(一)基本資料

My junior study abroad starts from 10th September 2019 to 17th March 2020 and the school is Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Among the courses I chose, I like Housekeeping Operation the most. Before learning this course, I thought housekeeping is all about cleaning, not a big deal;however, after a few lessons, what I learn from the class let me completely change my understanding of housekeeping. It is the most important and largest department in the hotel. This cognitive gap made me gradually interested in this course. Furthermore, this course not only taught us academic knowledge but also allows us to have some site visits that can develop and extend what we learn in the class, then we may put it into practice when we start our internship. During this course, we visit several hotels’ rooms and housekeeping departments, such as Burj Al Arab, Atlantis Hotel, Renaissance Downtown Hotel, and even Jumeirah Central Laundry. By visited different hotel, we can understand the business model of housekeeping operates in every hotel and deepen our impression of the knowledge taught in the class. As for the professor, although all the professors who taught me are nice and responsible, I like Christiane best. Christiane taught us beginners French, but she is also the professor of beginners Arabic. Though we are all beginners, she insists to use French to teach even in the first lesson. She mixed French with gestures and a little English, trying to give us the best environment to learn French. In her class, we will never get boring. In addition to taught us textbook contents, she always uses some interesting ways to give us addition materials l, such as playing games, singing French songs, and make small French videos. Even at the final exam, she wants us to group in pairs and use what we learn in class to chat with our partners. Christiane let us feel learning a language is no longer to be a painful thing, but it can be a pleasure. Combining the above reasons, I will recommend Housekeeping Operation and Beginners French to the students who would like to come to the Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management for their junior study abroad school.(346字)

(三)生活環境

About the Emirates Academy and the living there, I will introduce it in the following six parts. The first one is school facilities and nearby environment. In the Emirates Academy, we have a student service center, basketball court, tennis court, 24-hour gym, swimming pool, mini market, lounge, library, pool bar, café, and a restaurant. As for the nearby environment, there are restaurants, mall, supermarket; even water park and Burj Al Arab are also nearby the school. All of them are within walking distance. Dubai was listed top 10 of the safest cities in the world and the school provides 24-hour security. Therefore, no needs to worry too much about the safety issue. The second is food. There are two malls with restaurants, food courts, and supermarket nearby the school, also there is a kitchen in each dormitory which equip with complete kitchen utensils, oven, refrigerator, and cooker hood. Therefore, it is convenient whether to cook on our own or eat outside. Moreover, food delivery in Dubai is also another convenient and common option when we don’t want to go out for food. If you miss Taiwanese food, there is Din Tai Fung at the nearby mall or you can buy Chinese foods and ingredients in Wenzhou supermarket. The third is the clothing. The weather in Dubai is sunny and hot, but the temperature can drop dramatically at night. Also, the strong air conditioning indoor. Therefore, mainly summer clothing and a few coats will be enough. The forth is accommodation. Emirates Academy provides students with an on-campus dormitory; each bedroom is limited to single occupancy, with a fully equipped kitchen, equipped with a direct dial telephone and a broadband connection learning area, and a bathroom with a separate shower room. Furthermore, there is a laundry room with washing machines and dryers on each floor. The fifth is transportation. In Dubai, there are several transportations that we can take. If a group of people went out together and the destination is far away, a taxi may be the best way to go. Some apps are easy to take the taxi; we can even choose the size of the taxi. If not, taking MRT or buses is also a good choice. However, under the premise of having an international driver's license and knowledge of local road conditions, self-driving is also an option. Sixth is entertainment. As we know, Dubai is a tourist city. There are tourist spots, shopping malls, and amusement parks all around Dubai. If you like world-class buildings, they have Al Rostamani Maze Tower, Burj Khalifa, Dubai Frame, etc. If you like shopping, they have Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, and various shopping malls. If you like extreme sports, they have skydiving, zip line, desert safari, and so on. With so many ways of entertainment, you will never get bored in Dubai.(472字)

