2018大三出國輔導通報系統 - 留學心得報告[編輯]

(一)基本資料

The name of our exchange school is Indiana University of Pennsylvania which is located at the Pennsylvania, United States. This is the first time I come to United States and I am really excited about it.(36字)

(二)課程學習

My favorite course is actually a course that you do not need to enter a classroom. It is an online course (Principles of Hospitality Management) which means basically you will need to take the lessons, submit the assignments and the project all through internet. The professor who I forgot his name is very nice and patient even you might never meet him. You could ask him any questions through his email, he would answer any of you questions generously and friendly. But he is actually my course adviser, I have met him and I always went to his office and ask him questions about the course face to face. He always comes to good and practical answers that helps me a lot. He also recommended some nice place to visit due to the different holidays, though I did not go outside during the winter, I really appreciated it. Also, there was an interesting incident is that, one time, I complained about I am tired of raw vegetables because there was only salad in the United Stated, and he emailed me a recipe of mandarin orange dressing salad which tastes very good. Besides the online course, Introduction to Dance is my second favorite course in the IUP. There were no assignments during the semester, the professor only asked for tickets stub of opera of dance theater for bonus. The most interesting thing about this course is the final project, to choreograph a ninety seconds performance as a group. Since I was the only Asian in the class, my group members were all local American, and it is a great opportunity to communicate with them. During our group discussion and meetings, I learned about their culture and backgrounds a lot, and I bet they have known Taiwan and its culture a lot better.(301字)

(三)生活環境

Indiana is a small and peaceful town in Pennsylvania which took one and a half hour from Pittsburgh to Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The city, Indiana is so small that there are not much shopping malls, restaurants, or anything else. However, IUP has a fresh and nice quality of environment with less cars and the crowd of people. Also, the residents here are kind and full of passion. Since the town is so tiny, there is a less of chance there will be dangerous thing happening. By contrast, IUP is really perfect for me. The IUP campus is huge with a beautiful courtyard, many lush tall trees and a lot of cute squirrels. Exchange students live in a dorm called Wallwork and each floor has a CA who will help us to resolve our problems. They decorated the dormitory’s wall and designed people’s name tag as well. The only disadvantage was this building was poorly soundproofed, so some students may have to change rooms because of noise. I would take the free bus to Martins, Walmart, Indiana mall to shop when I need some food or daily necessity if I needed. During the spring and the summer time, the sun light was going down around 7:30 pm, I could see the beautiful sky with sunset every day. In the winter time, Indiana was colder than other state like Florida which means it snows almost once a week and I could enjoy the snow frequently. Though it makes my shoes terribly dirty and hard to clean.(256字)

(四)自我成長

The biggest problem I have encountered is definitely the language. The native speaker in the United States, they speak the way too fast and some words just sounds the same to me. It is really difficult to follow up through the class and since English is not my mother language, sometimes I might out of words or stock at some specific vocabularies. However, I did not feel dispirited or grief but felt “The authentic American English is incredible.” In order to enhance my English ability, the best way is applying to the conversation partner and international friendship program. IUP will help you pair with an American student and American families. And it makes a lot of chances to speak English, not only to get used to their speaking speed but also enhance our speaking ability. Another difficulty in the America is their medical issues. The air in the atmosphere is extremely dry and cold during the winter. It caused my skin very itchy and dry, and since you can buy only family standing medicine in the United States by its laws, I have some rash and makes me bleed all over my body. For the culture shock, the most impressive thing is Americans do not have an umbrella when it rains. It’s not a big deal but gave me a strong impression and it is cool.(227字)

(五)大三出國建議

The advice that I can give to the future student who is planning to exchange to college in United States or Indiana University of Pennsylvania is to respect the culture and race from all over the world. The states are a huge melting pot from different country, learn to respect others is extremely important. Also, I would recommend to buy some boutique and outfits like coats and jackets because the price is the way cheaper in Taiwan. Furthermore, the plane tickets are not expensive at all, especially the domestic line in the States. It means you could travel around the America and widen your views. The winter here is freezing cold compare to Taiwan, so I would suggest have a travel plan before Thanksgiving break, also buy tons of necessity like shoes and heavy coats for the cold winter. Winter break is a long break, some people would go back to Taiwan due to their home sick, but the ticket is pricey. My advice is to stay in the States, you could visit your friends from Tamkang in the different state or just simply visit your relatives. Lastly, the food here in United States is weather too expensive or is just taste awful, the texture of rice and meat is the way too dry; the sauce and the dress is also too sweet. Learn how to cook is pretty important, go search for the recipes on youtube or google or ask your mom how to cook before you go aboard.(250字)
