(二)課程學習

Every course has its own specialty and pros and cons, every course has something for us to learn. Food and beverage, this is the course which was surprised to all of us because we thought this course would be mainly targeted on how to cook, as it turned out, that is culinary. The course food and beverage is actually about how to manage a restaurant, which contains cost control, HACCP, menu design, and the meaning behind sales and promotion for every restaurant. The professor for this course is very professional and also strict, every question you asked in the class can be answered from a very professional perspective. Front office is a course very new to us, the course is diverse into two classes, lecture and tutorial. For lecture, the category of the hotel and departments is the main content, for tutorial, we were taught to use operating system for front office which is Opera. English seems to be a very common class, but it’s a very chill class, everyone in the class got along very well, the teacher is also very kind and experienced, this course is the most peaceful class I’ve ever taken. Business is the course instructed by a very experienced businessman, he used to work in very big industry like Jumeirah or Disney, he looks like a very generous grandpa, but he is very strict, 3000 words report which took me 2 weeks to complete it is from his designation. The main content for this course is about business concept and analyze the real business model.(260字)

(三)生活環境

The academy is called Emirates academy of hospitality management, it’s located at Umm Suqeim 3 of Dubai, it’s just across Burj Al Arab, there is wild wadi waterpark and Madinat hotel nearby, there are swimming pool, basketball court, restaurant on campus, although it is not situated in the downtown, it’s still very convenient, there is a bus stop nearby which can go to mall of emirates, there’s a small mall called the mall , there’s also a small market on campus which call blue market. As matter of fact, so many things like food or grocery can be delivered in Dubai which is really convenient, as for the accommodation offered by my intern company, it’s very far from the school dormitory I was talking about, both quality and distance, I lived in international city phase 2, it’s in the middle of nowhere, it’s still a developing area, the reason for the development here is to cater to the expo 2020, it’s built for the teams for expo 2020, but for now here is just a barren, only construction site and dessert outside, the nearest supermarket took 20 minutes at least on feet. There’s shuttle buses to the hotel but only that. It will take lots of effort to go to somewhere else. For the weather, most people think Dubai is a big dessert, there’s no winter, wrong, there’s winter in Dubai, summer is very hot and humid, different from Taiwan, they are very humid heat, so hot that temperature will reach 40 degrees, the temperature can drop to 16 degrees lowest, just like the fall in Taiwan, cold and dry, winter is the tourist season in Dubai.(281字)

(四)自我成長

Since the moment we stepped out the plane, there came the cultural shock, a lot of Indians, despite English-speaking, their accents are way different than the accent we are familiar before in Taiwan. Although one of our partner is America Born Chinese, she still cannot understand their accents. So, we had to use every method like hand gestures to communicate with them. In here, most of the nationality is India, but also Russian, Pakistanis, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, South Africa are major group as well. In contrast, Chinese is a very small group here, even more so to Taiwanese. I finally realized why philipinos don’t want to work in Taiwan anymore, because they come to Dubai. In here, they have decent job, the advantage of language, why not Dubai. Dubai is a muslin country, so there are some rules we need to follow. For example, it’s not allowed to drink alcohol under 21 in a bar, they will check your ID, if you want to buy your own booze, you must get a alcohol license, the alcohol license for the bar is also strict, they will restrict your opening hour due to the degree of your license. Such a rigorous regulation, the price of alcohol in Dubai is always high. Two of my roommates are muslins, not only cannot they eat pork, but the equipment of eating food and cooking food must be away from pork, so my utensil is separated from theirs. They only allowed to eat Halah food.(251字)

(五)大三出國建議

First of all, I sincerely suggest to all my juniors, don’t take too much course from here, the courses here are quite stricter than you have ever seen in Taiwan, you will write a lot of long essays in English, don’t think that you can get a lot of credits here, in here, it’s very hard for you to pass. Secondly, don’t use the insurance in Taiwan, if you are sick that needs to go to hospital or clinic, it’s very hard to use international insurance in here, all you can do is pay the full amount, the regular price will be 6000 plus NTD, and then ask the hospital or clinic to give you the document you need to testify your sickness to your insurance company, but most of the hospital or clinic they won’t offer the document, therefore, the safest way is to buy the insurance in here, the academy will offer relative insurance for us buy, and not only it’s safe, but sometimes it’s faster when you go to the hospital or clinic. Moreover, the telecom company, there are three telecom company, Etisalat, Du, Virgin, I chose to use Virgin, it’s a new brand, it’s cheaper than other brands, 5 GB+50 minutes will be 86 AED per month (730 NTD), the rest of the brands will be less data and more expensive. Remember to bring long sleeves, there’s winter in Dubai, I thought there’s no winter in here, so I only brought one, and then frozen as hell.(259字)
