(一)基本資料

Charles University is located in the city of Prague, which is the capital of the Czech Republic. It is the oldest university in central Europe which has an almost 700years history. In many aspects, for the students who study in this city, Prague is a really convenient place, for instance, the easy understanding public transportations, supermarkets everywhere, the clear and easy bank and telecommunication applications, and in addition this city is surrounded by many other countries, such as Germany, Vienna, Poland, Slovakia…etc., so during the vacations we can easily take the buses or train to visit all these countries meanwhile border our horizon. In these two semesters, some of the courses that I select are related to my original professions such as the economics, geopolitics, the US government, and Asia security, but some of them do not belong to this field, for example, the Czech language, the journalism, global justice and the contexts of the television. The official language in this country is Czech but fortunately, the professors in this university can all speak in English and in a very fluent way, so it’s easy for the international students to understand what the teachers are saying during the classes. In these two semesters, I selected 8 courses in total, which I mentioned above, I really do like all these classes, but there’s one course that is my favorite and I think it’s really interesting the Czech language class. This is my first time get to know this, for me, the new language, the teacher of this class is really nice and patient, her name is Barabora. For the foreign students especially the students from Asia, it’s really hard to pronounce the Czech language correctly, you must practice many many times to get to the right pronunciation, but the teacher was always really patient and taught us how to pronounce the word until we are able to say it precisely. After several weeks of indoor practicing, the teacher brought us to an outdoor market and gave a worksheet, on it there were several tasks and we have to try our best to achieve them with what we have learned in the classes. During that activity, we have to find the prices of the food that the teacher printed on the sheet, so in order to finish the task you have to know the Czech of the number and many kinds of food, while we were trying to accomplish the task we courageously spoke out in Czech and eventually finished the missions. After taking the Czech language class for one semester, I’m now able to say some basic words and sentences in this language fluently, I can even introduce myself with some simple vocabulary. Apart from this, in most of the courses there were lots of international students, so while we were in the classes we can always discuss with the students all over the world to learn more about their culture or even get to know their perspective about Taiwan and we are always curious about the cross-strait relations from their cognition. Other than this, there were some courses that the proportion of Czech students is relatively high, such as the course” Journalism”, during this class the teacher always mixed up the foreign students and the Czech students in order to let us talk with a different nationality student and have a conversation based on a news or sometimes the Czech students will introduce what happened recently in Czech to the foreign students so we could have deeper understandings to this wonderful country, I did learn a lot in this class.(404字)

(三)生活環境

For the faculty of social sciences in the Charles University, there are totally three buildings, which are Hollar (building H), Optalova (building O) and Jinonice (building J) and they are all located in three different districts in Prague, the distance among these buildings are not close, fortunately, the public transportation in this city is very convenient so we are able to transport from building to building by buses, trams and the metro system easily. These three buildings have different field of courses which are Journalism, Economics and Politics respectively. The Hollar building is right next to the river Vltava and every time when we leave this building we can always see the gorgeous river and meanwhile the grand Charles Bridge right upon the Vltava, this building is close to the metro station Národní Trida which is one of the main stations in Prague. The Optalova building is nearby the main train station (Hlvaní Nádraží), and in 3 minutes walking distance you can get to the Václavské Náměstí, which has many restaurants and stores, you will never get bored and hungry when finishing the class at Optalova. In the building Jinonice there is a student restaurant which provides local Czech meals with reasonable prices and tastes good as well, it’s easy to purchase the meals, all you have to do is to charge the money into the student card and pay by the card after ordering the meal. This whole year I live in the university dormitory, although it’s not in the city center, the surroundings around the dormitory are still really convenient, we can easily get to supermarkets and restaurants by walk or by the buses. The amenities in the dormitory room is well-equipped, you can find basically everything you need in the room. Two people share a room and two rooms share the public space which includes the kitchen, the toilet, and the shower room. In Prague, the weather in summer is just like the weather in Taiwan, however when it comes to winter most of the time the temperature is under zero degree Celsius and it snows, therefore all the indoor spaces provide the heater including the dormitory, so don’t worry about the frozen weather in the winter. This year most of the time I chose to cook by myself in order to reduce the expenditure, after almost 10 months practicing I realized that my cooking skills really improved. And for the transportation in Prague, you can buy the one-year student ticket, with that ticket you can take all the buses, trams and the metro, the price of the ticket it’s really reasonable and with all the public transportation you can go to almost everywhere you like in this city.(459字)

Basically, I’m a very adaptive person in different kinds of the living environment, so honestly, there weren’t many difficulties while living in Prague. However, there was still a main problem when I was studying in this city, that is sometimes there are communication barriers with the local people who can’t understand English. While taking the classes this was not a problem at all because the teachers and the classmates can all speak in English really well, however when I went to the supermarket or when I want to ask people on the street some questions, most of the time people can’t understand what I was saying, and I always got the response that they want me to speak in Czech, under this situation usually I’ll take out my phone and click the Google translator or I’ll use my body language and some easy Czech words to express what I want to say to them, it usually works. Before studying abroad, I always get nervous when I have to speak in English, but after I came to this foreign country, I got a lot more chances to have the conversation with others in English, by all these opportunities, I learned how to speak more like a native speaker and meanwhile retard the nervous feeling. In the aspect of culture shock, the local Czech food is definitely the champion in my mind. The most famous cuisine here is a dish called “Knedliky”, it tastes like the Taiwanese steamed bread soak into the water, in my perspective this food doesn’t seem to agree with me. In addition to this, the food in this country is usually saltier and greasier than what we have in Taiwan, so after several meals eating outside I turned to choose to cook by myself.(303字)

(五)大三出國建議

It’s really a golden opportunity to study abroad for one year during the junior year. One year is not as long as you think, time flies, so seize the time of living in a totally foreign country. In this year you have to learn how to balance between the schoolwork and leisure, the schoolwork, of course, is really important, but use the spare time to travel around meanwhile border your own horizon it’s a great chance too. In my perspective, Charles University is a great choice for people who want to study in a European country. In this school, there are a lot of courses for you to choose from, and the study environment is really good as well, the teachers and classmates are nice and friendly, the school will usually hold some activities or trips for the students. Moreover, the most important factor that I strongly recommend you to come to study in this country is the position of this country. The Czech Republic located in central Europe, it’s surrounded by many other countries and it’s easy to travel to the nearby cities by bus, if you wish to visit other further countries, it’s really convenient to travel around by planes. Grasp this opportunity of studying abroad, try your best to fulfill your life, do what you have to do, do what you want to do within this year, don’t make yourself regret. Also, it is a great time to ponder deeply about your life and think about what’s your next step after studying abroad, so don’t waste it! (268字)

(六)其他

Among all these precious memories I made in Europe, there is one experience that impresses me the most, which is that I traveled to Netherland by myself. That was my first-time experience solo-travel before I decided to go travel alone I really did consider a lot, I was worried about all the things that might happen traveling to a foreign country, all my thought back then was that everything become so difficult when I was alone. However, after the end of the trip, the idea was completely overturned. A lot of things really have to be tried before I know that pre-existing fears are often superfluous. This trip was too great to forget, I’m really glad that I got the courage to decide to go on a solo-travel, it’s a totally different experience from other travels. It’s hard to say how great this trip was, my advice is that everyone should give a try to go on a journey alone, it’ll be an unforgettable memory in your whole life. (173字)
