(一)基本資料

In the year from 9/2018 to 6/2019, I studied computer science in University of Sunderland. These are the courses I had studied in this year: 1) Database system development 2) Intermediate software development 3) Academic English writing and reading skills 4) Web app development 5) Internet of Things 6) Academic English speaking and listening skills 7) Heritage and tourism management (51字)

One of my favorite computer science courses was database system development. There were two professor in this course. David Nelson was very kind to answer any questions when workshop time. Although we had learned database system in TKUL already, the course in UoS was in a deeper level. New skills could be learned still from this course. On the other hand, the EAP courses were also one of the most useful courses to me in the year, which taught students lots of academic English skills. Especially for the writing class, which would helps your final year project a lot. The professor, Christine Underwood, was a very nice instructor to give students some corrections and useful suggestion on their academic English skills. No too much assignments were given so the class didn't make me stressful, but I still learned a lot during the class. Highly recommended to those who want to improve their academic English skills. (I recommend the higher levels. The lower level courses may be too easy for you.)(170字)

***Campus and accommodation: Sunderland is a small city in Tyne and Wear, and Newcastle Airport(NCL) is the nearest airport. Although Sunderland is a small town, it has everything you will need to live here. Sometimes you can buy things with cheaper price compared with other cities in the UK. There are two campuses of University of Sunderland. One is City Campus, another one is St. Peter’s Campus. Most of our courses was in St. Peter’s Campus, so living near St. Peter campus decreases the walking distance from home. Also, you can choose to live in Newcastle, which is a bigger city near Sunderland. I have some friends who prefer to live in Newcastle due to more options of entertainment and restaurants. Of course, the rent in Newcastle must be much higher than in Sunderland. Higher transportation spending and longer traveling time may be required to travel from home to school, which is about 40 to 50 minutes. An interesting thing is, there are lots of seagulls in Sunderland. You can see groups of seagulls when you walking on the street. The sounds of seagulls could be heard all day in my house, which was interesting but annoying as well. ***Weather and Clothing: As people all know that it’s cloudy in the UK most of the time, but what you should know is that it’s windy as well. This is what I was not used to initially. A waterproof jacket should be prepared or you can buy one easily here since the wind can destroy your umbrella easily. If you are a conservative person on clothing, or if you prefer Japanese or Korean style, I suggest you to bring enough clothes as here in the UK, their clothing style is very open, which may not be acceptable for everyone, especially for summer season. ***Transportation: If you asked me, I will say the transportation is very expensive in the United Kingdom. There are two kinds of main public transportation to travel throughout the UK, these are: coach and train. Traveling by train is very expensive for me, so I usually go with coach if my travel time is enough to do so. I describe the public transportation in the UK as: people buy their time with money. Usually, coach costs lower price but longer travel time, and train takes shorter time in a higher price. (There are different discount cards for both to save money. ) There are three Metro systems in the UK, one is just in Tyne and Wear, which was the major transportation I used. People can travel to Newcastle from Sunderland very conveniently by metro. ***Food: It is better to cook by yourself. Eating in restaurant takes really high costs. Not only that, but also, majority of the restaurants in Sunderland close very early. The main supermarkets you can see in Sunderland are Tesco and Iceland. Also there are some local stores but less options. The largest supermarket in Sunderland called Tesco Extra, which is at Stadium of Light station. You can go there easily by metro even by walking from St. Peter's campus. It’s just the distance of two stations from Sunderland station and one station from St.Peter's station. It is also worth pointing out that Asian food is quite available in Sunderland. Two Chinese supermarkets and a few Chinese restaurants are located in the center of Sunderland. (565字)

The first difficulty I found when arriving was the accent. I found that I couldn’t understand their speaking clearly and fully. The best way to get used to this is making more foreign friends. There are some international students from different countries not just Asian. Everyone has their own accent so this made me easier and more quickly to recognize the words they are saying. Another thing that have bothered me a lot was the public transportation. Their public transportation was not regular all the time. Sometimes the coach or train may be cancelled without informing. All you can do at the moment is waiting for the next one or go with other transportation. I have met this situation once before my flight at the midnight, which makes me almost failed to catch my flight. This was very ridiculous however the coach company won’t give you any actual assistance with your loss. So every time before traveling in the UK, my suggestion is to have a make-up plan always to avoid any emergency. As what I mentioned above, eating out is not a best choice to me, so I cooked a lot at home during this year. There was a great progress with my culinary skills, which is an unexpected growth to me, which I think may happen to every international students in the UK as well.(229字)

(五)大三出國建議

For those who have just decided to come to Sunderland, the cheapest way of traveling from Taiwan to Sunderland is flying to London directly first and take a coach from London Victoria Coach Station to Sunderland Park Lane. This is the best way for a low budget, however it will be exhausting. A more comfortable way is still flying to Newcastle Airport(there is no direct flight) and take metro to Sunderland. Of course, the Price must be higher than the former. For those who are going to study computer science in UoS, it’s definitely better to choose the YEAR ONE courses unless you know much more than what TKU have taught you. To briefly introduce the computer science courses, they learn a lot of skills and tools in the first year. And then the deeper level are taught in the second year using the tools they have learned in the foundation year. If you choose the courses of year 2, you may not be able to understand the course and finish the tasks given in class. The main computer language they used in software development is C#. And for travelling advice, I highly recommend the musical opera in London. Although the ticket is quite expensive for a student, musical opera is definitely a must try in the UK! (219字)
