2019大三出國輔導通報系統 - 留學心得報告[編輯]

(一)基本資料

I was studying in SUNY Cortland as my third year of studying abroad. It was located in New York State but far away from New York City. In Cortland City, I won't say it is fun or attractive as other big cities but it still has its own charm. The university is big enough for me because I'm the person who get lost easily. The lessons are good, most of them aren't too hard. Every professor I met include the president is really cool and friendly. I registered for plenty courses like Spanish, Cross Country Skiing, Sociology, Anthropology, Blues Guitar, Piano, WGS, Human Communication and three Academic English. I was hoping to finish my whole year but unfortunately I was forced to come back during the second semester due to the COVID-19. (132字)

In the city which is almost snowing every day, I would say that nothing can compare to Cross Country Skiing. Professor Sean was really young but skillful, he taught us how to do the basic and how to control our gravities. The most important one is how to fall safely. Although the whole semester will only have 5 classes but I think it is worthy to try. Besides if you don’t have time for other classes but you still need the credits to pass the criteria of 12 credits one semester, I will strongly recommend this class. Our classes, disturbed by the snowstorm, were only four left for last semester so it was pity that we couldn’t have the full experience of skiing. But it was really a great experience and great opportunity for us to try something new. By the way, you don’t need to worry about only learning the basic or just walking on the flat ground, I can guarantee you can do more than that because we had skied from the top hill to the ground for a lot of times. I still remember once that there is a small hill that was curved and plenty people fell down because that was our first time learning how to turn, I was dared to try so I kept the tips in mind and do the scurry during the turn and it worked. I was so proud and happy that I raised my arms and screamed. Yes indeed, everyone needs to fall when they are trying the new stuff but after a couple more times of trying the great achievement will bring you the great happiness. Another one was a big hill that was really long and beveled. I was the last one in line and I decided to enjoy the speed instead of the protection. I skied down with my arms wide opened, feeling the wind blowing on my face like the tornado passing by. It was fantastic! I couldn’t help myself that I hailed all the way down to the ground.(346字)

(三)生活環境

SUNY Cortland is located to the east which almost snow every single day after summer. A pair of water proof boots is necessary for a student to live there, but you can always find a good pairs with a good price in Destiny Mall which the international office will make sure to bring you there once. Somebody says that a car is necessary in United States but the students in SUNY Cortland don’t need to worry about that because the school shuttle runs every day even on the weekend. During the snowy day the road might be slippery so I would recommend to take the school bus more than having a car. You might consider it snows every day so it is definitely cold. Well, it’s true it is cold but it is also very dry so it is not too bad, I can still wear shorts during the snowy days and trust me it wasn’t that cold. The food there is a good concern. SUNY Cortland has two big dining hall, Bistro and Neubig. Both of them are good and provide jobs for the students. Every meal is about 11 dollars. The school provides several meal plans for you to choose. For those who want to save money I will suggest you to buy the ingredients to cook. Ten pieces of chicken thighs with bones will only cost you 5 dollars. For the jobs, it is the best part. The international office will take the international students to register the social security numbers to work legally. It is something that other American school can’t apply. (268字)

(四)自我成長

In the beginning I was afraid of talking to the local people because I didn’t have enough confidence. The first try I noticed I was really nervous that I tended to speak super-fast which apparently didn’t work well. There’re good chances the school had offered, the first one is the activities for the international students, second is having the American roommates and the last one is working. The international will arrange the activities only for the international students like going to Niagara Fall, you will have plenty chances to talk to other international students, plus, with the same circumstantial of none-English speaking, you can get along with them easily. Having the American roommates is a very good process of learning English and promoting the English ability. My roommates told me that in the beginning they couldn’t even understand a single word of mine, but after a couple weeks I got used to it and started to slow down my speaking instead of getting hurry. Then, the ability of speaking became better and better which talking on a cellphone with your local friends is no longer a problem. If you still have problems with that, the professors are all willing to help. The last one working is really a good chance to make friends and learn English. When you are serving others with a smiling on your face, it is really easy to win their impression. Cute, isn’t it? The Americans are so friendly and naive. After a couple more times, you will start to memorize their faces and the food they want then a great greeting will become a good start to make new friends. Besides Asian people are very easily for them to recognize. (290字)

(五)大三出國建議

Studying in this university is really a good choice. After I analyze this school, first of all, it is cheaper than others. Except for this, having a chance to work is really a great opportunity to make money and learn English. Eleven dollars per hour, and if you work for four hours you can have a free meal before or after your shift. I almost work every day and honestly it is better than spending time studying English in your own room. By this I didn’t ask money from my parents and I went to Universal Studio Resort and Disney World in Florida for a week. Living with Americans is unavoidable so don’t even thinking about living with your Taiwanese friends and speaking Chinese every day. It is not allowed. Be dare to talk, be dare to try. But still show some respects to others and don’t be too arrogant. Do not lock yourself up, try not to refuse everything because Americans love to try something new. I didn’t have the situation of racial problem but if it really happened please try to stay calm because there’s no benefits for you to do anything stupid. It is easy to identify who is unfriendly because they don’t have any disguises, they love to be themselves. Don’t go outside during the night and don’t drink alcohol under 21. Someone might think this school is boring and remote but don’t forget your purpose is to study. This school is a good place to study and save money. If you want to play you can get a job at the dining hall and wait until winter break, there is enough time for you to concern. Don’t take your parents’ money as granted especially you are going to use them for fun. Americans are independent, try to learn from them.(314字)

(六)其他

One of my roommate is a soldier. He told me his story when he was driving me to the airport which is really impressive. His name is Sean. His family wasn't so rich that had enough money for him to go to college. So his father worked really hard and tried to get the pension to pay for his tuition. But his company betrayed him and fired most of the old workers made them lose their pension. Sean's father told him that he still got some allowance which is enough to afford his college tuition. Sean was only 19, he turned down the money and told his father that he will join the military and let the government pays his tuition. Now he is 26 years old, he was my roommate. It was really a great pleasure to meet him. A real man who is so independent. It is him who made me started to decide to grow up. (157字)
