(一)基本資料

I went to Japan for learning Japanese and marketing at Oita Beppu. Beppu is a city with a lot of elders, it’s a calm but hot in the summer, while cold and dry in winter. Beppu is like America but filled with resident houses. You have to take the bus for thirty minutes to reach Beppu station, the center of the town. In Beppu, they have two types of public transportation, KAMENOE bus or OITA-KOTSU which stand for Oita transportation. Usually, you have to buy a bus card or bus pass to go around this city. There’s an OITA-KOTSU main station near AP House 3, so I went there and bought a bus pass. The staff there speak little English, so if you don’t speak at least a tiny bit, bring a friend. In Beppu and near APU, there’s a lot of ONSEN which means hot-water-baths lying all around. There’re multiple spots and you can choose whatever you like. Just take the KAMENOE bus towards Kanawa, you will see plenty. (174字)

(二)課程學習

One of the lectures of my favorite is surely Japanese. My teacher is Koyama Itsumi Sensei. She is very kind and helpful towards the students. Her passion helped a lot of us students to have the continue forces against studying Japanese in the session. The choice of textbooks is "tobira", in English it means door. It's the original creation of APU and comes with the second and third book if you wanted to learn more. The class itself is not very slow paced but medium and a bit fast paced. Although the classes were split in three parts, and the teachers are all different from each other, but I have the chance to take two of them, one by one in the period of semesters. We all started as the baby of the Japanese land. We have to learn the hiragana and katakana first. As the baby’s step goes, we started to learn basic words like hobbies and sports, also music instruments. Then the numbers, the baby can easily count one to ten now. Next is places and names, like hotel and post office for the places, Tanaka and Yamada for names that used frequently. So, the kid is learning to talk now, almost being at elementary school first grade. In the fourth chapter, or as the book uses: “topics”, textbooks starting to ask us about writing some paragraphs to know the word choices and sentence building of the student. Starting to write a paragraph is not easy, so the textbook also came with some examples. With the examples and a topic to write to, the kid can do basic sakubun now! Having all the new acquired skills, the kid can proudly say it has mastered basic Japanese. Now the only thing to do is to broaden my “word library", then I can graduate from the “Japanese elementary school”. (310字)

(三)生活環境

APU lies in Oita Beppu, which is a calm town without surprises. Most of the town residents are friendly and kind. My dormitory lies near furuichi which means “old town”, and it actually is one. It’s not really near everything, it’s just resident houses around. Although I said, “without surprises”, but there still some. It’s close to the coastline, we had a beach nearby. In summer, there will be people partying at the beach. Also, there’s a lot of crabs creeping around the road. Usually, they got crushed by cars or trains, and the body lies everywhere, you can smell the stink of the crab juices every time you go outside. Because it’s residential area, there are lots of little shrines by the road. It’s usually local gods or Buddhism gods. One of them got the biggest shrine, and me and my friends call it “The Fish Master”. Usually there’s offerings for it, sometimes toys form kids. My friend sometimes goes to it for better fishing luck. The only supermarket near us is Marushoku, which is a large supermarket with a hundred-yen store within. Usually, it opens at 9 am and starting to do the pre-cooked foods. The hundred-yen shop is useful for the students and the neighborhood around. It has the essential goods for a travel abroad student, like hanging rack, washing bag, and pens. They also got some strange ones, like bath bomb, festival decorations, even clothes for probably few kinds of scenario. In the food and miscellaneous goods area, they will have different variety of bento which means lunch boxes at sell, different kinds of bento at different days. In January, it will sell bento with spring rolls, and in summer it will start to sell unagi (eel) bento. They have a fish fridge which sells a variety of fishes because we are close to the ocean. Also they have a bread area that had bread and cakes. Although I think the toast is fine, but my friend insists it’s a cake. Overall, furuichi is an okay place to live if you don’t get bothered by the one-kilometer-walk to the supermarket marushoku. (363字)

