I have one tutorial and one practical class every week in one of my courses, ‘Food and Beverage Operations’, which provides us the knowledge in hospitality and food and beverage. In the practical class, we can also get some experience by working in a training restaurant. I have never got working experience in hospitality or a restaurant before I came to WAI, so everything I learned is new to me. I found some difficulties in my first week that English is not my mother tongue but need to learn the proper noun in English with the fast pace of speaking. In the first practical class, our teacher taught us the three plates method, sequence of service, and table settings, etc. We also learned to make some cocktails, and in the beginning weeks, we did some practices that half of the students were waiters and others are eaters. I was a waiter who serves food for my classmate; however, I was still not good at remembering the sequence, so I was a little bit nervous. Although we couldn’t enjoy the whole meal like those eaters, I thought it’s my chance to get more experience and would have more confidence if serving real customers. We started to have real customers since the third week, every student would have different rotations. Sometimes we had to be the manager, which meant that we had to organize everything should do in the training restaurant, including assigned duties to each classmate, check the reservation, and arrange customers for proper seats. Different tasks in different weeks, and sometimes it might be quite challenging. Everyone had a great improvement during these twelve weeks, and we had fun in this practical class as well. We always learn new things every week, and we’ve been more familiar with the duties, which are helpful for us to find a job in the future. I realized the importance of teamwork, that every position had its responsibilities to make the restaurant operate smoothly. I was happy because I improved a lot which made me more confident and I also received someone’s compliments. In the end, I want to appreciate my teachers in this course, Kylie and Kristin, who taught us a lot of knowledge in hospitality.(377字)

(三)生活環境

The campus of William Angliss Institute locates in Melbourne CBD, but the school doesn't provide any dormitory, so every student needs to find a place to live in. Three of my friends and I rented a flat in the city, and there were two bedrooms, one toilet, one living room with a kitchen, and a balcony. I found renting information on Facebook, there're many clubs and some people will post the information about renting. However, it's not the easiest way to look for a place to live if you are going to live with friends, because everyone has different requests, like their budgets may not be that high, or some people prefer not to share a toilet, for example. Melbourne has been called the most livable city in the world, and I think it's true. In the city, there's the free tram zone, which means the cost of taking trams in a certain area is free. There're also lots of shopping centers and restaurants or cafes in the city, so you can buy almost everything you want and taste many kinds of food in the world if you are rich enough. Melbourne is also famous for its coffee culture, the taste of the coffee is excellent, so I drank a cup of coffee almost every day. And the weather might be quite dramatic in Winter or Summer, extremely cold or hot, but the weather is nice in Spring and Fall. What I like the most is it seldom rains, but mostly the sky is blue, and stars are easy to see at night. So I think you will also fall in love with Melbourne if you are coming.(278字)

(四)自我成長

I have already been to the UK before, so adapting to the English environment did not confuse me a lot. In fact, they are quite similar between the UK and Australia. However, there are so many people come from different nations, especially Chinese people, we can hear someone speaking Mandarin on the street easily, which made me felt like I was not in an English-speaking country. Being able to study abroad has always been a dream since I was a child. The teaching methods are different between foreign countries and Taiwan. In Taiwan, professors usually organize the key points before they teach. Therefore, students can learn the main contents of the course by focusing on the lectures. However, not all students are hard-working, those who don’t focus on classes can't understand, and professors cannot take care of all the students. However, in foreign countries, independent thinking is a must-have ability for students. Professors tend to let students learn the content by themselves. Therefore, it’s important for students to review after class or go to find many academic resources. In the classroom, I found that Australians tend to ask more questions than Taiwanese do, like me, I am quite shy in class. During the class, group discussions or presentations can make everyone think and prepare their own thoughts. After the study abroad program, I realized that independent learning and critical thinking are also very helpful for the future after we graduate. Learning is for self-responsibility, and what attitude you learn, that is, what kind of results might become. (259字)

(五)大三出國建議

Only the students who are from the International Tourism and Management department are able to apply to this school, William Angliss Institute, especially for those who want to finish their internship abroad. Students from the TKU will be studying in the campus which locates in Melbourne city in the first semester, and then it'll be the work placement in the next semester, and the place of working can be anywhere within Australia. The best reason for choosing WAI is that the tuition fee is much lower than other schools, and the basic salaries are quite high in Australia, which means if a student finished the 400 hours of works, the total amount of the spending during the whole year may be lower than the budget. It's a good choice for those who don't want to spend too much money on studying abroad. However, the biggest inconvenience is that students have to find jobs on their own, which is quite difficult for those who have few working experiences. It's a big challenge for many students, so this can be put into consideration of whether come to WAI or not. In the first semester, there are some courses for us to select, depends on one's interests. The content may be difficult and there will be many assessments for each subject, but I think I've learned many new things or knowledge because the way of doing an assessment is quite different from the one in Taiwan that we're familiar with. The English writing will improve a lot after hanging all the assessments. If you love the feeling of living in a prosperous city or want to have a more challenging experience during the junior study abroad year, then I'll recommend you choose WAI. But if you need help from the school, then maybe you are not suitable to come to WAI.(307字)
