(二)課程學習

There are lots of classes in the department of computer science at Winona State University. The most interesting class for me is computer system since that I’ve never take the course about Hardware ( I took more classes which related to software). Before the class started, I was afraid that I cannot catch up content of each class because there are many proper nouns in computer. However, this class broke my imagination. Dr. Zhang ( the professor of this class, and also the dean of the department of computer science) prefers to combine the theories and implementation in his class rather than just gives us lots of boring concepts. In the first half of each class, he gave us some lecture about computer system, and in the second half of class, he would validate his concept of the first half of class by implementing those theories. In this class, each students should buy one Raspberry Pi ( something like micro computer ) which is ARM based architecture, and he taught us how to code in assembly language, which is a lower level programming language. Nowadays, there are lots of tutoring class teach in Java, Python and R those higher level programing language. But I’ve never heard about someone who teach in assembly language. For me, this is a good chance to have this lecture because I cannot take this course in Lanyang Campus. Dr. Zhang is a good professor, he will try his best to let each student understand his lecture even if he has already got off work. I learned a lot from this class, like how to evaluate the performance of each computer, or each CPU, and even each program, and also, how does variable and memory address be stored or accessed in computer. I will recommend this course to others. (305字)

The summer in Minnesota is very nice, it is not hot and wet as Taiwan, and the temperature here is proper for humans. Although Minnesota is in the middle of America, still, there is some rain in the summer in Minnesota. It is better to bring an umbrella from Taiwan. As they entered November, the weather turned extremely cold. I bought lots of thermal leggings, thermal clothes and some big coats. The temperature of Winona comes lower than minus twenty degrees. Snowstorm is possible. It is possible to cancel all the classes and close the college temporally due to the snow. My classmates and I rent an apartment from PJ's Apartment, which is nearby Winona State University (five minutes' walk). The landlord will clear the snow in front of our door if it is snowing. For saving money, it is better to cook by ourselves. In our apartment, there are four stoves, one oven and one microwave in the kitchen. My roommates and I bought some cooking utensils from supermarket since the landlord didn't provide cooking utensils. For dining, there is one pub (or restaurant) in the corner of Huff Street and W Mark Street called ZaZa's, and fried chicken wings are sold at a discount every Wednesday. 5 Dollar Pizza Winona at the Huff Street is also a good choice for dining, as the name of the store, some of their pizza are sold in five dollars. Student restaurant is at the base floor of Kryzko Commons, nine dollar for one meals. (256字)

In the first half of my America life, I was unused to the USA and the people in the USA. I was afraid of talking to others since I wasn't good in English. I preferred to have Chinese food or Taiwanese food rather than American food. I felt that I didn't belong with Winona, and the life style here is not what I want. However, life is still going on, and the time is still running. I tried to do something making myself integrating into the culture of the USA like joining into many clubs (yoga club, ballroom club, and women of CS), talking with my classmates. After three months, I found that I was already familiar with the life in Minnesota and my English ability is also improving. About the food, I decided to buy some materials for making some Chinese food by myself, and I searched lots of recipes (Chinese food). (157字)

(五)大三出國建議

Do not bring too many clothes because you may buy lots of designer clothes or big coats from outlet.
Do not absent from the classes without cause. Attendance in the USA is very important.
Pay attention when you travel. Tourists may be the target for stealing.
