(一)基本資料

For my junior abroad year, I chose to study at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. It’s located on Indiana County, PA., and it takes about one and a half hour from Pittsburgh to IUP. My study abroad started on 8/20, which was when my flight was. School started at 8/27, and for the first semester, I enrolled in some classes included Public Speaking, General Psychological and Contemporary Moral Issues. For the second semester I have communication media in American society, Basic Economics, Composition I and The Dynamic Earth. Finally, school ended on 5/11.(91字)

Among these courses, Contemporary Moral Issues and Composition I are my favorite ones. Moral Issues are my interests, and the professor taught us in a really comfortable way. He speaks clearly and in a good speed. Besides, he always solves students problems patiently. I still remembered in class I had some interesting topics such as utilitarianism, animal rights, casual sex, and virtue ethics. There were some points that I have never thought about or even know that would violate moral. Composition I is an English writing course for exchange students, it’s a multilingual language writing class. In class, the professor prepared lots of different topics for us to discuss and write about. We learnt some interesting writing methods such as narrative writing, sensory writing, free writing, and persuasive writing, and ultimately we will hand in a final project which is submitting an article for IUP magazine. It’s a magazine for international students in IUP. The professor encouraged us to start each writing from free writing, which asks us to write down any thoughts you popped up within 2-3 minutes without stopping. The reason why he recommended this way is that he thought we can express our true feeling and remember it. I can say that I love it this way because sometimes we care too much about the grammar or structure but forget what we need to care more about – feelings. Writings should not only focus on its correctness but also whether readers can get your ideas properly or not. What’s more, since it’s a course for international students, in class we’ll have lots of chances to have cross-cultural communication. I still remember there were some Arabic students and a Japanese student. Having communications with different people with a different culture is a really great way to enhance global vision. I highly recommend these courses for students who are going to study at IUP. (319字)

(三)生活環境

First of all, IUP is a beautiful campus, and it’s also a peaceful place to live. It located in Indiana County, and it takes about one and a half hour to drive from school to Pittsburgh. Second, there are two student cafeterias, North dining hall and Folger's dining hall, and some other stores selling pizzas, pastas, sandwiches, burgers, and Starbucks. There are also some restaurants near campus, for instance, Chipotle, McDonald’s, KFC, steak house, Thai restaurant, and some Chinese cuisines. Third, for dormitory, there are several building for students to stay at, and for students from Tamkung University, Langyang campus will have to live in Wallwork. I love Wallwork since it has a really comfortable place. It has several different room style, such as 2 person suits and 4 person suits, and it also can be divided into public and personal rooms. I chose a 2 person semi suit which I have my own room and I share other places for example bathroom and kitchen with my roommate. Wallwork is a place that made me really still want to live at. Besides, if you stays at Wallwork during vacations or long holidays such as thanksgiving (one week vacation), you might feel that IUP campus is a big park without any people. Forth, weather is the most important thing for students study abroad. To be honest, don’t bring too many clothes because during thanksgiving, you’ll get a chance to but plenty of clothes with a really cheap price. Besides, you can save your package weight for much more important things for example, foods and a hot pot. Please remember to bring some easy-to-cook food for your abroad year because I bet you’ll miss Taiwanese cuisine a lot. I brought a TATUNG steamer and I think it’s worth it. You can also choose to buy a hot pot when you arrive your school.(314字)

For culture shock, I experienced one on the first day of my first semester. My friend and I were going to take the elevator to upstairs and usually, in Taiwan, if we saw any people who are willing to come in, we would give him or her a hand to open the door for them. Well, on that day, we ran in front of the elevator door and looking forward to someone who would open the door for us. Unfortunately, they just look at you, and let the door closed. Yes, they just let it go. For the rest of my life in the US, I strongly felt that people won’t open for others who are going to take the elevator. At first I thought it was so impolite since you’ve already saw people in front of the door and you didn’t even try to press the open bottom. As more time I spent there, I realize that is how they do when they take elevator. It’s not impolite, it’s just a different culture, and you’ll get used to it. Besides, I love the education style there. In class, they raise their and to ask questions and answer questions actively. What’s more, you don’t have to really worry about answering a wrong answer. Let’s explain this way, if you answer it wrong, the professor won’t say “no, you’re wrong”. Instead, they’ll let you know you answered wrong without making you embarrass and also explain it. I love this kind of teaching style a lot since that’s how we can really understand what the professor is teaching and also still get courage in class.(286字)

Here’s a quite important part, suggestions. For junior abroad students, I strongly suggest you “do not bring too many stuffs otherwise you’ll have a hard time tiding them up”. “do not bring too many stuffs otherwise you’ll have a hard time tiding them up”. You might think about bringing winter clothes, but please don’t, just grab like 2-3 for you to face the beginning of winter. When you arrive IUP, the office of international education (OIE) will held some activities for international students, and one of them is taking you to go shopping and prepare for your winter, and that’s the reason why you shouldn’t bring too many stuffs. I also recommend bringing some foods that you might really miss from Taiwan or your hometown. In fact, we usually keep some can-use stuffs for juniors since we buy them there, but we won’t bring them home because they’re way too heavy or we just won’t use them in Taiwan. Thus, foods are kind of worth it to prepare more. Chinese foods are quite expensive in the US, though you can buy them on “YAMIBUY”. Besides, there are several markets around IUP and you can reach them all by bus, so if you are going to bring some stuffs like shampoo or towels, you can also put them away because you can but them all at “Walmart”. For on campus suggestions, I suggest some restaurant around campus, which are “Teerak Thai” and “Indiana Thai”. These two restaurants are pretty delicious, please try them. (261字)
