2023大三出國輔導通報系統 - 留學心得報告[編輯]

(一)基本資料

I studied abroad during my junior year at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), located in Indiana City in Pennsylvania, US, from August 20, 2023, to May 24, 2024. During the year, I had several classes, like Food Safety, Intro to Hospitality, Intro to Communication, Korean, Asia Study, Food Service Operation, Wine & wine Service, Special Event Management, and Hotel Operation Management. (二)課程學習

Wine & wine service, which was my favorite class in the whole year, this class was taught by Jeffrey Santicola, who taught clearly and is a nice professor, he let us try several types of wine, like Rose, red wine, white wine, and so on. However, because this class has to drink wine, you have to be 21 years old before you have this class, cause it is illegal if you drink under 21. In this class, you will learn lots of wine knowledge, like how to make it, which type of grape has what taste, and where wine has the best taste. The professor not only taught the knowledge in the classroom but also brought us to a winery near our school, to let us understand more about the industry of winery. For the grade, in the final, he asked us to form a group presentation and to build up a menu that included food and wine, for the personal report, he asked us to do a packet to introduce about 9 wines that we chose. I really like this class not only because I like to drink, the class involves hands-on experiences like wine tasting, pairing exercises, and sensory analysis, making learning engaging and memorable. Wine has a rich cultural and historical background. Learning about its origins, production processes, and regional differences can be fascinating. You’re exposed to wines from around the world (France, Italy, California, etc.), broadening your understanding of different cultures and their wine traditions. Learning to identify aromas, flavors, and textures helps refine your senses and appreciation of fine wines, which can be incredibly rewarding. Beyond academics, wine knowledge is useful for personal life—whether entertaining friends, dining out, or understanding the complexities of wine culture. That is why wine and wine service is my favorite class. (299字)

(三)生活環境

On the day( 8/21) I arrived at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, it was a fall and in a comfortable temperature, which was around 24-28 Celsius, I remember I wore a T-shirt and pants, it was nice weather. I lived in the dormitory at the school, this dorm is near every class building, and I had a roommate who also came from the same department in TKU, we lived in a semi-share room, which had two separate bedrooms, and there were desk, a chair, a single bed, a closet and two cabinets in each room; outside the bedrooms, there were a small kitchen, a shower room, a sink, and a round table with two chairs, it is quite comfortable for us to live. By the way, the school has several dormitories and different types of rooms, so it is a lot of choice to live in. In the school, we had several choices to have meals, dining hall, which provided several types of food all you can eat, we just needed to swipe our student card and enter to have our food; hub, which had 4 stores, like Chik-fil-A, Burger and Fries, and so on; Bento Sushi, which provided American-Japanese food, like udon, sushi, and some rice meal, I like this store the most. In the same building, there is a Starbucks, we could swipe meals or pay the money with the card. Besides, if you feel hungry, there is called Folger, which sells chicken tenders, burgers, and some fries. (247字)

(四)自我成長

In the beginning, when I just arrived in the United States, my oral skills were not good at all, and I always misunderstood what Americans said, which made me feel a little bit upset about it, however, after I got used to the style they speaking, and I also could understand what they said and express my idea clearly. For example, they usually say “Have a good day !” at the end of the talk, no matter which type of conversation, at the first time we heard this, we didn’t know how to respond, after we asked an American friend, we finally know how to respond to that. Another culture shock for us is the “small talk”, they are used to having a small with strangers, like where are you from, where are you going, what type of food you like the most, something like that. The first time I encountered this situation, I felt confused and weird to talk about myself to a stranger or more. This was the first time to faced culture shock, it was really interesting, and it gave me more courage to talk with strangers. The difficulty of having classes with Americans, I think the most difficult thing was understanding every sentence professors said because they usually said slang and some jokes that only Americans know, so I felt a little bit confused at first time. However, after I got used to their class style, I could understand 80% of each class, which made me feel more comfortable joining the class. (255字)

(五)大三出國建議

If you want to come to Indiana University of Pennsylvania, you should bring something you like to eat, like instant noodles, hotpot sauce, hotpot broth, chili sauce, and so on. You will feel novel eating American food, but after a few days, you will really miss Taiwanese food, like rice, hotpot, and instant noodles. When you come to America, you have to travel to several states in the US, because you don’t know when will you stay in a foreign country for such a long time. During traveling, you will learn more details about American culture and food. During traveling, you have to record every moment, so that after going back to Taiwan you can watch these pictures and videos to remind these memories. When you in school, you have to try to meet as many people as you can, they also will bring you several interesting memories. Besides, if you meet a friend who has a car, you may have a chance to let him/her drive around the school. If you have time, you could stay in the park behind the library, there are chairs you could enjoy the sunshine, I think that will be the best moment in the school. The last thing I want to say is that cherish every moment you stay here, you will meet lots of new people and new things that may change you in the future, so don’t just stay in the dormitory, try every thing you want as much as you can.(254字)

(六)其他

I met many friends in IUP, they are also the best friends in my life, although they are living different countries now, I think we will meet in the future. For the other memory, I traveled several place in the US, like New York, Washington D.C, Orlando, Miami, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angles, San Francisco, these place contain several interesting memories with my friends and the people there, I will cherish them forever.