(四)自我成長

In Japan the life is not that easy or hard, it’s kind of moderate. But for culture shock experiences, I can name a few. First, you don’t have to wave for the bus to make it stop for you, just stand and wait, the bus will always stop for you. Second, we had a website that monitor the movement of the bus, that tells when it’s coming and how much its delayed or earlier. In Taiwan we only got the notifier that shows what time the bus is coming. Third, the alcohol drinks in this country are extremely cheaper than the country of my friends. It’s always selling over ten times the price of Japan. Finally, the taxis in Japan have automated doors, the driver will open it from their place without you touching it. It’s also good for hygiene in the COVID times. The life here at AP House three is not that hard, at least we had the supermarket marushoku here. And even easier at AP House four, they chose the place near town center. So, they got nearly everything they needed, like food, shelter, shopping, even entertainment. The only downside for them is the bus ride to APU is long and takes a lot of time, at least one hour. But for the people living in AP House one, two, or five, they have massive con of having no immediate food source. Although they have the upside of being close at school, they only have the student cafeteria and the coop which is the student union shop. The coop sells basically everything, but the scale is very small of one room. It’s just marushoku but shrink in size. So, I imagine living at campus with AP House one, two, and five will be living in suffer.(305字)

(五)大三出國建議

I recommend APU for people who liked Japanese anime, manga, and cultures. The life in APU is not that harsh, the life in Beppu is also quite well. Just beware of the hard lectures and courses, it will be just fine. Because Japanese people use katakana, it’s basically the Japanese adapt of some foreign languages. Usually, you can answer in English, just use the Japanese accent. In marushoku and other supermarkets, they always ask if you want rejifukuro which is plastic bags. They will also ask for o-hashi which are chopsticks if you are buying pre-cooked food and bento for taking back. If you take a fifty(50) bus to start the journey, let me showcase some interesting stops. Near kamegawa-shinkawa, there’s a bento shop that called HOTTO MOTTO, it’s really a bargain choice. The shop has a member system, which can get you a few yens-off by buying more and saving points. You can download the app from Appstore or Google play to join as a member. As I remember, it’s five yen for one point, and one point can discount for one yen. In shohayan, HOTTO MOTTO got a variety of bentos, like curry, seafood, or fried chicken. The recommend for me is the Fried chicken variety box, with got the best chicken wings of the Beppu. I give the shop seven out of ten points. Deeper downtown in harukigawa, we got coco ichibanya which is a curry focused shop. Most of the curry choice are all best in Japan. The fried food of this shop is also very good. The recommend for me is the fried chicken and tomato sauce curry. It’s the best curry I have ever eaten. If you want to take bus only to the shop, you can take the fifty bus which stops at dansanfuto-iriguchi that is just behind the shop and is the closest bus stop to coco ichibanya. I give the shop nine out of ten points for the best curry. Around Beppu post office they have DAISO the hundred-yen shop. And GIGO for entertainment and claw games. One stop further they have McDonald. Around McDonald they have Gyomu-supa which is a very cheap supermarket, and also sells miscellaneous goods, like fresh meat, vegetable, and bread. It’s a good place to go if you want to stock up the food. If you go even further, near kitahama, you can see some big supermarkets like DONKI, YUME town, and TOKIWA. Over there is the true town center, they have various restaurants and malls lying aside the road. Then you reached the destination: Beppu station. At Beppu station, they also have different kinds of food. And YAMADA-DENKI, an electronic shop that sells all kinds of computers, camara, and gaming equipment. Beppu is a large town but never reached city, because the people here are living slowly. It’s the comfort that brings us together in the warm town of Beppu. Beppu is a good place, but it’s just a bit inconvenient. (504字)

(六)其他

In Japan, there’s a lot of places to go, and a lot of views to be had. One time, we went to umitamago which is an aquarium that lies near Beppu. It was Sunday and there’s a lot of people and kids. The aquarium was fine, and the fish comes with detailed description. The only problem over there is “the kids are too noisy.” In one of the corridors, they have a piano lying around, it’s a small piano with black back. And it’s a day of weekend, so of course the kids were having fun with it. It’s very noisy in the corridor and they got more fish than normal over there, so it’s a suffer when we trying to check all the fishes. The same day, we went to the monkey park named takasaki-yama which is a mountain side park that have a lot of monkeys and only monkeys roaming around the park. The park is not that huge as a zoo, but very large as a monkey house. They have few of the staff doing explanation to the crowd and some are caring for the monkeys. Some of the monkeys will run to the path for human, so we had to be careful to them. They have a big board for the monkey and group count. The board is located above the walking area and below the monkey living area.(239字)
