(一)基本資料

The school I choose is the Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management which is in Dubai, one of the cities in the United Arab Emirates. Due to the starting day of the school was on September 9th, I had my flight on September 6th and when i arrived in Dubai, it was on September 7th. I didn't come early in advance for adapting my self to the new life or for visiting because there aren't many spots that attract me. According to the study abroad program, we studied the courses for three months at school and six months for the internship. In the first semester, I chose the courses which were food and beverage business, housekeeping operations, front office operations, English composition and rhetoric and beginner's Arabic. They are all the major subjects in the hospitality industry. In the second semester, I had a six month intern program in the Burj Al Arab hotel which is one of the most luxurious hotels in the world. One of the most interesting courses is the Beginner's Arabic. Learning the local language is the best way to get close to the Arabian and their culture. My Arabian teacher is patient and kind-hearted. Her teaching method is interesting that she often interacts with students during class time such as making lively gestures so that others could be able to say out the correct vocabulary, held a quiz competition to stimulate our motivation in learning as well as practicing. She also arranges several times of field trips for us to gain more knowledge of the Arabian culture. Once, she took us to a historical museum which displayed all types of documents and antiques. I also saw lots of images and videos for the past decades that conveying how all the buildings and the artificial islands were being built. It is hard to imagine that they could build anything. In fact, it wasn't untill I came to this city that I discovered that they really reached their achievement by designing and building the most unique constructions, such as the highest building, Burj Khalifa, the most luxurious hotel, Burj Al Arab, the largest indoor aquarium in the Dubai Mall, the largest artificial island, the Palm. At last, they create one of the most competitive cities which is Dubai. Second, our teacher took us to an Arabian restaurant. The meaning of this trip was not only to let us try the Arabian cuisine but also to let us practice speaking in Arabian. Due to the lessons in class,I gain more confident owing to the regular practice and exam. I am able to have a basic conversation with Arabians. For instance, introducing myself, greeting to the others and ordering the meal. In the future, I would practice more in order to be more familiar with this language. It could not only be used in making friends but also to expand my career through the global. After all, Christine is such an inspiring teacher and because of her, I am very interested in learning Arabian. It isn't as hard as I thought. However, I just have to spend time and put more effort on it. For a language, you use it or you lose it.(371字)

(三)生活環境

The academy that I study provides sufficient facilities such as cafeteria, library, gym, outdoor basketball court, tennis court, a convenient store and even a swimming pool. We are allowed to use these facilities as many times as we like so that we wouldn't have to worry about not having enough entertainments for us. Besides, the academy also provides us comfortable dormitories. Everyone has their own room and it includes a small kitchen and a bathroom. It is a caring design which considers about personal hygiene and habits of living. In Dubai, we could go to places by buses, metro or Uber. There are bus stops nearby the academy. However, most of the time we choose to go by Uber, which is able to take us directly to the place we would like to go. We spend our leisure time mostly at malls. There are two malls that we go often. One is the Mall of Emirates and the other one is the Dubai mall. In the Mall of Emirates, there is Carrefour. We usually go there for buying necessities and some food ingredients so that we can cook by ourselves to save money because there are few restaurants and no vendors along the streets which is totally different from Taiwan. In here, most of the restaurants are in hotels or in specific area. The living consumption in Dubai is much more higher than in Taiwan. In the Dubai Mall, we go there for shopping due to the discount season and usually the sale could be up to 50% discount. The weather in Dubai is mostly sunny and humid. However, in winter time which is from December to February, the temperature varies greatly between day and night, it is important to bring jackets in order not to catch a cold. The hospital fee is really expensive here. (305字)

(四)自我成長

Since I was young, I have always hoped to grow up as an adult. Finally, I started my first job as a waitress in an Asian buffet restaurant in Dubai. However, as an intern, there are few rules making us different from full-time colleagues. First of all, as an intern, we are not allow to get tips and language allowance. Second, we are not allowed to work over time. Frankly speaking, setting these rules makes me feel like they are not treating us with respect and integrity. Instead, they are just using us as money-making tools. Moreover, the company isn't following the rules. Sometimes we would have to work over time due to the tourist high season. Facing so many Chinese tourists, I have to speak mandarin instead of speaking English. I always help taking care of groups of Chinese guests. As an intern, we are forced to accept the heavy workloads. There isn't any different between intern and colleagues. Sometimes,I feel like I work even harder than the full-time colleagues. Honestly, I don't think asking reward(tips)for our hard-working is an excessive demand. However, my manager isn't willing to give and she kept saying that it didn't mention in the contract that interns are supposed to be given. The truth is that other outlet managers do give tips. My manager is a tightfisted person. In my opinion, it is an inhuman treatment. At last, I finished my internship one month earlier in order to break free from this kind of working environment. Although I am not satisfied with the process of my internship, I still gain a meaningful and impressive experience and also job skills for working in the F&B department. This is the first time I truly understand how working in an industry is like. Due to the low position, I wasn't able to adapt most of the situations that made me feel uncomfortable or even depressed. The most essential thing to do is adjusting my mental mindset into an optimistic status so that I am capable of thinking everything in the most positive way and wouldn't be influenced easily by the stressful pressure. Always "Stay humble, stay foolish".(364字)

(五)大三出國建議

If u feel like u only wanting to experience how the luxurious life could be like,I believe that Dubai might not be the best priority for u because the luxurious life could only be enjoyed when u are having a vacation here. The studies here are not as easy as in the Lanyang campus. It is a must that u have the responsibility to treat every work seriously. For instance, never be late for classes, always preview before the classes, do and hand in the homework on time. If u still act like the way in Taiwan better not to come because it is just wasting time and your parents' money. This is a place which u can cultivate an independent and discipline personality. Once u start your internship which also means u start working, you have to treat yourself as an adult. You will be facing lots of challenges everyday. For example, u might not have a good relationship with your manager or colleagues, your performance in the duty doesn’t reach the standard. However, don't be depressed because sooner or later u will figure out a suitable way to overcome. This is how u learn from the lesson and improve to show a great working attitude. Through the internship process, u will have a basic concept of what the reality situation in the hospitality is facing and how different departments cooperate to make the best hotel even the best and the most popular in the world, such as Burj al arab, Ritz carton, Atlantis. This kind of specific and meaningful experience will definitely lead u into a better future career. (273字)

(六)其他

While choosing a job, it is always important to think of what means the most to ourselves. Whether it is Money or it is Brand. This time I choose to work for a famous brand. However, I would prefer to choose a job I like more and really interested in for the next time after this lesson. (57字)
