2019大三出國輔導通報系統 - 留學心得報告[編輯]

(一)基本資料

My studying aboard progress is finished few months ago. During the period, I choose ICHM(International College of Hotel Management) as my campus. I studied Hotel Management and relative subjects. It's more focused on internship than theory. I was supposed to complete my study aboard from 2019 July to 2020 June. However, the virus outbreak had impacted our plan. I had no choice to finish early. Anyway, it's still a remarkable memory for me.(72字)

(二)課程學習

In ICHM, most of the subjects are more focused on students' self-construct and training. To deal with the 6-months industry placement. Here's one of my favorite subject called Food and Beverage. In the class, we are in the server's role which able to serve the customers. At the beginning classes, our lecture, Moon will teach us about the basic ideas as a server or a bartender. We learned about table manners, for example, the correct cutlery to used in different dishes and the types of drinks should fit in different containers. Also, we've got the WSET level one license, which shows you've equipped with basic wine knowledge. These courses surprised me because it's different from my previous learning in Taiwan. You can even learn how to make coffee, these experienced can helps you a lot even though you're not in this industry in the future. A good class should have a good teacher, too. I would like to introduce my lecture, Moon. He's a Korean teacher with a warm smile on his face. His sense of humor brings much joy in the class and make the atmosphere relaxed. He wouldn't blame students for mistakes because he knows we're here to made mistakes. As long as we improved and correct ourselves. Near the end of the semester, we will be serving in the training restaurant, Tiros which located next to our campus. For the two weeks, we will be facing the real guests and show everything we've learned in the previous classes. Besides that, the cooperation between servers and the kitchen is also important. The training courses helps a lot when I started my industry placement. At least you've got a basic idea of how the pattern works. To be honest, I think ICHM offers good courses in the hotel industry, I recommend if you're interested in the industry, it would be a good opportunity for you.(316字)

(三)生活環境

The ICHM campus is located in Adelaide, the biggest city in South Australia. The campus isn't located in the city hall, it took about 30 minutes bus to get to the city. The nearby area of the ICHM campus is residential. All the international students are required to live in the dormitory next to the campus. It's 4 people sharing area. Includes a private and a bathroom sharing with the other students. It's a comfortable place to sharing time with your housemates. The only disadvantage is no kitchen in the room. And all the cooking equipment is not allowed in the dorm, which means you can only eat in the student restaurant. That's a bit inconvenient, especially for the students who want to save money by cooking themselves. The dormitory area has some entertainment such as pool, table tennis, basketball, or tennis court. It's a good way of spending some time with friends playing sports. One of the common questions I'll be asked is about the food that the restaurant offers. There is an Asian chef in the kitchen who can cook some Asian food for students. In my opinion, it's ok with that. The weather in Adelaide is much better than in Taiwan. Taiwan is always humid and uncomfortable. This situation would never happen in Adelaide. I think the good weather may be one of the reasons for the Aussie style. To sum up, the living environment in ICHM is pretty good, it may take you some time to adjust, but I think you would be used to it soon.(259字)

(四)自我成長

During the study, the most frustrating thing would be a language problem. Although the students who came here are all equipped with a level of English ability, you still can't use it as fluent as your mother language. When it comes to the academic problem which you need to express your thought. It's quite challenging. We've got students who came from various countries. And there are Aussie students, too. Once you study together, it's obvious to see the difference between international students like us and the locals like them. The gap is quite big. One of the examples is the culinary class. Because the class is teaching cooking skills and knowledge in the kitchen. Most of the item words are not familiar with your daily life. It's a challenge to keep up with the teacher's order. I would say it's a natural phenomenon, that's exactly why we are here. To deal with this challenge, just keep your mind clear and do your best, as time goes, you'll eventually get to the level. Visiting Australia lets me saw many cultural shocks, especially on living style and the city construct. One of the scariest one is the kangaroo. I used to think kangaroos are a precious species like koalas, but during our road trip in Australia, I saw kangaroo bodies lying at the side of the roads. It seems normal to them. Plenty of kangaroos died by the car accident. I was so shocked when I saw a dead body just lying next to our vehicle. I think this would be one of the scariest culture shocks I've ever seen.(268字)

(五)大三出國建議

As my personal experience, if you're tired of studying lectures or regular university, ICHM can be one of your choices. One of the reasons is the flexible classes organized. You are able to manage your free time because there are only four subjects. Which means you can explore the city or do whatever you want. The other reason is the industry placement in the next six months. You can visit different cities for half a year. In my opinion, it's great for me to have a chance to experience different cities and various lifestyles. The Australian is friendly, as far as I know, there are no racial discrimination cases happened in my surrounding. The Aussie style is more chilled and relaxed, if you're the type of person who looking forward to many parties, alcohol, or nightlife, maybe America would be your better choice. Australia is more suitable for people who like traveling, enjoying a natural scene, or chilling out at the sandy beach. The other suggestion would be about the industry placement. During the placement, you'll get paid by the official hotels. Which means you can make money for yourself and learn to manage your income. This is one of the self-challenging things I guess. Start to experience the economic independence. Paying your bonds, life costs or entertainments. You can learn a lot during the process.(226字)
