SUNY Cortland has a lot of great courses that provide for students. In my opinion, Sociology class is the most interesting class. Professor Scott Miller is a really good teacher. He does his best to let all the students understand each concept that he teaches by keep giving examples of some definitions or let the students define a specific word then correct them by giving the example based on the definition that they gave, in which he makes it more laughable. Those examples are really close to our daily life, so that students can related to the concept more quickly. Professor Miller is really good at writing essay, so he also offers students to come and ask him if they having problem with writing essay. Besides, before and after each class, he always encourages students to ask him questions. Professor is a funny person; he will give us any jokes during class if we still have time. But when he is serious, he will mean it. At the beginning of the semester, he did say that he required his students to stay focus while they are in class, which is similar to Ivy Lao Shi when we were in her class, and if he heard any tune from cell phone, he will have to ask that student to leave the class immediately. We only have 3 exams during the whole semester, so we have to really be careful for each of them in order not to fail his class. I did ask the professor question after the class because the concept is pretty hard to understand and the professor was patiently explained it to me. He kept giving examples one after one until I finally understood. I am really glad that I made the right choice of choosing his class. I really like and recommend this Sociology class.(307字)

There are many residence halls that we can choose to live during this Junior Year Abroad. Among all of the residence halls, I chose West Campus Apartments (WCA). WCA is a bit far from campus that requires students have to take school bus to get to main campus. However, the house is fully equipped with one living room, one kitchen, 2 bathrooms which there is one bathroom has a bathtub and 4 individual bedrooms. WCA Director is a very nice person that she helped separating all the students from same countries to different houses, which made us easily to make new friends and get used to American students’ life. I live in a house with a Turkish, an American, and a German friend which made my Junior Year more colorful. We made some foods and share with each other to have a taste of each country that we came from. There is one more advantage of student that live in WCA is that Walmart, United States biggest supermarket company, just 20 minutes of walking distance from WCA. SUNY Cortland also provide the shopping shuttle bus every 30 minutes on Wednesdays and weekends for students that doesn’t have cars. Aside from Walmart, there is another supermarket such as Aldi, where you can buy cheaper price of groceries, or Marshall that sells shoes and clothes. Cortland usually starts to snow on beginning of November and ends around March or April. The lowest temperature that I had suffered through was -30 Celsius degrees at Cortland. Cortland will be a fresh experience for those who never saw snow before.(262字)

(四)自我成長

Cultural shock is always the first thing that exchange students would encounter to, however, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” is what always in my head whenever I go to another country. Jet lag is the first problem that I had. I had to spend one day keeping myself awake then go to sleep when the night came like any Americans do. The second problem is that I have to learn cooking by myself since West Campus Apartment provided us a kitchen to use and we don’t have to buy meal plan. Cooking is a really fun thing to do, even though sometimes it requires too much time and effort. Third problem that I had encountered is roommates problem. Sometimes, when I came home after a really tiring day, but the first thing I saw was a bunch of dirty bowls and unclean pans, and all the anger came up to my mind. Well, everybody loves cooking, but not everyone loves cleaning after it. However, after we had meeting with Residence Assistant, we knew what we had to do. We discussed with each other, planned for everyone to take turns for taking out trash, vacuum shared area, or cleaning the bathroom, etc. Next cultural shock that I had was about American students. The learning atmosphere is very different to Taiwanese university. Whenever professor finished one specific topic, lots of students would immediately raised their hands and talked about their thoughts, comments, or related experiences to the topic without professor’s asking. They always willing to go to professor’s office to discuss about their grades or exchange their thoughts about the class, and the professor’s here are very willing to listen and discuss with them. However, the most shocking thing to me is that students here are putting their legs up to the seat in front of them while in class. That is considered really rude for us, however, it is very normal for them and professors here.(332字)

Go to another country that there is nothing in common to self culture is hard, and study there is even harder. Despite cultural barriers, we still have language barrier. However, if you willing to spend more time and patience, people will still hear you out and very happy to help you. Professors here are very welcomed students to come and talk with them, no matter your question is about class material, or just shared with them how’s your day. Just make an appointment with them, either throw email or in class, or just go to their office during their office hours. Always remember, communication is really important! If you have any misunderstanding with either your roommates or professors, talk with them first. Makes clear sentences, shows what you think, asks them for advices if needed, and cooperate with them to have a win-win results. If things not work well, Residence Assistants are always willing to help you! They are really nice people who will help you solve your roommates’ problem, but still, communicate with each other first. Prepared to learn some recipes because in the next one year, you have to cook by yourself and will probably shared your dish to other international students to have a taste. International Office’s staffs will host a lot of events for students that came from many countries to join together, such Niagara Falls trip, or Philadelphia trip for 3 days 2 nights, or you can check out other club’s events that offers to all SUNY Cortland students. We did signed up for Baltimore trip that hosted by Student Activities Board club for 3 days 2 nights at a 3 stars hotel with just $20. They will give a very good offer for students to join. Just remember to check your Cortland email regularly to not miss out any good opportunity. (304字)

(六)其他

This Junior Year Abroad is such a wonderful year to me. It might not as well as you plan at the very beginning, but if you willing to deal with it, it would turns out to be another perfectly ending. The hardest thing that I learned from the year is how to say goodbye correctly. It is so hard to say goodbyes, but I know that we will meet again in the future, SUNY Cortland!(75字)
