Among all the courses I chose, my favorite course during the year was Introduction to Greek and Roman Literature, which is taught by Professor Sarah Harrell. She is a really nice person who is always patient with her students. In this class, each student will be randomly assigned to a group, and the members of each group will lead discussion twice over the course of the semester, which means that everyone in this class will have the opportunity to speak up in front of the class and share their opinions. During the class, the instructor not only give lectures by herself but also put us into groups of two or three to discuss several questions and share our thoughts to everyone. It helps me learn better on the texts and knows more knowledge from other people’s perspective. Moreover, Professor Sarah Harrell will upload all her course PDFs on iLearn so we can take notes online in case we are absence or missed some notes during the class as well as we can do a review before exams. At first when I take the class, I felt really stressed and tired, and even wanted to drop the class, for the reason that the texts assigned for us to read each day were too much for me. But after few classes, I am used to the teaching method and found that the class was actually very interesting and benefited me a lot. After this course, I am really familiar with the main genres of Greek and Roman literature (epic, lyric, historiography, drama, philosophy) through close readings, and we’ve read many famous works such as Medea, Aeneid and Metamorphoses. Besides, the professor and my classmates are willing to help me and trying to explain clearly to me if I have any question, which made me feel very touched. In this class, I made a lot of friends from different countries, and we also shared our own cultures to each other. (329字)

(三)生活環境

San Francisco State University is a public university located in San Francisco, California. The main campus is actually not too big so it only takes about 10 minutes to walk to each building. I often spend my time staying in the library while I’m waiting for the next class. The library is new and clean, and it is the best place to study and discuss homework. The gym in SFSU is free and new, you can use everything there for free with your student ID card. There is a shopping mall right beside the school. There are banks, mobile shops, restaurants, supermarkets, various shops and so on. It is a very convenient place for students to spend their time, buy their daily necessities or have a quick meal before or after class. In San Francisco, the summers are long, comfortable, arid, and mostly clear and the winters are short, cold, wet, and partly cloudy. I lived in Daly City during my exchange year, a place where is cold and always foggy. It is not a prosperous city but you still can find everything you need here. There is a plaza near my house that contains 99 Ranch Market(Asian grocery store), Subway, KFC as well as several Asian restaurants. Furthermore, the rent is much cheaper than San Francisco downtown or other places near our school. There is a bus stop right in front of my house, so I usually go to school or San Francisco downtown by bus. There is also free shuttle buses from SFSU to Daly City Bart on Monday to Friday. If I want to go to San Francisco downtown, I will take MUNI, which is the main public transportation in San Francisco, because the fares are already included in the tuition fee. MUNI is very convenient, you can also go to many tourist attractions such as Golden Gate Bridge, SF Museum of Modern Art,Bay Bridge, Palace of Fine Arts, Union Square and Pier 39 by MUNI. (329字)

(四)自我成長

During my junior abroad year, I have learned to be more independent and have gained a new, global perspective. Honestly, there was not too much culture shocks for me during my junior abroad year. It was probably because San Francisco is a diverse city, you can met every kind of person from different countries, and most of the people I met speak Chinese that makes me feel like I am still in Taiwan. When I first arrived at San Francisco, every person I met was really nice and willing to help if I have any question. Therefore, I gained confidence to speak up and to ask anything if I have questions during class or in my daily life. Furthermore, the cost of living in San Francisco is super high, so I eat at home most of the time. It is way too expensive if you choose to eat outside, because you have to pay both tax and tips for every meal. In order to save my money, I started to learn how to cook by myself. For me, the most difficult part during this exchange year is homesickness. Homesickness distracted me and I really miss my family and friends in Taiwan, so I video call them very often and also let them feel relieved. Sometimes I really felt frustrated, stressed and helpless, but I think it is a path that we all have to walk on. This is a opportunity for me to discover myself while gaining an understanding of a different culture. (253字)

(五)大三出國建議

San Francisco is a beautiful city which has various attractions and places to go to such as Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Twin Peaks, Union Square, Pier 39, SF MOMA, Alcatraz Island and so on. I would recommend everyone to spend your time exploring the city during weekends instead of staying at your house and play computer or watch Netflix. I also recommend living off campus than on campus because the public transportation is very convenient in San Francisco that you don't need to worry about the transportation from your house to the campus. There’s also free shuttle buses from the bart station to SFSU. In my opinion, study abroad for one year is a perfect time to explore the world and understand other cultures by yourself. Be brave, be careful and try new things during the study abroad year but don't do things that you will regret. People in San Francisco are really kind, so feel free and don't be shy to ask for help if you have any question. In addition, it is very important to take care of yourself well when you are in another country. Don’t let your parents and friends worry you. Besides, it is very expensive to see a doctor in the United States. I would recommend you to bring several kinds of medicine by yourself from Taiwan so you can take good care of yourself if you really got a cold. Last but not least, enjoy your life in San Francisco and make your study abroad year unforgettable.(259字)
