(一)基本資料

I studied in The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates in my junior year. The study abroad program was from September 2018 to December 2018. I took Front Office Operations, Housekeeping Operations, Food and Beverage Business, and English Composition and Rhetoric as my courses.(47字)

(二)課程學習

There are two courses could be my favorite. One is Front Office Operations, and the other one is English Composition and Rhetoric. The reason why I like these two courses is I learned a lot from the classes. Regarding English Composition and Rhetoric, the main thing about this course is to help us to improve our writing and speaking skills. In the class, we had some assignments every week, and we had to present it in front of the class. It is very helpful for us to improve our speaking skills. The most important thing is that the professor would correct our assignments and return to us. It is very helpful for us to know how to improve our writing skills. Regarding the Front Office Operations, it is a basic knowledge of hospitality. I can not only know academic information but also I can practically do the operation. The professor taught us how to use opera system which is most of the hotels use in the world. It means if I want to work in hospitality in the future, I should know how to use it expertly. Although the system is very difficult to understand, the professor still taught us to step by step slowly. Before the class started, she always gave us a task sheet. On the sheet, there are some situations and guest requests. Then, the professor would explain what the situation is and how to do in the opera. She did each step by step in opera, then we can use our own computer to practice. Before the course started, the IT department also downloaded the opera system on our own computers. So we could practice it after class by ourselves. And for the academic part, there was a small quiz every week. It helped us understand the information in the class more clearly when we were preparing for it.(313字)

(三)生活環境

The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management is located in the prestigious residential and luxury hotels area on the coast of Dubai, right opposite world-famous Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Wild Wadi WaterPark. Fully furnished on-campus single studio accommodation consisting of an en-suite bathroom, kitchen, bed and study areas in the room. There are 2 cafes on-campus serving a variety of different cuisines and also a number of restaurants located in the Jumeirah Hotels which are all within walking distance. Dubai’s other popular and vibrant hot-spots are easily accessible by one of the city’s many transport options, for example, bus, metro, tram or taxi. Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Marina, Dubai Mall, and Old Town, as well as the newly expanded Dubai Creek, are all located less than 15 minutes away from the Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management. There are also two international airports located within just a 20-minute taxi ride from the Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management. Dubai has a hot desert climate. Summers in Dubai are extremely hot, windy, and humid, with an average high around 41 °C days are sunny throughout the year. Winters are comparatively cool with an average high of 24 °C and overnight lows of 14 °C in January, the coldest month. Precipitation, however, has been increasing in the last few decades, with accumulated rain reaching 110.7 mm per year. Dubai summers are also known for the very high humidity level, which can make it very uncomfortable for many with exceptionally high dew points in summer. The highest recorded temperature in Dubai is 48.4 °C, reached in July 1996.(261字)

(四)自我成長

Before I came to Dubai, I had already searched the information about Dubai on the internet. Some of the information showed that the United Arab Emirates is a conservative country, the weather here is hot, and everything is very expensive. It seems like I need to spend lots of time on adapting the lifestyle in Dubai. However, there is not too much different from Taiwan. The only culture shock that I experienced is efficiency. In Taiwan, our university or the government has high efficiency in doing everything, so I also think that Dubai will have the same efficiency. However, it took more than one month to get the student visa. Even I got the same situation during the interview. I had to wait for a long time to get the answer from every hotel after interviewing. It meant I had to keep doing the interview before I got the answer. There is one month in every year called Ramadan which is fasting from dawn to sunset and mostly occurs during the middle of May to the end of June. Fasting means you can not eat any things or drinks water before the sunset. After the sunset the people whose religion is Muslim will have their Eid, the first meal of the day then they can eat anything they want until the sunrise. To us whose religion isn’t Muslim, we need to give them respect. For example, normal people eat three times a day. Before the sunset, we will have breakfast and lunch, which is the time not allowed to eat for Muslim. Every person cannot eat, drinks, smoke or chew gum in the public area before the sunset. Even women cannot wear shorts outside during the Ramadan which should be cover. Furthermore, the food count in each mall needs to use something to cover the entrance until the sunset. Because we can not eat the food in front of Muslim directly. It very disrespects and impolite.(327字)

(五)大三出國建議

For the recommend, I would like to say Dubai is an incredible and mysterious city. Most of the parents will worry about safety in this country, but I consider Dubai is 100% safe and even more safe than Taiwan. Because their law is very strict, If anyone violates, he or she will get the punishment that we cannot imagine. And from my experience, I strongly recommend that the students who are coming to Dubai for the internship you should start to prepare yourself for the CV and interview earlier. Time is running fast, only three months for studying. And during these three months, you also have to interview different hotels so it will be better to prepare earlier. And never give up, finding an intern is not like being a student, it is more like finding a job. Don’t be too disappointed if the first hotel refuses you. It is lucky if you interview one time then you get the job. If not, it is just normal. The internship is a hard time, but we will also learn a lot, which we might never learn in the academy. I would say it is very though but it worths it. And don’t be afraid to try something you have never done before, coming to a foreign country is the chance for us to stay away from our comfort zone and create some different experience. The last thing is to enjoy this amazing year and it will become the year you never forget in your entire life.(256字)
