(一)基本資料

Winona State University. Winona, Minnesota, USA. Studying abroad from July 28, 2018 until May 29, 2019. Winona State University is one of our sister schools so that the credits I have earned in WSU can be exchanged back to the credits in Tamkang University. Thus, most of the course I took is mainly relevant to my major - computer science. (56字)

Artificial Intelligence is a prevalent topic in computer science recent years. Instead of instructing computers how to do with the task, we could build a model and make computers learn itself and complete the task by using the concept of machine learning in AI. AI is a field that really attracts me. Fortunately, I had a chance to take the AI course in WSU, and it became the most impressive course for me in abroad Studying. During the AI course, professor gave lectures in theories first. Later, students were assigned some in-class labs and homeworks to make sure how to apply the theories in practice. After half of the semester had passed, we students had to form groups, found a topic and applied the theories and knowledge we learned in class. Our group was interested in solving minesweeper by using deep learning AI. We built up a simple deep learning model at first. However, we found that the precision of the model was not escalating after several thousands of training. The precision did not meet our expectations. Therefore, we added more layers and neurons to the model and made it sturdier. In the second version of our model the precision had a great increase. It could now complete minesweeper in a classic 9 by 9 gameboard. Professors and other classmates were attracted by our topic during the final presentation. What’s more. Our topic was voted as the most interesting topic and gained the highest score among classmates and professor. It was an awesome experience for me to collaborate with teammates and completed a project together as well as gained favor from other classmates and professor in AI class in WSU. (279字)

Minnesota is a comparatively cold place in the U.S. due to its latitude. When I was in Minnesota, it started snowing from November to March. Fortunately, there were heat systems everywhere in the building, so I seldom felt cold unless I was commuting between campus and the apartment I lived in. As long as the temperature was below -20 degrees Celsius, students would be looking forward to class cancelations. There were several times I woke up early in the morning, washed, fed myself with some cereal, walked to the classroom and found that the classes were cancelled all day. Minnesota was a progressive place to live from my point of view. People in Minnesota were nice and it was common to greet with strangers. The crime rate was low I guess because I saw lots of people remained their engines running after they got off their vehicle for a short break to the convenient store in the gas station. Besides the snow days, I loved to go for a walk along the lake nearby my apartment after class, enjoying the fresh air and the scenery of the sun setting. Walmart supercenter was at the eastern side of the lake. Sometimes, my roommates and I would rent bikes from school and rode along the lake to Walmart to get some supplement for that week. (224字)

Although professors in TKU had given lectures in English since I was a freshman and I was quite familiar with it, I sometimes felt strenuous on their speaking paces and slangs when I was abroad studying. To overcome this, I often marked on the contents where I was confused and consulted the professor after class. The minimum and maximum credits for a college student to take in a semester were 12 and 18 respectively in Minnesota Universities. 18 credits seemed not much for Taiwanese students since the regulation for minimum and maximum credits were 15 and 25 in Taiwan. However, when I took courses for 18 credits in the first semester, the after-class assignments tormented me for all nights. I went to the reading room every night. Even in weekends, I usually spent an entire day there just to complete assignments and course projects. It was tuff and sometimes painful but I indeed learned a lot during these days. (153字)

Studying abroad will be an extraordinary experience in your life. You can get rid of parents’ nagging and dominate your entire time. But don’t forget the aim why you are here abroad. Is it improving English skills, make some international friends, or broaden your horizon of how is the other side of the world looks like? Few of my classmates lost directions and became homebodies skipping classes frequently because no parents giving them directions anymore. At the end of the study, they got many Ds or Fs in their grades.(91字)
