(一)基本資料

University: State University of New York at Cortland, which is also called SUNY Cortland. SUNY Cortland is the college located in Cortland, the Upstate of New York State. It usually takes about 4 to 5 hours’ drive from here to New York City. Time: Fall 2019 - Spring 2020 1st-semester classes: Human communication/ Theory Found: English as Second Language/Intro: Academic Language/Applied Linguistic/Academic grammar and vocabulary 2nd-semester classes: Painting I/ Beginning Blues Guitar/ English Grammar for TESOL/ Teaching Writing: Second Language in Classroom/ Teaching Reading: Second Language in Classroom (87字)

(二)課程學習

Most of the courses I choose are for improving my English ability, and the other classes I choose are all for the TESOL class, which is learning to teach English in the Second Language. It’s also a chance that I can learn more knowledge about English. At here, I’m going to introduce some of the classes that I’ll recommend for the study aboard students. And for the TESOL class, because most of the classes I choose are for juniors and seniors, which a little bit challenging, so I didn’t introduce a lot about them. In the first semester, I choose the Academic Language and Academic grammar and Vocabulary. Academic Language is teaching by Professor Angel, Academic grammar and Vocabulary is teaching by Professor Patricia. These two classes are small classes, and the professors are so nice, which I’ll recommend for the students to improve their English ability. Human Communication is teaching by Professor Moyi Jia, which I like the professor’s teaching style, and I also recommend it. The Applied Linguistic class and English Grammar for TESOL class are teaching by Professor Paulo. He is an interesting and friendly professor. These classes are learning about the grammar and linguistic for English learners and for the students who are going to be TESOL teachers in the future, which is challenging, but I do learn a lot of knowledge from this class. Painting 1 and Beginning Blues Guitar are all my favorite class. I recommend choosing these classes for those who want to learn something new. Painting 1 is teaching by Professor Clark teaching about oil painting. This is my first time to learn to draw by oil painting, it’s really fun and interesting! The Blues Guitar is teaching by Professor Richard, he is a cool and friendly professor. Professor may have some guitar that is available for students, however, students may need to prepare their own guitar. So I’ll recommend for the students who really want to learn in this class, they can buy a travel guitar which is small, light and easy carrying. For me, I like all of the classes when I studied here. I think I’m lucky that all the professors I met are friendly and nice. I learn a lot from them, and I really appreciate that I can learn with these great professors.(393字)

(三)生活環境

SUNY Cortland has a beautiful campus with different building for each department, and the residence halls for students living. West Campus Apartment is the place that most of the international students live in. Each building has 4 apartments; each apartment has 4 rooms. Students who live here can have their own bedroom and a shared living room, kitchen, and a half bathroom, which I think it’s suitable for students who want to make friends with different students, but also have their own space for living. For the traffic, students who live in West Campus need to take the school bus to campus because there is some distance from here to campus. Also, the school bus will run on the campus bus stop at a specific time, which is convenient for students to have classes in a different building or go to the Student Life Center and dining hall. Every Wednesday and weekend, we’ll have the shuttle bus for students to go shopping at Walmart for some groceries and basic needs for daily life. It’s also convenient for students who live in West Campus to take a 5 minutes’ walk from here to Walmart. For me, I personally like the weather in Cortland. The main reason is its weather dryer than Taiwan, which won’t make me feel humid. Also, I like cold weather. The winter here is long, and it usually snows a lot in Cortland. The lowest temperature in this year was -30 Celsius. The snow usually starts in November or the end of October. Until March and April, the spring will truly come. However, we still have snow in May this year, most of my friends were all surprised about that!(283字)

(四)自我成長

Personally, I don’t have a lot of difficulties when I was living here. But I think the biggest change for me is being more independent and outgoing. I’m a shy person, and I don’t have a lot of confidence in myself. When the first time I came here, I got nervous and anxious easily. I think the things that change me is I started to ask questions and express my own ideas no matter it’s in class or making friends. This action also makes me have the courage to talk and making friends with more people, and I feel more comfortable and relax with being myself. Next is I worked in the Dining hall in the Student Life Center. The working experience for me is to learn to interact with co-workers and serve for the students. I really enjoy my working place, my co-workers are all nice and friendly. They make me feel warm here. Last is the experience of facing the situation of COVID-19. During the spring break, most of the students were all back to their hometown and home country. I’m one of the students who choose to stay here instead of going back. Because of the situation, our school is closed and change to online courses, and I am staying in my dorm for the rest of the semester. In the beginning, I was totally at a loss, but I choose to stay here. I called my family and professor in Taiwan, and make the promise said that I can take responsibility for taking care of myself. This event brings me a huge change for myself and my thoughts to become an independent person.(282字)

(五)大三出國建議

For the juniors who prepare to study aboard, I would like to give them some suggestions. First of all, being friendly and polite, which I think it's important when we're in a foreign country. For example, people here usually say “Have a good day” or” Have a good one” with a smile, which I think it's really friendly and a good manner. For me, I believe that “A smile and a greeting can make a person's day”. Being polite and friendly is a manner, it's also important to take responsibility for everything we did. Next, being outgoing and take the initiative to meet new friends. If there's anything that you don't understand, don't be nervous. It's OK to ask people questions. People in here are enthusiastic and friendly. There's no one will laugh at you if you have something that you don't know, and we can learn from the experiences. Asking, learning, and trying are so important that to open up our minds to experience everything new. Being proactive will help you to make friends easily, be bold to experience, and learn from everything new. At last, I hope that for all of the students who study aboard can seize and enjoy every moment, every day of the study aboard experiences! For me, I would say that this experience is unique and beautiful. Every friend I met, everything I learned is the most precious memories in my life, I really love here. And I hope each one of you can have the same feeling as me. (256字)
