2018大三出國輔導通報系統 - 留學心得報告[編輯]

(一)基本資料

In fact, I had been changing my mind for several times before the final decision. After a year, I can guarantee myself I definitely made the right choice to study in Oxford Brookes University for my junior year study abroad. It was chosen among the list. Oxford Brookes University is located in a vibrant Oxford city which is known for a significant economic, social and cultural contribution city in UK. The program began in the middle of September 2018 and ended in the end of May 2019. Over the year, I had seven modules which include Foundations of Marketing, The Entrepreneur, Europe and the World 1450-1750, Academic writing for Business, Foundations of Business, Digital Marketing and English Core Language skills 1b: communication and culture overall. (二)課程學習

Module: ‘The Entrepreneur’ directed by Dr. Simon Adderley In the first semester, there is a certain lecture which impressed me the most, ‘The Entrepreneur’. This module was leading by Ross Jordan who was one of the lecturer of the module. Entrepreneur has been an abstract concept in my mind for a long time. Initially, I had no knowledge of any topic in this lecture. However, the approach he delivered the lecture was impressive and up-to-date. He will always deliver the message which surprised me and made me think deeply. On the other hand, I enjoyed every lecture he had taught to us and the assessment we require to conduct. One of the assessments in the semester was to pitch on behave of the company pointed by lecturer. This was my very first time to practice a pitch for a hypothetical company. First of all, we had to gather as much as information of the relevant industry and its potential development. Next, we had to discuss and go through all of the data and details to find the strength and weakness combating rest of the companies. At last, we had to pitch our company with other groups in a board scenario-based. During the preparation of the pitch, it was a long process to gather the specific information and transformed it into a constructive data. Eventually, we did a good job on the pitch although it was a very competitive one. Through the every meeting we had had for the project, we were discussing, brainstorming, analyzing and practicing in every details. Undoubtedly, I would say we did put seriously effort on this project and we all agreed the good result of the project. Also, it was a new academic task for me compared to the academic assessment I had done in Taiwan. In my opinion, the academic teaching method and style had somehow different than what I was used to, but it was definitely worth to learn and train your brain into another level. (332字)

(三)生活環境

As you may know, Oxford Brookes University is located in south west England, Oxfordshire, where is 1.4 miles from Oxford city center. Headington Campus is the main campus I usually attend to the lecture. It is a modern campus which consisted of modern architecture buildings. Speaking of the accommodation, there are a wide range of accommodation options depending on different location, fee and feature. I was staying in Clive Booth Postgraduate Centre which is apparently for postgraduate student. Yet, if you are already 21-year-old, you are able to apply it as well. However, if you are not, you can also apply the Clive Booth Student Village for undergraduate student. I highly recommend to live in both of these hall due to the convenient distance and location from the main campus. Besides, you can go to the campus by foot in 15 minutes approximately. In General, England is known for its changeable weather. It is not a lie. You can experience four seasons in one day. Either in summer or winter, you will have both British summer and winter time schedule to follow. It is a time schedule based on the isolation duration which has one hour difference. The average temperature in South England is in a range of 18-23 Celsius in the summer and 7-13 Celsius in the winter. It does has a possibility snow in winter but not the heavy one. Though Oxford is not an urban city as London, you can still get any necessary product you need. In addition, there is a shopping mall called Westgate in the central city where is a good place for social activity. By the way, you can also travel to London via the coach during the day. With your student ID, you can have 10 pounds return ticket form oxford to London. Isn’t it worthy? Also, there are many type of restaurants you can haunt for, for example, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Turkish, Italian and local restaurant indeed. It is not only a functional city but also a historical beautiful town to explore especially in those unknown alley. Slow down your path and take a walk in this city then you will find out the unexpected beauty of it. (365字)

(四)自我成長

Recalling the fist semester began in so-called freshies week, I would say it was a tough week to go through. Due to the fact I wanted to meet as much as people I can, I put myself so hard to every single event I could attend. On the other hand, freshies week is meant to be meeting people and made some new friends! On the fist few days of the week, it ended up me questioning the social ability of myself. I was depressed and frustrated in myself for doing this tough task. It made me became antisocial because the difficulty of having a conversation and understating from different cultures. To be honest, I nearly gave up and told myself I was done with it. I didn’t want to engage and socialize with people at all. However, it says unless you tried, you will never know what is going to happened. Before I completely gave up, I gave myself few more shots to try. Guess what? The outcome became unbelievable amazing. I met a bunch of beautiful human being from all over the world who turned out becoming my precious friends. Nevertheless, I was not a big fan of British culture. Thus, I had a hard time to understand British accent and phrasing because of lacking acknowledge of the culture. Having a group project with local British students even the worst. I had been through a tough process to make everything on the right track. Initially, I can hardly understand what were they talking even it was English. On the other hand, I can barely interrupt a word of the discussion because the speed they talked. It was really a challenging time for me. However, I am glad I had overthought all those obstacles and had improved much more than beginning. Here is mine advices, if you are going to a country which you are not familiar with, do as much as research you can beforehand. You will never have adequate knowledge of the culture you are not living.   (340字)

(五)大三出國建議

For those who choose OBU of your junior year abroad study, I can guarantee you make the exactly right choice especially for those who obsesses with British culture. I hope you can experience your best foreign life experience in Oxford if you are desperate to experience how local British live their life. Please do not hesitate to put yourself out of your comfort zone, don’t be afraid to step out and meet the people out there because this is the best way to experience foreign life. However, being an open-mined person who can respect, learn form different cultures is the way to get along with people from all over the world. There is always an obstacle when you first try the new things you have never know or familiar with. Yet, this is the way to make your life somehow different. If you are not ready, it’s fine but you have to do it before you regret it. Eight months are not a long time to waste not even a moment. If this is your one life opportunity to live and experience in foreign country, would you still want to waste any moment? Nevertheless, English is not your mother tongue. We are able to make mistake and no one will laugh at you. Think about this, what if they can not even speak second language, you already know two languages which are two most spoken languages in the world. There is no harassment or fear to step back. All you have to do is DO IT. (258字)

(六)其他

‘A year to explore, experience and redefine who you are and what you want.’ First of all, I am truly appreciated TKU Lanyang campus provides this amazing junior study abroad programme for us to have a life-changing year. Everything I could have experienced, learned and underwent were all based on the experience I had had in Lanyang campus. If I would say, Lanyang build your swing, then you make it stronger and soar with it independently. It has been an unbelievable challenging year of my life. Apparently, I receive the difference of myself yet I can guarantee it is in a good way. Everything will be completely different as soon as you leave your home, Taiwan. You are your own guardian. How to live and what to live for are all under your control? It sounds like a stupid question I know but the truth is how do you live a life you won’t regret after a year? It’s a year of life exploring and self-developing mentally and physically. DON’T WASTE IT. (175字)
