I took seven classes in total, I like all the classes. But if I really have to choose my favorite class, it might be Asian Eats. It is an intense class that I was really afraid and I wanted to switch class at first, the professor talks really fast, and the contents sound really complicated, and the main thing made me want to change class is we need to write a lot of papers, we have to combine learning outcomes and all the personal thoughts in each paper. We are not trained this way before I went to the US. However, after digging into the contents of the class, I know that this course is not that difficult instead, it is a really easy class with basic knowledge that I have learned in college. The class is actually talking about diffusion, transformation, and globalization perspectives of Asian foods, people’s foodways, and how people can be influenced when choosing food. I love the class because it made me knew that sometimes taking challenge is a really good thing that can improve your confidence, it is a good chance to test your limits and abilities which you probably did not know before. I never think that writing an essay and come up with ideas representing myself are easy before I got this class. After all the training, I realized that it is not hard at all to write a formal essay and telling others about what you think is an important skill to have in life. The course did not just give me knowledge about what we need to learn but also skills for formal academic writing and reading abilities. Although the contents sound easy, the things I learned are not just basic information but the skills that are useful in life. I highly recommend this course to all the students coming. (311字)

(三)生活環境

The weather in southern California is really nice, I felt like I live in Disney. Forever blue sky and it rarely rains in Long Beach. I am lucky enough to stay in a place that just four minutes drive from school. I do the homestay, it is very safe and the landlords treated me really well, I often got meals from them and they prepared most of the things I need for living. The campus is really huge, I remember going to campus with my uncle and we are all amazed by the size of the sports area and that was just a small part of the campus. There are different areas for different majors and there is the whole campus is containing upper and lower sections. The first semester, I took Spanish class and Sociology class, although there is a huge time gap between two classes, it takes me ten minutes to walk from Spanish classroom to Sociology classroom. The closest big city near Long Beach in Los Angeles, I go there almost every weekend. Since my uncles live over there, during the time that I am not used to everything in Long Beach, I felt lonely easily, I go visit them almost every weekend. To be honest, I like Los Angeles way more than Long Beach. Not only because my uncles are there but also the atmosphere and all the feeling of LA is different from LB. However, for study, I think Long Beach is a perfect place, it is better than Los Angeles because there are more natural in LB and it is a good thing to chill or calm yourself with natural beauty when there is too much studying. (四)自我成長

When I was in Taiwan, English for us is not that hard. Since all we do is just writing reports for courses, it is not for daily use. To be honest, I am not familiar with the culture and the usage of English in America. Just right after landing in the US, the real English life started. All the menus, all the signs, names of everything is not written in the language I am familiar with. I was really afraid at first, I can not read the menu quickly I need a lot of time to know what the ingredients are in a dish and I cannot pronounce many things in a right way. I felt really grateful that I got my uncles in the US to help me during the period of me adjusting to everything. I did not find a place to live when I arrived, so I stay in my uncle’s place, they brought me around Long Beach, with their help, I can be used to many things quicker than my other classmates who also came to CSULB. However,I did not really encounter culture shock but I did realize some differences in culture between Taiwan and America. People in America do not hold hands with friends when they are together, that is only for couples. So it is going to look weird if I and my girlfriends hold hands when we walk on the street. Also, people in the US sometimes do pay for their friends, but most of the time, they make everything clear enough, especially when it comes to money. In my culture, we normally fight in front the front desk in a restaurant paying for the bill. This is a really weird thing for Western people to see. (296字)

For life experience, if you really like outdoor activities, if you like to get tan if you like the sunshine, and if you love California cultures, Long Beach is a very good place for you to come enjoy. For the school experience, it might be a mass at first. Take me as the example, I did not get any class information and I did not know how the system of international student’s courses selection works, not until the orientation happened that I knew that it is so difficult and complicated to select my course. You need to make sure you choose the right class that can get credits, you need to make sure you get enough time to go through all the courses since you always need to finish the whole class and wait for the professor to sign your register paper. You need to manage every minute of your time during the first week which is the only time you can choose your classes. I recommend you finish choosing all of your class in the first two days. Many of the professors start to give homework and all the details to the class right after they finish the syllabus explanation. It is not a rare thing that you might not get any of your ideal course at the end. Need a lot of back up plans so that you have enough time to adjust your schedule. However, I did not know it works that way, I miss a lot of chances to get my ideal courses. I got a random course that is not my interest and it is not related to my major on the deadline date. It was totally a mass. Be prepared. (287字)
