow fulfill our daily living requirements. Supermarkets, restaurants, dollar stores and even some bars and night club exists. The climate here in Brandon is the most interesting thing to mentioned. During winter, which is approximately December to February, the temperature can reach to -30 degree Celsius or even lower. It is necessary for people who lives here to have big coats or jackets that can shield themselves from the freezing winds. Due to we live on campus, we have meal plans offering us balances to have meals in the campus restaurant. However, after eating things like hamburger or subways for a long period, everyone gets tired of it. So, we will go out twice a week in average to have some different kind of food like Chinese buffet or all you can eat sushi. Buses are free for students of the University, so it is convenience to go out in the city without a vehicle. (258字)

(四)自我成長

In the end of August, when I just arrived Canada, I found out that Canadians speaks really fast English. It really needs time to practice the listening. The best way of practicing is try to make friends of local students or students whose speaks English fluently. I often make new friends when we are playing pool or table tennis in Darrach Hall, which is another dormitory for boys. They are really nice to us. playing sports games with them is the best way of international communication, too. In class, of course the instructors speaks really fast, either. studying abroad not only requires a better English listening but also a stronger pressure resisting. there will be many readings and many essays required and the time of finishing it were usually limited. To pursuit a good grade, you must sacrifice your leisure times and work hard on every single projects. the huge amount of homework somehow leads to a stressful campus life but it also provides us to practice how to make the best use of your times. When it comes to daily living, Canada is not as convenience as Taiwan for sure. For example, I had a toothache problem last year and it get more worse after a few days, I have no choice but see a dentist immediately near Brandon. In Taiwan, we can see a dentist in a very low price but it is very expensive to do even a single examine in Canada. I felt very unfortunate to spend that money. It is necessary to double check your health status before going abroad from home.(267字)

To those who choose Brandon University for your junior abroad, I will say thay you made a good choice. First of all, the basic fees including your tuition fee and your residence fee were cheaper than most of the other sister schools. You can save more money and go to different cities and other tourist spots in Canada or even visiting the United states to make good memories of your junior year. Maybe some of you will think about living off-campus, but I recommend everyone to live on-campus because it will be really hard for you to walk to school in the winter. Visas are really annoying, you must seize your time and finish applying it as soon as possible. After you arrived Vancouver, which is the first city most students will pass by, remember that you must get a study permit first, some of the agents will misunderstand your identity and regard you as a normal tourist. This will lead you into big troubles. When you arrived Brandon, you can go to the bank to open your bank account and deposit your moneys in it in order to reduce the danger of losing it. I recommend RBC, Royal Bank of Canada, it is near the school and it provides Chinese services that will be more convenient sometimes. Also, apply your Canada phone number, Canada's phone plan are expensive normally, Among all the companies, Koodo has the cheapest plan. The mobile data and the signals are all similar, so use koodo will probably make the least cost on your phone plan. Last but not the least, make sure that you have enough clothes for the freezing winter. (277字)

(六)其他

This year in Brandon, I've went to many different cities to travel. Brandon University provides many breaks and holidays that allows you to arrange your travel plan. There are many places that is worth to visit. During the winter break, I went to Vancouver to visit one of my old friend and have a one week tour in the city with her, I really love Vancouver's atmosphere and the foods there. At spring break, I went to Yellowknife with my friends that came from Tamsui Campus. The aurora, which is the northern lights are very famous in Yellowknife. It is so unforgettable to see a real one with our naked eyes. After all the classes were finished, we went to Banff and Jasper, the beautiful national parks of Canada. The scenes of the snows and mountains are one of the best views in the world. Finish the travel in Banff, I went to California in the states myself to recall my old memories of ten years ago when I visited North America for the first time. I will miss my life in Canada and USA so bad, hope I can came back in the future again. (196字)
