My favourite unit is ‘Hospitality Services Management’, guided by Dr. John Haw who is an interesting tutor. The unit is about the concept of hospitality 'service' management where the customer is the centre of the organisation. It develops an understanding of the links between a range of functions within the organisation to facilitate effective strategies and service management techniques for hospitality-related enterprises. In particular, this unit takes a student-centered approach and aims to develop ours' teamwork skills. In each lesson, tutor talked about different topics about the process of building up a service, problems that will face and some management skills. There are three assessments for this units a case study, portfolio and an exam. They are pretty fun because the student divided into groups and there are a lot of discussion opportunities, almost every lesson tutor will offer us a secession to share our opinions. Also, there were many chances to be creativities like the first assessment is a case study. We have to finish some articles then make up an organisation with our teammate. Provide an organization overview included name, the logo, vision and more details about operations like the target market, core and peripheral services. But the favourite part is the assessment 2 because we have to complete a portfolio for our organization more like a business proposal. We decided to create a no menu seafood restaurant beside the coast in Gold Coast. After we spent thousand hours to discuss and improve our work, we finally did it and came up a fantastic portfolio. It liked a baby finally come to earth and become a CEO of our business. It was an excellent experience and we learn a lot from this unit. Besides the work and assessments, it was a great time to know more about your classmate because we had a lot of discussion time and a chat group. Our teammate come from different countries and we had a great time together. (325字)

The Gold Coast campus is quite small, only 3 buildings and no any sports facilities. So, I seldom stay or visit the University if it is not a school day. Also, I live in Surfers Paradise, the central of Gold Coast so it is not close to the school. I have to take the bus and tram for 45 mins to 1 hr to visit the school. Therefore, I did not join any society or club at school but I did subscribe to the beach volleyball class every Thursday before. It was pretty interesting that I can play volleyball with some of my schoolmates and get to know each other as well. There still are bright sides of the school like there are a lot of seats and room for the student to study and discuss. Also, the student can make a reservation for the private room with TV for group discussion in the new library. Besides the school, I mostly stay in the famous place in the world – Surfers Paradise. Here is extremely convenient, I can get food, drinks, clothes and transportations downstairs and it is just 5 mins walk to the beach for my apartment. I lived in one of the tallest building in Surfers that had awesome facilities like 3 swimming pool, gym room, steam and sauna room. More than that, it is easy to get some Asian food because there are a China town and several Asian country’ restaurants on the coast. For me, I really love living here because of the fascinating beaches and weather. Not really hot in summer and not that cold in the winter. Blue skies and cloud as always.(273字)

(四)自我成長

After I lived here for almost one year, I did not face any difficulties or cultural shocks. It is pretty easy to live in Gold Coast. The biggest difference is to use and speak English and not Chinese. Of course, I still got problems to solve like finding a living place and internship placement but I believe that they are both valuable experiences that I will face this kind of problems in the future. First, looking for a place to live was not difficult but it takes time. Usually, I search on the internet first because it is the easiest way. After that, I had to figure it out which I can cross out. Personally, I want somewhere close to the supermarket and some restaurant also the bus stop and tram stations because I don’t have a car. Another important factor is the price. If an acceptable price that includes all bills, the facilities they have and furnished or not. After I decided it, I have to make an appointment for the inspection and get to have a chat with the owner. So, it takes a lot of considerations and time to find a great place to live. But luckily, I got a very lovely place to live with my two Taiwanese roommates. The second thing that I want to talk about is the culture here. People here are so chilled and you can literally talk to everyone after you greet him/her. Most of the people want to have a conversation with you more than say nothing and being awkward. Especially when I am working, the first thing to say must be ‘Good Day’ than ‘How are you today?’. It is so simple but it would not happen in Asia. I like this culture and it became my first thing to say when I meet any strangers now. It is just amazing that I am not afraid to talk with people now. I believe this is a great thing to learn and be use to it if I have to work in the hospitality sector. (347字)

(五)大三出國建議

There are two principles that I have followed from the beginning of this one-year study aboard program. First one is saving your time to do some meaningless matter then enjoy your life here. It is because you only have one year in a foreign country and spent a lot of time and money to prepare to explore the world. Next one is try more new things. Say yes to something you never do before. I think I did a lot of first time in this wonderful year, for example, skydiving in Cairns, scuba diving in Great Barrier Reef, sandboarding in Moreton Island and going on a road trip in a motorhome. They became the highlight of my life and fill up my dream list. Failure is not a bad thing, don’t be afraid of it. I think regret is the thing everyone doesn’t want it to happen. From saying hello to a stranger, maybe he/she will become your best friend. No one knows what is going to happen next but if you don’t try it first, it will never happen at last. One more suggestion is please think about what is the purpose of this study aboard program for yourself. After you think about it, go and do it when you are in the country that you choose and always remind yourself about it. Don’t let the excuse affect your mind to chase your dream. You will realize and understand this suggestion when you facing excuses.(251字)
