(一)基本資料

I went to The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management in Dubai. From 2023 September 2024 July. It’s a study abroad program for 3 months study and 6 months internship. For the first 3 months we can choose whatever course we want plus the mandatory courses. I had Personal Development, F&B Business, and Arabic for Beginners.(52字)

I like F&B Business the most. The course was seperated into two parts, theory and pratical. We spend around 6 hours a week in this course. As F&B contants so many aspects, we had three professors for different sections. One for theory, one for culinary, and one for restaurant service. We learned mixology, the sequence of service, how to appropriate bahave yourself when being a server, how to cook, the rules in the kitchen, how it is like working in the kitchen, and of course the theory of F&B. I personaly prefer theory than pratical. Professor Helen was in charge of the theory part. She is a strict professor but I like her very much, for her passion in this industry and she’s dedicated to delivering the knowledge for us. It’s indeed a pretty stressful course, we were expected to preview and review the course material before and after the class. The teaching style is different in Dubai and in Taiwan. In Taiwan the students only require to listen to the professor conduct the lecture. However, in Dubai professors ask questions, giving us the chance to think, talk, and reflect. Sometimes she will give us in-class activities. We have to team up and discuss or search informations online and then share in class. She also use slides to conduct lecture but the key points she will test us in the exam is not in the slides. So we have to pay full attention in class and take notes. She will even review the contants from the last class for us. I felt so much pressure if we couldn’t answer her questions. Overall, she is a very strict and good professor. At first I struggled a bit in her class but I worked very hard and after some times I get used to her teaching style. Eventually I have got a good grades.(317字)

Dubai is an extremely hot place with only two seasons throughout the year. From November to February is winter, while March to October is summer. Although summer is scorching, air conditioning is available everywhere, even in bus stations. Despite Dubai’s reputation as a hot, desert-like place with little water, some areas near the coast experience some humidity, especially at night when the outdoor air feels even more moist. EAHM is located in an affluent area of Dubai, very close to the iconic Burj Al Arab hotel. There are supermarkets, small malls, and a variety of restaurants and cafes within a 10-minute walk from the school. Nearby, there are also water parks, indoor markets, and many entertainment options, making the area highly convenient for daily life. The campus features a swimming pool, gym, lounge, two coffee shops, and a student cafeteria. The student dormitories are private suites, each equipped with a bathroom, kitchen, dining table, and study desk. The cafeteria offers a self-service buffet for breakfast and lunch on weekdays. The campus has two entrances: a main gate and a dormitory entrance, which is manned by security 24/7, ensuring a safe environment. Overall, the quality of life here is excellent. Dubai is an Islamic country where all food is halal, and pork is only available in specific areas. Alcohol consumption is strictly regulated, with legal drinking age set at 21. You can only purchase alcohol from authorized stores with proper identification. Despite being an Islamic nation, Dubai is very international, with locals comprising only 10% of the population. As a result, dress codes are not as strict as in other Middle Eastern countries. There are no specific requirements to cover legs, waist, or shoulders unless visiting mosques or more formal places. Dubai is known for its top-ranked safety worldwide, with strict laws prohibiting gambling, pornography, and drugs. Surveillance cameras are widespread, making it a very secure place. Photography and videography are highly regulated, especially when it comes to capturing images of people, particularly women wearing black robes.(334字)

Dubai has a large number of Indian residents, so one of the most difficult things to adapt to when I first arrived was the Indian accent. I often encountered Indians while shopping or taking taxis, and at first, it was really hard to understand what they were saying. Their accents were unfamiliar to me, and I initially assumed it was because my English wasn't good enough. I would sometimes feel frustrated, questioning my language skills, but I soon realized it was simply a matter of not being used to their accent. Over time, I became more accustomed to it, and understanding them became much easier. It was a valuable lesson in patience and cultural adjustment, as I learned to embrace the diversity of accents in the city. In addition to adjusting to the environment in Dubai, I also had to adapt to the differences in teaching and exam methods at EAHM compared to my previous university, Tamkang University. At Tamkang, group assignments and reports played a significant role, and exams weren't as central. In contrast, at EAHM, group work was almost nonexistent, and the focus shifted heavily to midterm and final exams. The difficulty of the exams at EAHM was much higher than what I had experienced at Tamkang. During my first three months, I felt immense pressure, trying to adjust to this new academic environment while still aiming for good grades. To manage this pressure, I spent extra time studying in the library, reviewing notes diligently, and preparing for the challenging exams. Although the exams were more difficult, I realized that with consistent effort, it was possible to achieve good results.(272字)

Being independent is crucial when living abroad. No matter what happens, you can only rely on yourself. You are in a foreign environment where things may not always go as planned, and you need to be prepared to face challenges head-on. This means you have to be cautious in everything you do and stay alert to your surroundings. When going out, always pay attention to the people and the situation around you. If something feels off, trust your instincts and leave immediately. Your safety and well-being should always come first. Making new friends abroad is certainly a great way to expand your network and experience new cultures, but it’s important to be discerning about who you choose to associate with. Not everyone you meet will have good intentions, so if you sense any malice or discomfort from someone, be cautious and avoid getting too close. Take the time to observe their behavior first before forming a closer bond. Don’t feel pressured to fit in by doing things that make you uncomfortable or that you don’t enjoy just to gain acceptance. When choosing a hotel or position for your internship, it’s helpful to seek advice from people who have experience or from your professors. Collect as much information as you can, then assess which option aligns best with your goals. During your internship, take the initiative to learn and grow by accepting extra tasks or responsibilities. The more you contribute, the more you will learn, which will ultimately help you develop valuable skills. Studying and interning abroad in your junior year is an incredibly enriching experience. I hope that juniors and sophomores make the most of this opportunity and create unforgettable memories.(285字)
