My favorite class is Representations Pacific Life. This course introduces students to the history, values and cultures of Hawaii and the various Pacific Island nations, as they are represented through the genres of poetry, prose fiction, non-fiction essays, plays, films (feature and documentary), journalism and media. Specific attention will be paid to the ways in which Pacific Island cultures have been affected by Western contact and colonization, the development of postcolonial perspectives in Pacific Islanders telling their own stories, and the challenges of sustaining indigenous cultural identities in the 21st century. Before I took this class, I had no idea of the history and culture of any Pacific Island, even Hawaii. I just saw the pictures and thought these islands are so pretty and peaceful. But through this class, I could understand what these islanders look like and what are their life really like. Three major groups of islands in the Pacific Ocean are Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia. We learned everything about them. During the class, we gathered together in a circle and the professor told us the different stories of different islands. We can share our opinions at any time. Sometimes she played the documentary and let us discuss the video content after watching the video. I always be touched by these videos because I think people never know what tragic things these islanders have experienced. There are cruel facts behind the beautiful scenery. Different islands face different challenges. Especially climate change is a really serious problem. Like Tuvalu, now they’re facing the sea level rise. The tide and wave are going to drown the island. And the residents of the Marshall Islands have been affected by the radiation of nuclear bombs for a long time. Because the U.S. government tested the nuclear bombs there. Because of the radiation, their physical conditions are getting worse. All of these people were forced to leave their hometown and move to New Zealand, Guam, or Hawaii. They became refugees and homeless people. Before I knew it, I was so disgusted with the hobos in Hawaii, now I feel so sad when I see them. Due to false stories and ideas created by Hollywood and sailors over many decades, the true diverse culture of these islands has been overshadowed to the point where these false ideologies seemed like the reality to the outside world. I think it is really good that this course is educating people about what these island lives are really like. (413字)

Hawaii Pacific University has more than five campuses in Hawaii. The main campus is Downtown Campus which I studied at. HPU Downtown Campus is several buildings located in different places in town, but they still have library, gym, self-study room, internet café and game room. To be honest, I was so upset when the very first day I saw the school because that was too different from the campus I imagined. The campus I was looking forward to is pretty big and beautiful, and there is a grassland where students can stay for lunch and nap. But it doesn’t matter, without grass, we can go to beach at any time after school. It’s very convenient to go to anywhere by bus from downtown. And Chinatown is just nearby the school. In order to save money, I like to cook by myself. So I usually go to Chinatown to buy vegetable and meat, it’s cheaper than supermarket. Although it is not a big campus, it’s so convenient that you can do everything here. Near the school, there are three banks, two post offices, more than 5 supermarkets, police station (they can speak different languages including Mandarin), so many restaurants from different countries, and many bus stops that we can go to everywhere on this island. Most homeless people stay at downtown, but they would not attack you or bother you. Just be careful some of them have mental illness, people will stay away if we see them. I used to share house with a Taiwanese couple and their one-year old baby. But I decided to move out because the baby cried and yelled all day even at midnight and early morning, it’s really bothered my life. I moved into a host family on November. I think this is the most correct decision I’ve made here. I could experience the local life; I could celebrate Thanksgiving Day, Christmas, and Easter with them; and I improved my English ability soon. The weather of Hawaii is pretty good and warm, every day is like summer. But it still has winter time. From December to February is raining season. The rainfall during this time is more than other times. Basically, wearing summer clothing with a thin jacket in Hawaii is fine. (381字)

The most difficult part for me was language. When I just got Hawaii, I had to deal with everything by myself. Before HPU started, I had no friends because I came here alone. But my English was so bad at that time so I was nervous when I went to the bank, the mobile shop, or the school office. I even couldn’t understand what were they talking about, they spoke very fast. I was glad they didn’t lose their patience with me because they kept repeating and explaining the same things to me. This is one of the reasons why I love Hawaii so much. People here are very kind and always be patience to everybody. Their life style is leisurely and pleased. Although my English has been improved, I still felt so stressed during the second semester. The first semester I studied at English Language School, that was a very comfortable and happy environment to learn English. Me and my classmates were like family, we studied English together without pressure because our English abilities are at the same level. But during the second semester, I took regular courses in HPU. Most of my classmates are locals or from U.S. mainland. On the other hand, most of my classmates are native speakers. It made me so nervous to speak in the class. Plus, the professors spoke so fast that sometimes I could not get it. In order to understand the classes more easily, I tried my best to preview before the classes and went to the professors’ offices to discuss the questions which I didn’t understand with them. All of my professors were very nice to me, they explained it to me slowly and encouraged me. I think Hawaii is a pretty friendly state. It’s a melting pot and full of Asians, so it’s not very likely to encounter racial discrimination. And I could make a lot of friends from many different countries.(329字)

Hawaii Pacific University offers a wide range of programs. Classes are small and there is room for interaction with your teachers. HPU is a very global university and you will meet lecturers and students from all over the world. The university has over 7000 students and they come from all 50 US states, as well as close to a 100 different countries. It is a really nice and friendly school for international students. If you want to study abroad in Hawaii, this is a good choice. But you must check the tuition fee clearly because the price is getting more expensive every year. And I strongly recommend you to live with host family. It is a good chance to experience local culture. Hawaii is a place full of local culture. You can have Hawaiian local food; you can learn how to dance Hula; you can learn how to make a lei; you can go some cool secret places where only local people know. The weather of Hawaii is warm and mostly sunny. But the air conditioning in buses, classrooms, and some stores is very strong. So you still have to bring your jacket with you to everywhere. If you do not like nature or adventure, don’t choose Hawaii as your place to study abroad. If you like static activities instead of outdoor activities like hiking on the mountains or diving in the sea, I suggest you do not come to Hawaii. You’re going to stay here for almost one year, you will feel very bored. There are 6 islands in Hawaii, it’s a really good experience to explore different islands. If you have time, I recommend you to visit different islands in Hawaii. It’s a rare opportunity to explore an island in deeply.(293字)
