(二)課程學習

Of all the classes in the school, I like the grammar class the most. My teacher is a female teacher from Iran. Her name is Effie, and she immigrate to the USA years ago. So, she has great proficiency over English and can teaches students well. Although my grammar is my weakness, I still like the grammar class in school. Effie won’t make me afraid of learning it or being uncomfortable to learn it. She is indeed a great teacher. Furthermore, she let me know what I need to enhance, and she gave us tests for knowing our progress better. She also kindly explained the answers in details one by one to everyone. The way teachers teach classes in the USA is different from what schools in Taiwan do. They have this principle that having students in a great environment is so much better than just pushing student to learn unwillingly. It really help me to understand how much I absorb and how good I am after learning a lot of material in her classes. Effie is the benefactor I met in Temple University. She teaches me not only English but also what life is like. She really care about students, including my schoolmate and I. She brought me a lot of warmth, and she is just like my family. She will take care of your feeling daily and help to solve your difficulties encountered in the USA. I feel not lonely because of her, and I’ve been missing her since I got back to Taiwan. I deeply appreciate her. I thank her for teaching me grammar that I don’t know. I highly recommend everyone whose grammar is not good to go there and learn English. This class is the happiest class I had in the USA, I really enjoy it and appreciate that in my life. (310字)

(三)生活環境

Temple University is a very large school. It has its own hospital, ball courts, and its own police department. The police department is responsible for taking care of all the students in university. It is in Philadelphia. There are famous tourism spots in Philadelphia. For example, Liberty Bell and Independence Hall are famous places to visit. Another schoolmate and I rent apartment outside of the school. The rent is cheaper than school dorms, and it cost only 725USD. However, it is far from school. So, I need to go to supermarket with my roommate before going home so it is safer. There are supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, and mobile shops. Also, there are subway to go to downtown and Chinatown. Overall, the apartment is in a convenient place to go to everywhere. When I first arrive there, it is the summer time and the temperature is about the same as Taiwan. However, it is really dry in Philadelphia so you will not sweat to much because sweat are evaporated. The winter in Philadelphia is freezing cold, and it snows a lot. You will need skin care products for moisturizing due to the above mentioned situations. As for the safety, there are lots of African Americans in Philadelphia. So, my roommate and I usually do not go home too later and afraid of meeting dangers. Besides, the policies in Temple universities protect students a lot and make their parents feeling comfortable. I really appreciate the school gave us this opportunity to experience the life aboard and I have learned to be more independent. (261字)

(四)自我成長

This is my first time to go to a place this far to study. I don’t feel like fit into the environment in the very beginning, including the food and the culture. For instance, they like to drink cold water, and I don’t like it. So, my roommate and I bought thermos in the supermarket. We will boil water before going to school and cook our own food. I learned to cook lots of food and it is an opportunity to grow myself. When we just arrived about a month, my roommate and I received a scam phone call. They pretended to be policies of China and told me that our bank card has some issues. They also told us that someone opened a fake companies using our name. They need us to wire out money for investigation. We followed their instructions and felt we are stupid after it. After figuring out that it’s a scam, we went to the police station and make a record. Moreover, we opened new accounts in bank and replaced our passports. It is the most scary thing I met in the USA. It had been a month to solve everything but we didn’t get the money back. After this event, we became more cautious about picking up phone and learned this precious experience. In the end, there is a outbreak of COVID-19 in China so many students bought the ticket home. It is a blessing in disguise that everyone is safe eventually. Although the time is short, but I really learned a lot, become more independent, and make progress in my English learning. (273字)

(五)大三出國建議

Before going abroad, you should prepare all kinds of documents. The documents will include a new passport that will not expire before you coming back to Taiwan. Also, you need to look up for all the information, including where to buy food and clothes, how to commute, and where to live. You can ask people who visited the place you are going to go, look up online using Google, and ask friends in the school that they had such experiences before. After detailed investigation, you will know the places better regarding safety and convenience. Otherwise, you will easily get lost in chaotic places or might doing something stupid due to culture difference Before arriving, you will need to contact the landlord before arriving so you will have places to stay. The communication should include rent of housing, rules of places, and maybe what are special things to care about. After arriving, you still need to keep yourself highly cautious. After all, it is a place you don’t know too much about. You need to observe things in details before action so you can keep yourself safe and sound. Don’t forget to keep close contact with corresponding teacher in the USA and in Tamkang University. Also, you need to keep your family informed about your life. It is a really good experience to go out and see different part of the world. I hope the journey of all the people going abroad can be smooth, and I wish they learn a lifetime experience to carry forward in their life. In conclusion, be excited about what is coming but always keep yourself safe! Also, love where you choose and solve any problems that you may encounter. After the exchange program, we will learn, grow, and bring different kinds of experiences that enriching our own life and make Taiwan better. (309字)
