(一)基本資料

I chose The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management in Dubai as my study-abroad school for my junior year. I selected three courses, which are: food and Beverage, Professional and Personal Development, and Arabic language beginner.(35字)

My favorite class was the Arabic language course. This class was specifically designed for beginners in Arabic. I enjoyed it because the content was diverse and interesting. The teacher started by teaching us the basic Arabic alphabet and gradually introduced various vocabulary. In terms of speaking, she taught us many practical daily phrases, such as greetings and self-introductions, which we could flexibly apply in real-life situations. At the end of each class, we were paired up to write a short dialogue and practice it on stage. In addition to the language lessons, the teacher often incorporated cultural elements into the class. She shared fascinating insights into Middle Eastern traditions, customs, and religious practices, which were very different from those in Taiwan. For instance, we learned about the importance of Ramadan, the meaning behind certain gestures, and the etiquette of dining in Arab cultures. These discussions broadened my understanding of the region and made the course more engaging. One of the highlights of the course was our final class, where the teacher organized a visit to a Lebanese restaurant. This outing gave us the chance to use what we had learned in a real-world setting. We practiced ordering food, greeting the staff, and asking questions about the dishes—all in Arabic. It was both fun and rewarding, as it showed me how practical the language could be in daily life. The teacher was very kind and patient, always encouraging us to speak without fear of making mistakes. Even when we did make errors, she never blamed us. Her warm smiles and nods of approval always eased our nervousness during presentations. I loved the relaxed atmosphere of the class, where we could learn a new language in a stress-free environment. It was truly a unique and practical experience.(296字)

(三)生活環境

The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management (EAHM) is a very special school. Although it is not located in the city center, it is situated next to the Burj Al Arab, and within a 10-minute walk, we can reach various five-star hotels of the Jumeirah Group. Regarding accommodation, the academy provides us with a single room, which includes a private bathroom, refrigerator, and kitchen, allowing us to cook our own meals. EAHM also has excellent campus facilities, such as a gym, laundry room, swimming pool, and café, which make it feel like a resort. I often see students sunbathing and reading by the pool on weekends, which is very relaxing. The peaceful environment allows everyone to enjoy their free time in a way that feels more like a vacation than a school experience. As for Dubai's climate, being located in a tropical desert, the weather is very dry and hot. When we arrived in early September, the temperature often exceeded 40°C, so we could only go outside after noon. During the hottest part of the day, it was nearly impossible to be outside for long without feeling uncomfortable. However, the winter in Dubai is very comfortable, with temperatures around 18-20°C, which is quite pleasant and perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing. Finally, regarding food, Middle Eastern cuisine offers a variety of breads and chicken dishes. However, due to religious reasons, there are many Muslims, and most restaurants do not serve pork. The diet here is very different from what I am used to in Taiwan, so I had some difficulty adjusting to it. Although it took some time, I eventually began to enjoy the new flavors and dishes. The food here is full of spices and unique flavors that offer a completely different experience from what I’m familiar with in Taiwan.(302字)

As a Taiwanese student, I found that the biggest challenge in daily life was the food. Dubai is an international city with a wide variety of cuisines worldwide. However, there were relatively few Chinese food options, whether it was the cafeteria food at school or the meals at the hotel where I interned. The choices for Chinese dishes were limited, and the flavors were not very authentic. Although I tried cooking on my own, the ingredients were different, so the taste didn’t turn out the same either. As a result, I missed Taiwan’s various snacks and dishes a lot during my study abroad experience. Moreover, Dubai’s cuisine is influenced by Arabic culture, with bread often serving as the staple food, and various spices added to the dishes. This made it challenging for me to adapt to the flavors. Another significant difference was their culture. Islam is the predominant religion in Dubai, with a large Muslim population. This religion is not one we encounter often in Taiwan, so it felt quite novel to us. For instance, Muslims avoid eating pork, abstain from alcohol, and follow modest dress codes. One of their customs that left the deepest impression on me was Ramadan. In April, during the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset every day, abstaining even from drinking water. I remember that during my internship at the hotel, many of my colleagues were fasting. Because they couldn’t eat, their physical energy was visibly limited, but they still worked diligently. This deeply surprised and impressed me. Although foreigners are not required to participate in the fasting, I tried my best to avoid eating in front of them as a sign of respect and courtesy.(288字)

(五)大三出國建議

Based on my experiences during my third year of studying abroad, I would like to share some suggestions for those planning to pursue their studies overseas. The first is to stay open-minded. The experience of studying abroad is unique, so it’s important to seize the opportunity and try different things with a positive mindset. You can adapt to cultural differences, bravely make new friends, and embrace new experiences, such as trying new foods, activities, and ways of living. These experiences can help you develop a broader understanding of the world. The second is developing independence. Studying abroad is a challenge, but also a wonderful opportunity for personal growth. It involves gaining the ability to make decisions, solve problems, and manage your own life without relying heavily on others. This is important because, after studying abroad, you'll encounter various situations where, often without family or friends nearby to help, you'll have to solve problems on your own. For example, during my time in Dubai when I was sick, I had to handle everything from seeing a doctor and picking up medication to requesting sick leave by myself. Although there were many moments of fear and helplessness, I grew a lot from the experience and felt stronger both mentally and physically. Therefore, learning to be independent can help you adapt better while studying abroad and also build your confidence. Last but not least, seek internship and career development opportunities. Internships during your study abroad experience can be beneficial for your career. Many schools offer internship opportunities, like EAHM, or you can seek work related to your field of study on your own. These experiences will not only enhance your skills but also provide valuable experience.(284字)

(六)其他

During my study in Dubai, my friends and I made the most of our free time by exploring the city's diverse corners and iconic landmarks. From the vastness of the desert to the tallest building in the world Burj Khalifa, the serene mosques, the historic old town, and the thrilling theme park, we ventured through it all. We also had the chance to experience a variety of cuisines. These experiences were truly rare, ones I could never have had in Taiwan. I enjoyed the balance of studying while traveling. It brought an energy and rich color to my life, making it all the more fulfilling. (105字)
