2018大三出國輔導通報系統 - 留學心得報告[編輯]

(一)基本資料

Temple University is located in Philadelphia. The period I am here from August, 2018 to June, 2019. Last semester I took IELP(Intensive English Language Program) courses to improve my English. This semester I took temple courses and IELP classes.(38字)

(二)課程學習

One of my favorite course is a class belongs to IELP “ one book one Philadelphia”. This is a 7-weeks class in a session. Because of IELP program, In a semester, we have to take two sessions to fulfill the whole time policy. For each session, We can choose different courses. The reason why I chose this class is that I had the teacher’s class before. The way she taught is helpful for me. The teacher is a native American, and she is a bi-racial child. It means her parents are people with different skin colors. She is very kind and enthusiastic to share her opinion to us. Teaching style is so different in American classes. Teachers are so willing to ask question. If student have question, you can raise your hand to ask anytime. Teacher will be very happy to help you understand. In the class She gave us some topics about the book and let us to organize a team to discuss the question so that students have many opportunities to share options with other classmates. If student have question, you can raise your hand to ask anytime. Teacher will be very happy to help you understand. For the class, we have to read the book “sing unburied sing” ,share what we learn and exchange our feelings to other students and make a complete presentation to summarize the book. It’s totally challenging for me because there are 300 pages in this book and we only have 4 weeks to read. Which means I have to read it almost everyday. Furthermore, the book is written by a black American, there are so many idioms and phrases I have never known before. Because of the class, I learned more about American culture. The book mentioned some problems existed in the U.S. For example, hierarchy system, racism and how family influence kids. They make me figure out if there is a better approach to solve the problem. The class gave me different point of views to know more about American life. (340字)

(三)生活環境

The weather here in Philadelphia is nice, it’s hot in summer and little cold in winter. Sometimes it will snow in winter. In winter, I suggest to bring or buy some hoodies and parka to keep warm. The apartment I live, Diamond Green, is located at 1000 diamond street which is a little far from campus. We have a grocery and gym in the apartment. It’s convenient to buy some living stuffs. The gym is not huge but it’s good enough to do some exercises. I usually want to do exercise at night. It takes roughly 20 minutes to walk to school. In second semester, I rode skateboard to school. It saves some time for me. The closest supermarket is fresh-grocers, many temple students go there to buy foods and things you need in daily life. McDonald is the closest food store for me, it’s the only place I could buy food at the midnight. There are some food store on the broad street like China Star, Bugger King. And you can also have some different flavor food, Helal Food, sold by food truck in campus. When I first here, the most impressive store is Mr.wish which sells bubble tea and hand-shake drinks. Besides, the brand comes from Taiwan. It’s familiar with the drinks I had in Taiwan. Some places in Philadelphia is not very safe. Thief, robbery sometimes happen in the district in which black people live. If you feel unsafe to walk home alone, the campus police offer service to go with you. (259字)

(四)自我成長

When I first came here, the new life is fresh for me. I was very curious about how American life looks like. I was so excited to make new friends and can’t wait to explore everything here. Before the class began, I attended to an orientation which offered by IELP program. I made some friends who came from different countries. We had a great time in a trip to ocean city in New Jersey. I also went to However, at the very beginning, food is a big problem. Food in here is totally different from my country. I need to know where to buy food and learn how to cook by myself. Talking to people by English was a catastrophe. It’s difficult for me to understand what American people are talking about. They talk very fast. I found that I have some problems with listening and speaking skills. It’s hard to organize and tell what I want to express during the class. I spent a lot of time improving my English by pushing myself to talk and read novels. Sometimes, Living in a different country makes me feel lonely and lost to find the sense of belonging. Then I went to dancing club (Temple Breakers) which is a place I used to go to in Taiwan. People there are so friendly and kind to teach each other. We have practice time on every Tuesday and Thursday. Going to the club makes me happy and encouraging to talk to Americans. (252字)

(五)大三出國建議

If you choose Temple University, I will suggest you to find a good apartment which near campus or live with friends. Before you come to the U.S, take some time to improve your English as much as you can. English is important for you in everyday you live here. You don’t have to bring a lot of clothes, it’s cheap to buy here. For study, Temple university offers have some great organizations. For example, we have good library system. You can easily find books you want to borrow. Writing center is the most important place I will recommend to you. You can learn and improve English in different ways there. They can arrange Service staffs for you to help you correct the paper and practice speaking. Some people recommend to buy a car, but in Philly it’s not necessary to drive if you only stay in city. If you have time, go somewhere and make friend to have fun. Don’t stay at home for a long time as you have chance to study aboard. New York and Washington D.C are not far from Philadelphia. Taking bus in China town to travel is cheap and an efficient way. Uber and lift are good options when you need to go somewhere in the city. Philadelphia is an interesting city with many historical sites. For example, the liberty bell and independence hall. If you are interests in enjoying the atmosphere of history, Philadelphia is a great place you should come to. (254字)
