(一)基本資料

I was different from most classmates studying abroad in their third year of college. I postponed one year to study abroad. I choose Brandon University as the place to study. Brandon University is located in the city of Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. Brandon is also called “Wheat City” that it has cold weathers and enthusiastic people. (55字)

(二)課程學習

In Brandon University, the winter session was split into two terms running September to December and January to April. Each term is about four months. The winter vacation is from mid-December to early January, about two weeks. Therefore, if you choose Brandon University as your school abroad, I think that the best time of coming to Brandon is from September 1 to September 5. In the first term, I took the language courses. Compared to the normal courses beginning in early September, the language courses usually start in mid-September. In the second term, I took two normal courses, separately Business Communications and Outdoor Tourism. In the first term, I took the language courses. There are three courses, separately English Listening and Speaking, Writing, and Reading. The schedule is stable form 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Among the three courses, I particularly like the course of English writing. Apart from interesting teaching, Organized contents truly improve my writing. In addition, we have to freewrite in ten minutes every writing course. It is especially interesting. I love freewriting very much! You do not feel scared of your wrong grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. You just brainstorm to write down what do you think in order to force yourself to be accustomed to English thinking. In the second term, I took two normal courses, separately Business Communication and Outdoor Tourism. The two courses are not difficult. Business Communication is to provide me with tools for effective written and oral communication and develop effective English business skills. Tourism course focuses on dealing with and recognizes the spatial interrelationships between the user public and the resource base required for recreation and tourism. However, compared to Business Communication, I am more nervous when I took the course in Outdoor Tourism. It is because there is only me as an Asian in the class. (304字)

(三)生活環境

As for accommodation, I lived in the university residence in the first term and shared an apartment with someone else in the second term. Living in the university residence is more convenient than renting a house because you do not need to endure going to your university or residence in cold weather. However, renting a house is cheaper than living in a university residence. It is because you need to buy one of the meal plans for each term if you live in the university residence. The cheapest meal plan is about CAD$2000 and there is no refund. In addition, whatever you rent a house or live in a homestay, they usually provide a kitchen and you have your own room. There is a very important reminder here! Before you decide to rent a house or live in the university residence, you must think twice. If you intend to live in the university residence in the first term and rent a house in the second term, you have to especially send an email to inform the university, or you will pay the fine CAD$500. It is because if the university confirms that we live in the university residence and directly sign a one-year contract that the second term of the accommodation fee is cheaper. The climate in Brandon is very cold, especially from November to February. It is common that the temperatures are from under 10°C to under 40°C. There is always thick snow on the ground. Therefore, bringing enough and warm clothing is very important! In addition, there are 24-hours automatic air conditioning indoors and the weathers in some months are cool and cosy, so you can still prepare some summer clothing. (283字)

(四)自我成長

During this year, I had a huge conflict with someone else. At that time, I lost my mind and made my emotions dominate my behaviour. My daily routine became irregular that even affected my mental and physical health. There was dysfunction in a relationship for a long time. Thanks to the help of many people, I was smoothly and gradually out of the sadness. When there is no close friend or family to accompany or protect you, how to take care of yourself and solve problems by yourself is my biggest gain this year. At the beginning of arriving in Canada, I was scared of communicating with foreigners and I was even laughed at my English. At that time, I deeply believed that my English was really bad and hardly dared to speak English. However, after going through a period of time to adapt to the new environment and getting some encouragements, I became actively talk with foreigners. When teachers ask me questions in class, I am no longer scared to speak English. Therefore, “Trusting myself” is the best motto of the year. Please trust me! Most Canadians are friendly and happy to communicate with you. I only took two normal courses in the second term, so I had lots of free time. I cherished the period very much because it was especially precious that I could enjoy myself to plan my future and concentrate on my interests. Therefore, although I go abroad to study alone, it is a wonderful chance to recognize myself. (254字)

(五)大三出國建議

There were three main reasons that I chose Brandon University. The first was the factor of money. As far as I know, the University of Warsaw and Maria Curie-Skłodowska University were cheaper than other colleges. However, my IELTS was too bad to study and their quotas are relatively less so that their seats were soon snatched up. Although the cost of Brandon University was not as cheap as the two colleges, it was not especially expensive. The total that I expend was probably TWD$700,000 during this year. The second, I could take the normal courses even if I did not reach the grade of IELTS (6.5). I took the language courses in the first term and took two normal courses in the second term. The third, Canadian culture was really beautiful. Compare to convenient big cities, I prefer peaceful rural areas. Therefore, Brandon University, which is located in a small countryside, was very suitable for me. In addition, the scenery and climates of Canada have a great difference from Taiwanese, so it is a good opportunity to experience a different life. In brief, I recommend Brandon University as your school abroad because of cheap tuition, preferential plan and wonderful culture. The year of studying abroad was an unforgettable experience. Many things have happened. There is happiness, sadness, and anger. I meet various people who have different personalities, beliefs, and advantages. I experience Canadian culture without my family companionship. The most important, I successfully accomplish the plan of studying abroad! The experience is so wonderful that you may look forward to your experience. (262字)

(六)其他

I took advantage of the winter vacation to travel in Calgary with some Chinese. We drove directly from Brandon to Calgary. Although it was cheaper than taking a plane, there were about 13 hours to drive. In the first three days of the journey, we skied at the Lake Louise ski resort and climbed the snowy mountain in Banff which was near Calgary and drove about two hours from Calgary. The scenery on the mountain was really beautiful and skiing was also exciting. By the way, if you are the beginner of skiing, Instead of the ticket that all areas you can ski, which is CAD$96, I recommend you buy the ticket that only the elementary area is allowed, which is CAD$ 30. Because most beginners almost only ski in the elementary area and the ticket is cheaper. Then, we took advantage of Christmas of Boxing Day that there were many great discounts and the taxes in Calgary were low, we wantonly went shopping in Calgary. It was a wonderful journey. (169字)
