(一)基本資料

School: Southern Cross University CITY: Lismore, NSW Period: 1 year Internship: Qualia/6 stars resort Location: Hamilton Island, QLD During my study at Southern Cross University, I was majoring in 'Written Communication' and 'internship'. The units I enrolled in Written communication was Journalism, creative writing and written communication. After 3 months of study, I moved on to my internship in the tourism industry. (60字)

(二)課程學習

My favourite class was written communication. It was a class full of energy, creativity and thoughts. Every week we gathered to discuss different topics from ethics to social issues and by the end of the week, every student will write one essay and research report about the issue of the week. Our professor is very knowledgeable and open-minded, instead of giving us answer or instructions, she gave us space to think and discuss outside the box. In this class, there is no right or wrong answer. Students in the class are from all over the world at different ages with all the different perspectives and this is what really intrigued me. (111字)

【照片說明:Way back to student village from Uni 】

The Uni is very close to my student village, however, due to our location is a small town called Lismore, it is really inconvenient for students who don't have a car. It will be at least an hour and a half to walk to the closest grocery store. The terrain in Lismore is up hills more than flat grounds which is to say, it is impossible for us to do groceries shopping by foot. Although the Uni do provide shuttle bus, however, it only operates a few times in one day also it is a huge problem that shuttle bus closed on weekends. It was winter season when I first arrived in Lismore, due to the uni is located in the mountain area, thus the weather is freezing cold. Lismore is a town that freezing cold in winter but boiling hot in summer. Frankly to say, with this kind of climate, there is both no AC or heater in student accommodation. In short, although the Uni has amazing learning resources but when it comes to living conditions, such as transportation, climate and living environment. All these factors would make me say that I wont reccommend.(195字)

(四)自我成長

“We all see the world through cultural glasses. The lens through which your brains sees the world shapes your reality.” Said by Julien S. Bourrelle (TedEd, 2018), the founder of Mondå, once argued how we see the world through cultural glasses and the difference will be by changing it on TED Talk. As working in a big community like Qualia with culture diversity. Observing, learning and understanding the behaviors of others can help us to fit with the behaviors of the society that we are in. Juien S. Bourrelle also said “If you can change the lens, not only can you change the way your brain perceives behaviors, but you can change the way your cultural differences.” Briefly to say is to be open minded, which I found out is the most important state of mind during the internship. I wouldn’t say working in Qualia is easy. I was struggling to go through all 5 transition stages that Sweitzer and King (1995, 1999) presented (Gower and Mulvaney, 2012). Above all the first two stages, anticipation and dillusionment is the hardest to conquer to me. I do have some experiences working as a premium food and beverage attendant before. However as soon as I started my shift, I felt so lost both in work and my life. Culture and language differences quickly became a high barrier that I was struggling to break through. From food ingredients, wine selections to service procedures. I learned them all over again. “How did you get this job?” once a guy from work approached to me and said. “You shouldn’t work in Qualia, you should work in a fast food restaurant on this island, but hey you got your pretty face. There is no need for you to have any knowledge.” Words like arrows, I flinched when it landed, searing hot and deep. I froze and tried to find words to snap back, but eventually, I couldn’t say a word. He was actually right, there are so many food ingredients I have never seen in my life, so many wine knowledge that I never heard before and now I am working in a 6 stars resort that everyone desperate to get in. I was depressed and pressured. Words seeped into my brain, I shifted between sleep and waking up many times. Although I was down and doubting myself, but what I always sure the most is that I will never give up so easily. Indeed, it will be easy to give up but I can’t run away from my problems. Choose not to face it doesn’t mean it will disappear forever. It always seems impossible until you try. Therefore, I chose to believe in myself and work harder, study harder. And that is the period of time I started to head into the third stage of the model – Confrontation.(Gower and Mulvaney, 2012) By reaching out to my supervisor for help (Gower and Mulvaney, 2012). We first had a face to face communication as to identify the problems which is lack of proper training. After figuring out the solutions, we decided to focus on every single problems at a time. As a result, my supervisor changed the training program to all the new employees in the restaurant and gave me a more comprehensive and closer training in every job responsibilities. With the help of my supervisor and encouragement from my colleagues and friends, the result turned out so much more better and I do start to enjoy working in the restaurant everyday. At the meantime, I also found the balance between work and myself. “Time goes on even when we do not”(Mafi,2013). Instead of complaining and being resentful, why not enjoy the moment and treasure everything you gain and all the challenges you have? Frankly sometimes, things seems more important when we look back. However it will be too late to regret and I don’t want to leave any regret behind. There is another lesson that is also crucial to me and that is – Bonding. Meeting people from all over the world and knowing their life stories is magical. Knowing their story is like reading a novel with one of a kind genre. What really blew my mind is that age does not define a person’s ability but your mind does. I met a friend who is 21 year old, he is now a head bartender and a supervisor in Qualia. He chose not to go to college when he was 18 and travel around the world, chasing his passion of travel and tourism hospitality. Despite his young age, he has hard working personality and sense of responsibility and when compare to most of the people, he has abundant of experiences in different departments. However in the other hand, there is a girl who is 30 year old, she resigned after 3 weeks working in Qualia. Call sick when she don’t want to work, doing short cut during the work. She is currently traveling as well, but at the same time, running away from realities. Life is weird, people are weird. We drifts with our own purpose but somehow time bring us together. We learn from each other and grow through the process, however when the time comes by again, we separated. Throughout the days on Hamilton Island, I have been meeting so many amazing people. Together, we bond so deeply but eventually we have to say goodbye. A kind of goodbye that we all know it will be hard to see each other again. ‘And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances.’ (Shakespeare, 2018). This is a line that I used to don’t understand, but now I feel it deep into my bones. Life is like a book with different chapters. World is like a stage with so many different stories meld and flow. As we are playing as a main character in our own chapter we also enter into someone’s chapter. I have come a long way in my internship. I feel like I finally find a little bit of myself during the journey. I find a place that I belong also finally understand how important it is to be open minded while focusing on myself. When I just started my internship, I tended to cling to memory and people’s judges as if that define me. But now I know, what really defines me is what I do. In addition, I do really enjoy to being able to interact with my customers and make sure they have a good time during their stay. It is such a bless to meet so many people from all over the world and I also ffind out I will keep on improving and not afraid to push myself out of the comfort zone. Because that is when the best story starts. (1139字)

(五)大三出國建議

Never think of relying on anyone because this kind of thought won't take you to anywhere. Jump out of Asian bubbles and reach out to meet new people and you will find out a whole new world. Build your own network with people from different places, embrace cultural differences yet sharpen your eyes. Find your own confidence and stand up for yourself when necessary. It is scary and will be tough, be realistic and don't put up too many fantasies expectations, trust yourself and keep moving. You can either learn a lot during a year out there or still the same as you were in Taiwan. Take actions, believe in yourself.(111字)
