one of my favorite courses i took was the sales in travel business class. Not only was the professor, mr. karsai, really kind and laidback, he often took the class on field trips to see some of budapest’s best attractions (for free!) like the danube river cruise and the dohany synagogue because he knew a lot of us were international students who had just arrived in the country. He’d also take us to meet some local tourism business owners like travel agencies to learn first-hand about the trade. The in-class course material itself was informative and gave us insight into how travel businesses work. Aside from that, another course i enjoyed was the food and drink knowledge class i took the next semester. Unlike the f&b course that i previously took at tamkang university, which focused on the management side of the f&b industry, this course invited us to sample various types of food and beverages commonly found in the hospitality industry such as alcoholic beverages, coffee, and tea while learning about its origin and importance in the tourism field. I always looked forward to coming to this class because it felt more like taking a break where i could try out different kinds of food or drinks every week. What stood out to me the most from this course was that we were also taught how to discern the flavors and scents of food and describe them professionally, akin to professional food tasters. It was fun sharing our opinions of each item we tasted with the class, only to hear how eloquently the professor could describe her thoughts afterward. Nearing the end of the semester, the course moved to the science lab where we did small experiments to learn about food safety and hygiene issues in the f&b industry. I never thought i’d get to wear white lab coats and tinker with lab equipment in the tourism faculty, but i enjoyed it immensely. (330字)

The tourism faculty buildings are located at the heart of budapest city, near the famous parliament building. The faculty has two separate buildings not far from each other, each only three stories high, and unfortunately doesn’t offer a lot of facilities outside of classrooms, some common working spaces, and a student information office. Surrounding the campus, however, are plenty of cafes, restaurants, and a public library at the parliament building which became my favorite place to study. The school offers a dormitory which was already full at the time i applied, so i stayed at a student apartment called belvarosi which was just a 15-minute walk away from the campus. Although my room was tiny, the apartment building was fairly new and modern, complete with a kitchen and laundry room on every floor, a small gym, a few common areas, and 24-hour security. Additionally, the apartment was just around the corner from the metro, tram, and bus station, and is surrounded by supermarkets, restaurants, and other shops. I loved how central its location was, only a block away from budapest’s central shopping area, but tucked inside a small street so that the surrounding area was still calm and peaceful. Budapest is always crowded with tourists from all over the world, making it a lively place. A safe, walkable city paired with a variety of reliable and affordable public transportation made me fall in love with exploring the city day and night. Even walking home from the club at 4 in the morning didn’t scare me– there were plenty of others still roaming around at the same time. The locals were incredibly kind and friendly, it wasn’t hard to make friends at all. Not to mention that the city was a melting pot of different cultures, home to thousands of international students and expats from all over the world. (311字)

To be honest, since this wasn’t my first time studying abroad, i didn't experience a lot of difficulties or any culture shock. I had already experienced moving to taiwan from my home country to study abroad before, so i guess i was somewhat mentally prepared. I did feel homesick for the first couple of weeks, especially since i wasn’t really a fan of the local food, but that was easily fixed as there are tons of asian restaurants and supermarkets in budapest, and i cooked for myself almost everyday. Language wasn’t an issue either because as budapest receives plenty of international tourists, students, and workers every year, most locals speak english. One thing i found to be especially difficult was winter. I heard from my local friends that compared to other european countries, winters in budapest are warm so i didn’t have anything to worry about, but as someone who comes from a tropical country, they couldn’t be more wrong about how worried i should have been. Once the temperature dropped to 5 degrees and below, and the sun began to set early in the afternoon only to show up again after 7 in the morning, i grew somewhat depressed. The days got colder and shorter, and i began to regret the choices i made to study here– couldn’t i have picked somewhere warmer? Even i hated winters in taiwan. Thankfully, i managed to get through the worse of the season with the help of my friends. I visited the christmas markets, went ice skating, and best of all i got to see snow for the first time! When spring came and the flowers bloomed, the weather got warmer and i joined the locals going out on picnics at the park, lying on the grass. It was only then i realized how i fell in love with the city and already came to see it as my second home. (323字)

Try to learn as much as you can about the city youre going to– the language, environment, your living conditions, food, public transportation etc. so you won’t be too confused or surprised once you get there. It’s important to choose a good university that offers the faculty or major that you want to study, but remember to research the city itself to make sure you’d be able to adapt and settle in. you wouldn’t want to end up moving somewhere boring with nothing to do aside from going to class. Try not to bring too much luggage like i did because you will for sure want to shop while youre there. Prepare for the weather/ seasons! Bring your own medicine and personal amenities because they can be expensive depending on the country. Wherever you go, facebook is your best friend– look for international student groups, buy and sell groups, and free second-hand stuff groups. I managed to get a lot of useful house items and clothes from them. Dont be afraid to ask for help, living abroad on your own can get lonely and difficult so try to reach out to your friends, family, or find out if your campus has a counseling service. Enjoy the moment as much as you can, make friends and try new things, know that everyone gets a bit homesick at first but i hope you will come to love your city as much as i did mine! Whether you’re studying abroad for one or two semesters, trust me when i say that the time will fly by, so make lots of good memories that you can take home with you! (281字)

If you havent decided where to study abroad yet, i highly recommend europe. From my experience and what i heard from my classmates, most european universities offer various high quality courses, campus facilities, and great internship opportunities. Additionally, studying in europe comes with the chance to travel the continent. Not only does the schengen visa allow you to travel to neighboring countries, traveling in europe is also affordable and convenient. (70字)
