(二)課程學習

My favorite class is ''Introduction to Polish Culture and Civilization''. It’s a class from Centre of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners "Polonicum". Once a week to easily learn culture and tradition. The teacher is a Polish girl called Justyna Zych. She teaches us a lot about Polish cultures. I think it is a nice class for Taiwanese people to take due to we have little information about this unfamiliar country. The topic includes a lot. The course will provide students with basic facts about Poland’s history, geography, and political system, as well as Polish traditions, holidays, and cuisine. It will also introduce participants to the masterpieces of Polish literature, art, cinema, and music. Lots of foreigners will take this course. If you want to make friends from the different country, it’s a good opportunity! The teacher uses the different way to make the course more interesting. We play Kahoot or have some group activity to share information that we searched on the net. We are expected to actively participate in classes not only listen to the reason. The reason why I recommend this course is because we can know more about Poland and live like a local! In your leisure time, you can do something local people do in Poland, like drinking good Vodka, eat Polish dumplings (called pierogi) ……and so on. It’s really interesting to join holidays in Poland. On November 11, we can join National Independence Day and go on a parade with Polish people to celebrate their big day of this calamitous country. On Thursday in February, we can eat a lot of pączki (donuts with rose marmalade, really delicious!) to celebrate Fat Thursday. On November 1, we can go to a cemetery with flowers and candles to pay a visit to some respectable great people. To take this course, you don’t need to have any basic knowledge of Poland. You just need to have an open mind to learn different culture and try hard to assimilate into this amazing country!(339字)

(三)生活環境

In our university, you can see the different scene in each season. I chose some courses from Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies and "Polonicum", they all occur in the main campus. If someone wants to choose courses from different faculty, you need to pay attention to which campus you should go. If you are not an exchange student, it’s very difficult to apply to a school dormitory. The best way is to rent a house by yourselves. I live in Wolska, which is a residential area with good living function. 5 minutes by walking, you can reach a bank, pharmacy, supermarket, park, eyeglasses store or even a Chinese dumpling restaurant. By tram, you can go to school in 20 minutes (main campus). Although it’s really cold in Poland in winter, they also have four distinct seasons. Buying a coat or a boot is convenient, cheap and cheerful. Don’t worry if you don’t have one to spend the whole winter. Studying in Poland is really good to save money and travel due to the price. When it comes to transportation in Poland, I think it’s much more convenient then Taipei. You can reach your destination by tram, bus, or metro. In the night, they also provide night bus! If you buy a 90-day transportation pass, it’s only cost you 1200 TWD! Polish cuisine is really delicious. For example bigos, Zurek, golabki and so on. Cooking by yourselves is also a good idea to save money. You can buy fresh vegetable and fruit in Tesco, Simply, Biedronka or Carrefour.(261字)

(四)自我成長

【照片說明:Travel by myself in Sweden】

In the first time, it’s really hard to blend in with the European society. It is also my first time to rent a house outside, open a bank account, and have a telephone number. It seems easy to do these things in American but not in Poland cause they don’t use English widely. The solution is to go to shops near the center. In there you can find more staff who can speak English to help you. It’s better to learn some Polish although you just stay here for one year. Learning Polish can make you feel more convenient to counter some problems in Poland. I think Polish is not enthusiastic and friendly as Taiwanese at all (although there are still some people give you a hand when you have troubles). In the aspect of choosing the course, it’s much more difficult than choosing courses in Tamkang University. At first, you need to fill in a learning agreement then give it to each coordinator (every department has their own coordinator) to get the learning agreement signed (some coordinators require you to go in person instead of sending by mail). After those long process, log in to your own account of USOS system and register the course (each department has the different deadline for registering for the class). However, we are just ‘’visiting students’’, not ‘’Erasmus’’ nor ‘’exchange students’’, we don’t have the authority to assess to the system. In that case, you need to send email to each professor or system maintainer (most of the time you can’t find the right person and no one will help you except IRO) I can’t provide a solution to these problems. Writing email to professors and wait is the only way.(295字)

(五)大三出國建議

For those who are going to Europe, I think it’s not the best choice to improve your English ability since they don’t use English widely (especially in Eastern Europe countries). However, you can still make friends by living a share house with foreigners or participating in ESN activities. Not only study hard but also play hard and explore different culture in each country. You must try some Polish traditional cuisine, go to a bar to have some vodka (alcohol is cheap here), and participate in some Polish holidays. It’s a good opportunity for you to go on a backpack travel and do things that you afraid to do before. For example, travel by yourself or go skiing. Although you may counter in some troubles, it will become an unforgettable memory in your whole life. Staying alert is also very important. We used to regard everyone as nice and friendly people cause we grew up in Taiwan. However, not in Europe. Don’t trust every stranger and keep your purse in a safe place (not in your backpack!). If you lose your passport, Polish embassy will tell you to apply for a new one in Taiwan. It’s illegal to have a part-time job if you hold a student visa. If you afraid that you don’t have enough money to study abroad, having a part-time job when you are in Taiwan. Last but not least, having an open mind and not to worry so much, enjoy your life abroad!(252字)