Curriculum: Among the courses I chose, I think leadership is the most difficult course. Although in general, this course is the easiest course to deal with. However, when due to the midterm exam and final exam, it is a nightmare to me. The format of the midterm exam and final exam are essay questions based on material covered in the classes. This seems to be nothing for others, but it is very difficult for me. I am extremely bad at writing essays, not to mention theoretical essays. From this, we can know that my midterm results are very tragic. After talking to the professor about how to study the exam and introspect, I realize the problem. I always learn by rote, try hard to remember all the contents, but this made me forgets faster. Because of this, there is not much to write, and the word count is insufficient. Therefore, I change my way of learning when preparing the final exam. I attempt to get familiar with and understand the important theories and proper nouns in the textbook, and then I will try to explain them in my own words. If I can explain smoothly, it means I already know. If no, it means I need to work harder to understand it. After a period of hard work, when I’m writing the final exam paper, I found out it is easier and my thoughts are clearer than the midterm exam. This time I wrote a whole test paper with all the explanations and examples of the questions. Heaven helps those who help themselves; my final exam results have improved a lot compared to the midterm exam. Internship: At the beginning of this year, I started my internship in the desert resort in Abu Dhabi. At first, it was called Jumeirah Al Wathba Desert Resort and Spa, belonging to the Jumeirah Group, but somehow after nearly two months of my internship, the hotel was resold to the Marriott Group, and the name has changed to Al Wathba, a Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa. I am an intern in the front office department. Front office department is divided into receptionist, concierge, telephone operator, bell team, and guest relation, and because of the serious shortage of staff in the front office department, I must learn the duty of receptionist, concierge, and guest relation at the same time. In the beginning, although I was often scolded by the guests because of unfamiliarity and poor oral expression, I felt stressed and even cried, but I didn’t give up because of this. With the encouragement of my classmates and colleagues, I learned step by step. If I didn't understand something, I will ask my colleagues or supervisors. With such hard work, I slowly discovered my changes. For example, I first started to learn how to be an operator. Although the operator's job seems easy, I have to have a certain understanding of the various departments of the hotel to know how to handle the requirements of the guests. In an unfamiliar situation, I was often complained or even scolded by customers because of panic and mistakes, making me reject to answer the phone for a while. When my colleague realized my situation, she shared her own experience and comforted me, and I tried to bounce back. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. With my perseverance and hard-working, I gradually stopped stuttering when answering the phone. Almost all of the guest's requests can be handled with ease, and I started to like to work as an operator. And another huge challenge happens when the hotel was taken over by Marriott Group. The resort was affiliated with the Jumeirah Group on 29th February, but it directly became the Marriott Group on 1st March, leaving us no time to adapt. Regardless of the transfer of management crew, the internal system and room planning have undergone tremendous changes, and these changes have caused a variety of unexpected problems that made us been through a very hard time during that period. I can still remember that because of the need to change to a new system, the entire hotel was blacked out, and only the computer and telephone at the reception were available, but the room card and passport scanning machine were unavailable, resulting in a very long time to check-in and check-out. Besides, although we have informed the guests of the power outage in advance, the actual time of power outage is much longer than the time notified, and the room card is unavailable, which also makes the guests constantly complain that we can only comfort the guests and do our best to deal with the various problems caused by these changes. Although it is very busy and chaotic at the moment, we have come through it at last. This has made me grow a lot during the internship; after all, we can thrive even more in adversity. It is also an unforgettable experience once in my life. (831字)

(五)大三出國建議

For those who are still hesitating to choose which school to study abroad, my suggestion is to participate in all the briefing sessions of the school you are interested in, also learn more about the various aspects of those schools, such as courses, life, etc. After understanding all the school carefully, you can compare it, and then choose the one which fits you the most. For the one who already chose the school and waiting for study abroad, my suggestion is to try to find the senior who has been to the same school before and ask all the questions you have. Also, make sure the conditions or qualifications for credits in advance. Get everything prepared and just wait for the time comes. After going abroad, don’t forget to take a look around while studying. Different customs, cultures, knowledge, and experience are also worth learning. As for the one who chose the Emirates Academy, my suggestion is to read the course description carefully when choosing the courses; ask when you have any questions about the course. Some courses had lots of work to do, but if you try to work hard, it is easy to get good grades. On the contrary, some courses seem to relax and easy, but if you indulge yourself, you will fail in those courses. Furthermore, compared to our university, the atmosphere of the class in the Emirates Academy is different. Professors in the Emirates Academy have no tolerance for skipping classes, so don't ever skip any classes unless you have a proper reason. Also, try to prepare for the internship interview as early as possible, because it will begin shortly after a new semester has started. Last, no matter what difficulties you encounter during study abroad, as long as you are persistent and hardworking, you will overcome it after all.(306字)

After two months of studying at Emirates Academy, the school holds a graduation ceremony for graduates at Jumeirah Emirates Tower on the 7th of November 2019. We are fortunate to be able to participate in this important event. The location of the ceremony has shocked me already, but only I realized how grand and luxurious this event was after I got there, exclusive photography area, buffet breakfast and lunch, huge ceremony venue, band performance, and graduation gala dinner. Also, what amazes me is that the atmosphere at the scene was very joyful compared to the atmosphere of sadness and farewell at the graduation ceremony in Taiwan. They don't seem to regard graduation as a parting, but a new beginning. Everyone was singing, dancing, or taking photos happily. I was also infected by that atmosphere, and I couldn't believe that this is a graduation ceremony. Therefore, there is a special experience for me.(151字)
