2019大三出國輔導通報系統 - 留學心得報告[編輯]

(一)基本資料

I chose to finish my junior study abroad program in International College of Hotel Management in Adelaide, Australia. The curriculum design of this school allows students to conduct six months of campus courses plus six months of industry placement each year. Participating in the study abroad program, I chose four courses, namely Food and Beverage Service Standards (BBHM102), Delivering Guest Services (BBHM103), and Employability Skills for Future Hoteliers (BBHM109), most of them are practical tendency introducing the fundamental skills and general knowledge of hospitality industry.(85字)

(二)課程學習

I chose four courses, namely Food and Beverage Service Standards (BBHM102), Delivering Guest Services (BBHM103), and Employability Skills for Future Hoteliers (BBHM109), most of them are practical tendency introducing the fundamental skills and general knowledge of hospitality industry. Talking to one of my favorite course in ICHM, it must be Food and Beverage service. About this course, it is divided in two parts: theory session in the classroom with whole year 1 student and practical session with a small group of classmates in the restaurant located in campus. There are three reasons that why I love this course. Firstly, I’m interested in every food and drinks knowledge, and I want to learn as much as I can about that. I think when I keen to learn something, studying isn’t boring anymore, and it becomes my motivation to learn. Our food culture in Taiwan is completely different from Australia, so it made me be curious to learn more knowledge in Australia. Secondly, in this course, we have a lot of different practical session. I really love the practical session because I believe learning from practice is more efficient than learning from books and words. Especially for the hospitality industry, we gain most of the knowledge, skills, and abilities while practicing. It’s good for us having chance to learn it before going on industry placement. Thirdly, except practical session, we need to go to work in a banquet in Adelaide Convention Centre and the restaurant in ICHM campus. Therefore, these experience makes us easily get into industry. And now I’m doing my placement in the food and beverage department. Although I feel a little bit nervous in my first week at work, I got used to it quickly because of those experience that I had done in ICHM. All in all, I I'm very happy that I chose this class.(311字)

(三)生活環境

I lived on campus in Adelaide. The life is quite simple and pure there. The dormitory offer three meals a day, housekeeping service, and a very cozy room. I had three roommates and we four shared a unit which included four private room, two bathroom, a simple kitchen, and a living room. It’s very convenient that it only takes 5 minute from our accommodation which we called RIH to the classroom. ICHM students and faculty who is not living on campus can also have the meals for free on every Tuesday, so on that day we would usually have lunch with our lecturers and enjoy a short conversation. The best part is the food is international because of a Singaporean chef. Sometimes we can have Chinese cuisine, Mexican food and even Indian dishes. There is a lot of different type of food you can enjoy during the staying. Nearby the RIH, there is a YMCA gym which is 20 minutes away from RIH by walking. It is really a good place to exercise and to release the stress from there. They are having the gym, swimming pool and even the class training. Apart from this, around the RIH and school campus, there has some Vietnamese food restaurant which you can find a good pho over there. It also has Asian style convenience store, we can find snacks or food in there when we were having the homesick. The weather in Adelaide is not as humid as Taiwan at all which makes me fall in love with this place. Though some people may not be used to the dry weather and low moisture, I think at least this kind of weather won't make you always sweat in summer.(286字)

(四)自我成長

At the very beginning of my study abroad that the journey is very hard and kind of frustrating because of the classic Asian lifestyle that I always hangout with the familiar people and most of the time that I only talk to the people who I know, I really afraid to break my comfort zone and make the new friend especially the foreigners. There was a huge different between my junior year and my study abroad year. The former was full of tasks and goals waiting for me to fulfill, but the latter was full of the leisure time forcing me to figure out what can I do. However, it’s a great thing to have a lot of free time to calm down and think about what I want to do in the coming future. At ICHM, plenty of assessments with many words limitation has improved my writing ability a lot, and strict writing rule, reference and citation regulations have also allowed me to learn more professional writing skill. It a great growth that I can now express the message with more precise words in a shorter time. After staring my placement, I spent plenty of time with my coworkers, supervisors, and guests. It was a really good experience that I had to speak English for 8 hours a day to communicate with everyone I met every day. I deeply feel that speaking English for a long time has improved my language skills, and I also feel more confident to face every challenge in my work.(256字)

(五)大三出國建議

For those who love the hospitality industry, ICHM is definitely your best choice. Different from the course in Taiwan, courses designed in ICHM value on practical knowledge. We would gain the basic knowledge from lecture class, but we developed more during the practical session. For example, we learn wine recipe from book meanwhile we also have some practical bartending session in a practice bar. We learn the serving procedures from book meanwhile we put the knowledge into practice during the practicum classes and Adelaide Convention Center experience. Moreover, choosing ICHM allows us to do six-month industry placement and the best part is that school will help us to contact to a proper hotel to do our placement, which can make us gain a very special experience that develops our hospitality skills overseas. From my opinion, the students from Lanyang campus at ICHM are quite lot every year, so people are usually used to stay in our comfort zone and only chatting and playing with people who speak mandarin. I suggest that try to find something new and something interest and then you will get through another stage if you want to improve yourself. Don’t stay at the same place, reach out to some other things then you will be fully satisfied. In addition to this, from my experience, I will say that go traveling as much as you can and try to explore many things or places or even food in Adelaide and even whole Australia. Adelaide is my first place when I arrived in Australia, then I went to Perth for nine days during the holiday week, after that I moved to Melbourne to finish my industry placement. It is very fortune that I can experience these places deeply. This study abroad journey is very rich and rewarding for me. If you are abroad, just go to see more places!(312字)
