For these two semesters, beginning Spanish is one of the most interesting courses I took and taught by professor Nancy Crane. She is an amazing professor and one of the best professors I've ever had. She speaks very clear, talks slow, and will repeat stuff in English if needed. This course is about develop skills in oral and written communication and will be introduced to different aspects of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. The very first class, she taught us how to greet people in Spanish, say goodbye, identify ourselves and others, talk about the time, and count the number from one to thirty. Most people in this class have learned some basic Spanish, but the professor will not skip because most people have learned. She still patiently lectures for the few of us. The most interesting thing, she uses a lot of body language to make understanding Spanish easier. Now, I have learned lots of Spanish vocabularies and sentences. For instance, activities, sports, family members, seasons, weather, color, clothing, daily routine, personal hygiene, describe food, describe the location of people and things, and ask questions in Spanish, etc. Some words are similar to English, so that will much easier to remember. And then, if you don't like being called on, don't take her class. She likes to randomly pick a student to answer the question. During the class, she likes to play the games to help us remember the vocabulary. At the end of the each chapter, we have the skits. The professor will assign a partner, so each time your partner will be different. When you perform on stage, you can take the notes. But it cannot be written in Spanish. It is good for us because we can use Chinese words to present the pronunciation of Spanish. It is really a good chance that you can make friends during the skits. Everyone is so kind in this class and I really enjoy this class.(328字)

(三)生活環境

SUNY Cortland is in the geographical center of New York State, in what is generally known as upstate New York. It is about a 40-minute drive from Cortland is the city of Syracuse; the major attractions are local theater, the Destiny USA Mall, the Cheesecake Factory. New York City, also about 4 to 5 hours’ drive. However, there is something interesting going on at the college every day. There might be a movie, public lectures, sport events, etc. For the living, most international students live at West Campus Apartment and it is outside the campus. There are busses running between West Campus and the main campus. And then, West Campus Apartment is a 4 room house with shared living room, kitchen, and bathroom. Each of us has our own single room, and you will have 3 roommates. For food, we can cook by ourselves or purchase a meal plan and eat at the cafeteria. Bistro and Neubig are the main dining halls in the campus. It offers a variety of food options, including vegetarian and gluten free. There are also cafes in Corey Union and library. And also, there is a shopping bus running between campus and nearby supermarket. You can go to Walmart, Aldi, Price Chopper, Dollar Tree or Marshalls. For fitness, you can swim, do yoga, and rock climbing or fitness equipment in the gym. As for the weather, it is quite pleasant during summer and spring. Snow starts to fall in middle of October, last until in end of April. The weather is very cold with snow, so you will need a very warm coat.(264字)

(四)自我成長

Studying abroad might be the dream of many people. However, it was a challenge for me to study abroad. Think about it, when you in Lanyang, you can go home every week. And now, you leave Taiwan and your family, going to American. Although there are some friends go with you, everything there must be handled by yourself. In Taiwan, people are too dependent on their parents, so that they cannot take good care of themselves. It is a good way to be independent. At the beginning, there are a lot of procedures to be done, such as activate the bank card, calling card, or social security (if you want to work). Then, there are many people from different countries, different cultures, and different backgrounds. I tried to make friends with them, and sharing my culture with them. Sometimes, there are barriers between us, but most of time everything is good. In addition to learning from the books, I prefer learning while traveling. During this year, I have been to New York City, Toronto, Orlando, and so on. Museum is one of the places where you can learn a lot. Travel is also a good way to practice speaking. Everything you have to handle by yourself and when you have questions, you only can ask someone for help. Although learning is important for students, do not forget take the time to take a break and relax yourself. The author Neale Donald said, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” (251字)

(五)大三出國建議

Picking up and moving to a new country without knowing everything there is terrifying. SUNY Cortland is a school that supports a lot for international students. The international program office will hold a lot of events, such as orientation, trips, parties, or lectures. These types of activities are a great chance to make new friends. You should attend the orientation that will help you familiarize the campus and also make friends with orientation assistants. If you have any questions at all, do not hesitate to ask them. The orientation Assistants are very willing to help you solve the problems you have. SUNY Cortland have a lot of resources you can use, there are tons of emails about what is going on the campus, and outside the campus. Don't feel that your school life will be bored; there are a lot of activities you can attend. If you do not have pressure on your credits, you can choose the class you like. There are many interesting courses you can choose, such as Intro to Women’s, Gender, Sexuality Studies, Human Communication, or Beginning Spanish, and so on. And then, there is a library on campus. During the midterm or final exam week, library will open until 3 a.m. and a computer is available for students. The professors are kind and willing to help you pass the class, so feel free to ask them questions. If you choose Cortland for your junior year, hope you enjoy the life at Cortland and enjoy your studying abroad.(253字)
