(一)基本資料

For my junior year abroad, I went to EAHM in Dubai. The school over there gave out a very professional vibe compared to Lanyang because we have to wear formal everyday. The classes are also very different from Lanyang. There are more interactions going on. Usually when the professors ask the students something, a lot of people will raise their hands and answer in comparison of Taiwan. It's very interesting to see how people from different counties study compared to us Taiwanese.(82字)

My favorite class has to be Entrepreneurial Management. That course is totally different from conventional courses. Instead of going for the usual power point teaching way, they gave us activities. So each class we will be divided into different groups based on our personalities. We will then work together and learn how each individual work differently. This helps us learn how to become a leader as we learn the difference in people and find a way to solve any situations. And for the activities they give us, it usually helps embark our creativity. For each activity, we have to come up with at least 50 different ideas for each group, to achieve this, we need to be crazy with all our ideas. The class involves a lot of drawing, sketching, building etc. I remember one particular class where we have to create an object that has never been invented before. with many discussions, our group came up with the idea of Andy the robot concierge. Andy would lend a helpful hand in the hospitality industry to help translate, give medical aid, give company etc. All in all, it's a very fun and interesting course.(193字)

(三)生活環境

Our school is very small, it has a total of 4 building connecting. Two for the guy's and girl's dorms and two for the lecture halls. Our outer appearance of our school resembles old Dubai buildings. Short, flat roofed and sandy color buildings. Our dorm is amazing! We live in single rooms, so we have the rooms all to ourselves. each room includes a bed, desk, table, chairs, big closet, bathroom and kitchen! So we literally never need to leave our rooms. The weather in Dubai is very different from Taiwan. During summer, it is blazing hot. It also feel very very humid, so 3 minutes out just standing in the sun is enough to make you sweat. During night time, it get even more humid than the day time and is also very hot. However, winter is different. In winter, it's very dry unlike summer, and at night the temperature drops drastically so you would definitely need a jacket. One thing i miss dearly from Dubai is their food. Compared toDubai, Taiwan's food is nothing. Dubai has a lot of foreigners, so you will see a lot of international food. Also, I have never been to a restaurant where I wasn't satisfied. The food quality is amazing! Also, the restaurants closes very late at night compare to Taiwan. So the city is always busy 24/7.(223字)

Honestly speaking, one thing I hate about Dubai is that their public transportation sucks, so I have to Uber everywhere, and that is not very cheap. However, I'm not complaining since it's very hot in Dubai, so you wouldn't really want to be outdoors for long anyways. The classes are definitely way harder than Taiwan. You have essays that requires 3000 words to multiple reports and group projects every now and then. It's a bit tiring and would require you to pay attention in class at all times. Despite Dubai being the first Muslim country I've lived in, surprisingly I didn't experience any culture shock. Everything is either very interesting or made sense in a way when you think about it. One thing I never get accustomed to is the racism there. Dubai is definitely an extremely racist city. When you take a closer look at hotels, you will see how managerial levels are all "whites" and the people with lower positions are all "black" or "brown". You see Russians, Romanians, French, British walking around their pressed suits and Jimmy Choos with their heads held up high. And then you see Indians, Pakistanis, Africans, Filipinos running in and out of kitchens. Also, in Dubai, people give stereotypes to different race. For example, Chinese people are loud, rude, uneducated and impolite, so there is no need to look after them. British Peoples are cheapskates, and often complain over small things in order to get free stuff. Russians are the generous ones so definitely take very good care of them to get Big tips etc. I also absolutely hate it how Dubai's hospitality treats VIPs like kings and queens and treat "regular guests "regular". And you can see this a lot in the hotel I interned in. Also I feel like all hotels are a huge mess in Dubai. The managerial levels are all very incapable. They often don't know how to deal with emergency situations and definitely don't know how to manage employees as far as I observe. Anyways, interning and studying in Dubai made me grew a lot, I see all the things that needs to be improved in the hospitality industry in Dubai.(363字)

(五)大三出國建議

Honestly speaking, choose your internship place wisely. Try choosing a company that is more international as they often has more experience and treat their employees better and would usually not LIE to their employees. In international brands, you will often learn more as everything is more organized, compared to local Dubai brands. If you want tips, go for F&B, preferably high end restaurants. Don't think interning in Front Office is glorious as they often put you in concierge, not front desk, bare that in mind. Always ask if the hotel you are interning at will give you cross training. It really does help a lot as you can be exposed to more fields. Never be afraid to speak up as people in Dubai can be very mean, and if you don't speak up, they will not care. Also, ALWAYS double check and follow up with the person you are consulting, because in Dubai, if you don't follow up, you will NEVER get an answer, that is how unprofessional and inefficient Dubai is. One more thing, always know the name of the person you are speaking with, so if anything were to happen (which will definitely happen since this is Dubai), you have a name to blame. Oh right, one more thing to bare in mind, managers lie, so always always have back up evidence. These all sound very harsh and negative, but these are the things I really wish I knew before I started my internship. (247字)

(六)其他

If you were to give me a chance to choose which country I would go to, I would still choose Dubai, and that alone says a lot. Even though interning in Dubai was tough, but it is because of the rough water that I grew so much. Dubai can be very boring if you just stay indoors. But it is a very good place to get out of your comfort zone, befriend people from all over the world, and see how the 1%s live their luxurious life. From the tallest building in the world to the biggest mall in the world, Dubai really is a place you definitely need to go once in a lifetime and I am extremely grateful that I could live there for a year and experience all the better things in life. As glorious as some city seems, all of them have a dark side, and so does Dubai. However, after learning to embrace that dark side, everything eventually falls into track. (166字)
