(一)基本資料

I chose Temple University to be my second home for studying abroad year 2018-19. It is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During this year, I had courses from various fields instead of limiting myself to my major back in Taiwan. For instance courses from psychology, art, business and more majors. (49字)

(二)課程學習

My favorite class of all definitely was Glass. How interesting to know that any subjects are possible to be a major and how they were professionally taught. I had glass class for both semesters and luckily got to select advanced glass for my second semester. This course was absolutely mind blowing. I am so thankful for being able to join the glass community. The faculties and equipments were professional and fully equipped. In the Glass Program, I had to learn and create in all areas of glass. For instance, glass blowing, casting, fusing and flameworking. Not only owning the skillset but also knowing ways to translate ideas into work into reality. Our curriculum was divided into two parts. First half was the cold shop and second half was hot shop. In cold shop, I learnt the relationship between glass and any existing medium on earth. Using mechanical tools to shape, curve or even change the surface texture of solid fine glass. Not only to be familiar with features glass may contain but also broaden imagination of any possibilities of delivering ideal message through arts. As for hot glass, which is my personal favorite. Magic starts with the moment we took liquid glass out of the ferniest. Balancing between time and temperature control of the glass, learning how to transform liquid glass into solid form in its finest temperature with various tools. I spend mostly eleven hours per week in the workshop trying to master skills. Working under high temperature while keeping clear mind wasn’t easy. But I knew the hard work would pay off. Every steps of the way was worth the sweat and time. For those whom are attending Temple University and interested in art majors or glass specifically, I would highly recommend selecting this subject. (298字)

(三)生活環境

Temple University amazing University. With endless activities, events and sports game, amazing facilities and equipments. It offers so much opportunities that I could ever imagined. The main campus itself is highly safe with police and campus security. There are escort teams would walk students anywhere at night and free shuttle bus to take students directly back home. But there’s always a but. Philadelphia isn’t that safe to hang around alone especially during night time. It is common to get alert text message from school and police office for shooting report, armed rubbery all that kind of incidents. I lived off campus around ten minutes walk away from school. There are pros and cons and from my personal opinion, always seek out for people who had already lived in the area before deciding where to stay. There are areas to avoid and it is always important to take care of oneself no matter where or when. In my opinion, where you live makes a huge difference of the whole experience. Life there was pretty convenient. I could basically get almost everywhere with Uber, Lyft and subway. There are restaurants around school but most importantly plenty of amazing food trucks on campus. Despite all of the above, adjusting to the cold climate was a challenge to me. I was born and raised in a tropical island which made it harder. But on the other hand, I enjoyed the snow so much and even got obsessed with skiing! (247字)

(四)自我成長

Honestly, I did not find too much of difficulties during this year in school. In fact, I loved my school and appreciated so much for all the resources I owned. In class, learning how to speak up and actively participate in class was a breakthrough. Quite differ from the education in Taiwan. In the states, it focus more on the interaction with not only professor but also the entire class. At first I forced myself to raise my hand to speak up or ask questions at least one time each class. Day after day, I felt more engaged to the conversations and helped me a lot to stay on same pace with the whole class. On the other aspect out of campus. Living in a completely different country on my own was pretty interesting. I got to decide everything on my own and manage myself as well. Since it was also my senior year. I found it a great opportunity for adulting. Although it got a bit hard sometimes, but keeping balanced between school life, social life, self develop and self care were not always that easy. Deal with whatever have to deal with and be responsible for myself. That was pretty much all what mattered. Culture shocks were not manly from American culture, but was also from different people around me with various nationalities. Being able to be surrounded with such diverse environment was great opportunities to learn and broaden my horizon. I am glad that this year had taught me so much. Much more than I could ever imagine or ever asked for. And I am thankful for all the people I had met, decent friends I had made. It’s amazing how people can connect and bond together even they are from different corner of the world. As life goes on I will carry they with me for the rest of my life. (316字)
