(二)課程學習

According to four courses that we had taken in the ICHM, I like Food and Beverage most. The course enables students not only absorbing knowledge of multiple wines and cocktails, but also learning from different practical experiences. For instance, the experience of working in the Convention Centre for two times, practicing at the Tiros restaurant for eight times and three times of coffee lessons. During the coffee class, the teacher will provide some comments and suggestions after he tasted each cup of coffee that we made, in order to let us know the specific areas that we need to improve. At the beginning, all of the theory seems to be easy and understandable. However, when it comes to the practical sections, different concepts suddenly mix together. Afterwards, many students become struggle and do not know what to do next. The main reason is because there are too many information that we need to receive at the same time and have to reaction properly right away, especially when we working in the bar of our campus. For example, different types of coffee have different milk form standards. Therefore, we must be extremely familiar with multiple drinks’ practice and garnishes as well. To be honest, it is hard to remember all of stuff at first, but everyone pushed themselves with enthusiasm to do better and better gradually. With the theory which taught in F&B class, the practicum really helped students to have better understanding of teamwork, communication skills and professionalism. By different shifts and working environment, it is perceivable that basic knowledge has strong connection with guest serving. Owing to the stable foundation we had lay before the practicum, it actually makes multitasking easier at the workplace. Through the process of training, the overall experiences will profoundly benefit the students who choose Food and Beverage as their future career.(308字)

(三)生活環境

With the study abroad program, all of ICHM students have to study half year in Adelaide and choose another city for having half-year internship in the second semester. Accordingly, I chose to go to Gold Coast as my industry placement. In order to introduce what I had experienced, I will introduce both of the cities in details. To begin with, ICHM is located in the suburb of Adelaide, which is the fifth biggest city in Australia. It takes less than half hour to the city and China town. From my point of view, Adelaide is a special city which is different from other famous cities. With the peaceful atmosphere there, you can feel that people are even more lovely and friendly. Furthermore, the student accommodation which called RIH will hold many different kinds of activities for students to join, for example, welcome day, international food fair and Christmas party. Nevertheless, the weather was a little bit colder and drier compare to Taiwan, so some students would need more time to get used to it. Secondly, Gold Coast is a sixth-largest coastal city in Australia. In recent years, Gold Coast becomes an iconic tourist destination and widely known for its sunny subtropical climate, surfing beaches and theme parks. Consequently, multicultural tourist is one of the main reasons why I chose Gold Coast’s hotel as my workplace. Moreover, the place we lived is nearby commercial district, so it is very convenient to take bus or tram to work and travel around during the holiday.(253字)

(四)自我成長

In order to blend into the new working environment, some students choose to give up the problems that they are struggling with. On the other hand, others try their best to step out of their comfort zone and make as many friends as they can from different countries. Although staying away from comfort zone is really difficult at first, it still worth a shot. Therefore, I found out that the more I chat with colleagues, the more experiences I gain from them. By absorbing different experiences and suggestions, it helps a lot to improve my hospitality skills day by day. Then, one of my stayover guests left a piece of paper in their room. It was a handwriting note with some tips and full of appreciative comments. With more and more encouragements and achievements, every pain that I undertake during study abroad year seems to be worth and unforgettable. However, it is impossible that every day goes smoothly as I thought. During the busiest time of the hotel, I had made 25 rooms in a day by myself, including 10 departure rooms and 15 service rooms. When facing the tough shifts, I always told myself that difficulties are the opportunities to learn more. As an old saying goes, "Where there's a will, there's a way." Through the year staying in Australia, the most important thing that I learn is how to face the hardships with positive attitude. For me, chasing our own dreams is a life-long issue but the process how we chase those goals is even more essential than being satisfaction of the results at the end.(265字)

(五)大三出國建議

For those who want to apply ICHM or choose Gold Coast as their industry placement, I will indicate pros and cons for both freshman and sophomore students to consider deeply with different perspectives. Firstly, ICHM provides multiple opportunities in each practical course which enables students to know what exactly direction that they are interested in. For instance, whether you are suitable for being a Housekeeper, F&B or a bartender as your future career. On the other hand, ICHM located in Adelaide, which is a suburban district without too many attractions to travel around. As a result, it benefits teachers and students to build a stronger connection between each other. In addition, it also enables students being highly focus on their assessments and studies. Secondly, Gold Coast is a wonderful place to choose for half-year internship because you can experience from different kinds of guests who come from different countries with different ages. Take The Star Casino Hotel for example, sometimes guests may have bad temper because of losing money. In this kinds of situations, it is the best chance for staffs to learn how to deal with the complains. Moreover, casino hotel is always busy through the year due to lots of events. Accordingly, one thing that worth to be mentioned is choosing busy hotel means you don’t have to worry about whether your working hours will meet the college’s standard. All you have to do is persist in the work to the end and seize every possible chances to make best efforts on it.(258字)

(六)其他

During the half-year internship, many unexpected things happened in the hotel. Take one of my experience for example, one day the manager offered me a uncommon chance to work in The Star Darling, which is a promotion for staffs who work more than three years. To be surprised, I was assigned to make a VIP room that costs six thousand AUD per night. Under the system of six-star training, everything works so different that I have to learned step by step to lay a solid foundation. As an intern without too many experiences, I feel so lucky and grateful to pass through all of these within one-year study abroad program. (110字)
