Critical thinking and argument, was one of my classes. First of all, I would like to talk about my situation in SUNY Cortland. We only studied there for one year even not an exchange thing and it was viewed as “visiting student”, so we were categorized as “freshman” instead of “junior.” In the system, seniors will add course first and seniors, sophomores and finally freshman. Due to this rules, we didn’t have more choices to pick every class we wanted, so most of times you may have to ask the professor if there is any seat left to let you add the class. Some professors will reject you, some of them won’t reply and some will give you a positive answer. All of three were I had faced, the one who responded me to add the course was the professor, Sebastian Purcell, of “Critical thinking and argument.” In the beginning I thought philosophy was so difficult and I almost gave it up, but gradually, it wasn’t as hard as I thought. If you pay fully attention to what he said in class and reviewed after class, it will be easy to understanding. In the US, textbooks were so expensive. In this class, the professor has his own texts on the BlackBoard which was an app that almost all professors used for classes. What you needed to do was only to download and print it out before attending class that really save me a lot of money. In class, we did a lot of discussions for some questions. Some were from the text but some were from professor’s additional paper. About homework and exams, professor only asked us to upload the homework from texts that were the practices of what we learned in class on that day, most of them were easy question. It won’t be a matter to hand in late work, what he wanted just to make us practice what we learned. Exams were also easy that we can do open book, and the question were all about what we learned and practiced before. Overall, this class wasn’t that difficult and the professor took care of me a lots. This class was what I recommended for everyone coming to SUNY Cortland. (378字)

(三)生活環境

【照片說明:west campus】

During two semesters, I lived in West campus which was the dormitory out of campus. In west campus, a building contained 16 people inside, and 4 people shared a house including a dining table, a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom with shower and a bathroom without shower. The door of the building was la technical lock that only people in the building, RAs, RHD, other employees and UPDs can open. According to the communication, there were several school buses running over and over again during week days to commute student from west campus to on-campus. On weekends, there were shopping buses and downtown buses running to different part. Downtown bus as the word it would carry you to downtown Main street, it started afternoon. Shopping bus started from morning to 6pm. Every :25 school bus came to west campus to supermarkets, you can ask the bus driver to stop by the store you want to go when you got on the bus. Every :55 school bus came to west campus from Walmart to some stores to pick up some students and then went to upper campus. The route went again and again until 6pm. After 6pm, buses would only drive through west campus to on-campus not going to any stores. I usually went to Aldi that was a smaller supermarket than Walmart. You can get some fresher veggies and meat there, but in Walmart, you can get everything you want there. In America, it’s easy to shopping online. Order online, fill your address and the product would be delivered to package center inside the college store in Neubig the building located at on-campus. When your order was sent to package center, they would email you the information reminding you to pick up as soon as possible during the working time. Also if you wanted to return it, you can just give it to them, UPS went there every day to pick up and deliver goods. (323字)

(四)自我成長

照片說明:roommates

【照片說明:roommates】

I had 3 roommates (although Anna likes to say “suitemates” because we shared a house not a same room), Anna, Camille and Elishia. We got along with each other well at the first semester. Living together needed to share some housework like taking trash and recycles out and keeping clean in the shared area or others. However, in the first semester, Anna always the one do the housework initiatively, I did too, but not so much than her. So, at the second semester, she talked about his problem in our group chat that we can have a work sheet to balance who did the trash. However, both of them responded so bad and even said “I feel I’m so adult, that’s not a big deal. If you don’t want to do just don’t do it.” The way they talked was so unbelievable. And also, sometimes, at night, they went to bathroom without closing the door, you can hear the voice from what they were doing and didn’t hear they flush the toilet. Even, the flushing problem didn’t only happen at night. For so many reasons that they were too disgusting to endure, Anna and I wrote email to RHD, Melissa, who was responsible for west campus. She just assigned a RA to have a meeting with all of we 4, in the meeting Anna and I talked a lot of their problems with RA’s proof. Going through a meeting, you can understand how a human being can be so shameless. However, after this meeting they were better in some tiny portion, not a lot but still dirty. Some politeness we viewed as normal wasn’t work in different countries, just remember to protect yourself and don’t endure what you don’t like. Try to make some change no matter it works a lots or not.(311字)

(五)大三出國建議

As what I said in the former paragraph, roommate problem was kind of hard question. Usually, some cookers and utilizers in the shared area were regarded as shared things, so if you don’t want people to use your stuff just keep them in your room or have a cabinet to be your own area that they won’t use. When your roommates have some behavior that you don’t like or it influences you, talk to them directly or text them, they will understand. If you encounter the roommates like mine. Unfortunately, they would “take it into consideration” to make you angry. At this time you have choice to email RHD to tell her this problem, but she can’t ask them to move out. You can ask for changing room, but sometimes it didn’t work that it depended on RHD (no one knows the rule). In New York State, it’s illegal to smoke weeds. However, some people like mine still do it in the house and also my neighbors. On certain time RAs will be on duty in rec center, you can call them to deal with the smoking problem, but that’s only available during that time or call UPD. In SUNY Cortland dormitory, we have UPD as known as the police on duty 24/7. Just make sure and plan well you are not in the house when cops come in or you will be in trouble, too. By the way, the police won’t tell others who call in, so feel free to do so. (What I talk about the experience is depending on my case.) (271字)

(六)其他

I’m going to say choosing SUNY Cortland is my best decision ever. IPO takes care of international students a lot, holds several activities, provides many free things only for international students, and helps you to get SSN so as to work on campus. It’s truly nice school to enjoy your junior abroad!(54字)
