(一)基本資料

I studied at San Francisco State University for my junior abroad year. It is located at San Francisco, California. I was enrolled for two semesters, Fall 2018 and Spring 2019. For these two semesters, I took two language courses, Spanish 101 and Japanese 101. For other courses, I took two online classes which are GE course for students in SF State. I also took Asian American Studies for each semester as Ethnic Studies is one of the famous departments in SF State.(78字)

Last semester I took Spanish 101 wanting to learn a new language as well as learning the culture. It was a great experience in class with the professor and my classmates. I spent a lot of time practicing with my partners in class and more time studying in the library. I had to admit that it was an intense class that we had quiz every week in order to keep track on the course. Fortunately Profesora Rosanna was kind and willing to help students solving our problems. Since the historical background of America and Español culture and the discipline of every high school student taking Spanish class mandatory; half of my classmates had already had the basic level of Español. I spent so much time catching up with the class but sometimes still couldn’t get good grades on quiz. I was frustrated at first because I couldn’t understand what profesora said in class while my classmates could already response questions in Spanish. I spent more time in the library after I finished my class at 9 am from Monday to Thursday. I knew that I need more time reviewing the text just to catch up with my classmates. In class, Profesora Rosanna encouraged everyone to speak out and was supporting even my answer was wrong. I felt confident in class and was encouraged to make mistakes because Rosanna would explain the mistake patiently. For my midterm and final exam, we had group presentation in front of the class. I was nervous because I had to stand on the stage, using the new language that I was not familiar with. I had a good cooperation with my group members. We helped each other and we did an excellent job in our presentations. For the presentation, we did a lot of preparation beforehand and us rehearsal many times. The midterm presentation was a short performance that we needed to write our own script and perform in Spanish on stage. It ended up other classmates liking our performance and the profesora was satisfied. It was a great presentation. (347字)

SF State is an urban university which has convenient public transportation that allows students to community from different area around the city. It is a small campus which only takes you like twenty minutes to walk around the main campus. Our library is a five storied building and it opens 24/7 which students can study and hang out at any time. School has many housing offering to students, but it is still not enough for everyone. On campus housing differs from local students and international students, and the housing prices also differ from each dormitory. The price of on campus housing is usually higher than off campus. The average housing price for one bedroom is usually around 600-1200 depends on the area and the utilities. But for on campus housing it will range up to 1500-2000 per month including meal plans which is school’s cafeteria. For my experience, I lived off campus. I lived in Sunset district which is 8 minutes away by one bus. Sunset district is a safe living area which is not far from school. I commute to school every day by bus and it is really convenient that there are a lot of buses during week day. It is not a problem to live off campus. I have my own bedroom and bathroom in my room but have to share kitchen with other housemates. There are so many housemates in my house and most of them were from Europe. It was hard at first because I felt I had less connection with them, but overall it was great to have housemates that from different culture background. You can share your food and culture while you were cooking in the kitchen and you will have housemates who could pick up your packages while you were not home. I would say there was definitely culture difference and adjustment at first but we ended up good living together. (318字)

It was my first time leaving home for such a long time also to study in the United States, there were culture shocks for me when I first came to San Francisco. It was a whole new world for me honestly, and I felt stressed and insecurity for my self-confidence and my English ability for the first month living in America. I felt the English I have learned was totally different than the one that used in life and I became a little timid at first. It took me about two months to get my life on track and started to enjoy a new lifestyle in America. I went to as many events as I could, some of them were held by Taiwanese Student Association, Japanese Student Association and also some house parties. I would say it was a culture shock for me but a totally cool experience. You could meet a lot of new people at party and it was a time to be socialized. I still remember the first night my housemates moved in and they threw a big house warming party at the house. I was still not used to the lifestyle here and then it was another culture shock of American house party for me. There were like fifty people in my house and it was a little scared for me. But other housemates were so used to it and they socialized with everyone so fast even though they met them for the first time. It was shock but cool for me to see that and I tried to get involved. It was hard for sure but once you met some friends and you got someone to hang out with, you will feel much confident living in a new country. (294字)

For the one who is coming to San Francisco, I got to say learn how to cook!! The cost of eating outside in San Francisco was too expensive and as a student you cannot afford to eat every meal outside. It would save a lot of money to cook at home and as my experience I sometime packed lunch box for my meal instead of eating at school. We have microwave at school cafeteria and I would bring bento with me. Trust me you will save a lot of money by cooking on your own and use the money you save to travel around. Living away from home is not easy and sometimes situation could be harsh but it is definitely a great chance to become more independent and solve problems on your own. Knowing that your parents will not be there helping you, everything from schools to housing, from class to social life; you need to figure everything out by yourself. It would be challenging at first as I experienced but it will be fine at the end. Knowing what you good at and make good use of it; at the same time accepting your insufficiency and be brave to make mistakes. It is not shame to make mistake because it is always a lesson for you. Last but not least I would say do not waste this year, try to go to as many events as you can and put yourself in the most insecure situation because you would learn from it. (254字)

(六)其他

In the second semester, I joined SF State Associated Students. It is a student union that gathered all student associations in SF State. I was an intern under Project Connect. Project Connect is known for book loan program which borrow free text books to students every semester and as an intern I was assisting with the process of borrow/return books. Project Connect also takes in charge of middle and high school visiting. I attended the student panels with the high school students which I had the chance to share my school life as a college student at the same time as an international student in SF State. It was a wonderful experience with these high school students although I was so nervous at first. I was worried about not being able to answer their questions but it ended up pretty good. I got to know their idea about college life and they were curious about my country and culture background. The memory with other interns in Project Connect was also precious for me. We had meeting with everyone every Wednesday. At first I was feel right and any sense of belonging with the group, but at the meeting we share every week’s highs and lows with each other and kind of built up this community. Throughout the weekly meetings, I share the community with everyone from Project Connect and it was great to be in a part of the group. I would highly recommend joining any group in Associated Student and finding your own community. It is definitely worth it and I was kind of regret I did not join in the first semester so that I could know more student resources earlier as well as meet more people. (291字)
